I have been using PT2 for years. Now I am planning to upgrade to PT3. My problem is that I install postgreSQL on my hard drive, and it is running out space. Can I un-install and re-install postgreSQL and keep the database? can I install postgreSQL on my hard drive and configure the Database to be local on a external hard drive? thanks.

PT3 will create an entirely new database for you - the PT2 database will need to be "converted" (although it's not actually converted so much as read and imported into the new PT3 database).

If you want to minimize the use of disk space, you could export your hand histories from PT2 then delete your PT2 databases (make a backup first, and store it somewhere just in case) and uninstall postgres.
Then let PT3 install it again for you, or install it yourself on a different drive.
There are links to a few options for doing this in the Database / Postgres FAQ.

thanks. Just paid for the pt3 upgrade and got the reg Code. So now I have my pt2 and postgresql installed on c drive which is runing out space. so what is the best way to upgrade to pt3, convert the pr2 postgresql db and have the postgresql DB on my 500GB usb drive? thanks.

Do you have manually entered PTv2 tournament summaries?

no. I only play 6max limit cash tables.

In that case, the easiest thing to do is to export your hands from PTv2 (Utilities --> Export Hand History to File ...) and then uninstall PostgreSQL 8.2.*

Install PostgreSQL 8.3 to the hard drive you want the PT3 data stored on. (Use the pginstaller for 8.3.7 from PostgreSQL's website.) Then install PT3 Build 5.1's Upgrade version (the full version includes PostgreSQL, which you won't need as you've already installed it). Connect it to your PostgreSQL 8.3 database, and use the Manual Import functions (Import From Directory is the one you'll likely want) to import all of your previously exported hand histories.

Once all of the hands are imported, you're all set.

* The reason for this is to avoid conflicts with having two running versions of PostgreSQL; if you know how to configure PostgreSQL to run on different ports via editing the postgres.conf file this isn't strictly necessary. We upgrade you to 8.3 for this install because it's quite a bit (15-20%) faster than 8.2 for our purposes.

thanks. so far all steps are fine except when I tried to export to file via pt2, it kept saying it was out of memory. my computer has 2GB ram, any other ways? thanks.

Check to make sure your hard drive isn't full; I think that message is when you've actually run out of hard drive space.
