I'm considering moving to Vegas for 3 months to play poker for a living, starting at 1/2 and making my way up.

I found airbnbs near the strip for about 2400$-2600$ for 3 months, so that's around 850$ for monthly rent.

How much would daily expenses cost me? (mainly grocery shopping) I don't plan on eating out, going for drinks, gonna keep expenses to a minimum.

850/mo for a temporary place is a good price

food costs the same in Las Vegas as everywhere else (except Alaska and Hawaii)

I'm not from the US, I'm only familiar with Europe cost of living. What's it like in America?

I am not totally sure where LV falls on that scale, but groceries in NYC or SF are roughly 30% more expensive than they are in a city like Jackson, Mississippi or Mobile, Alabama.

Not the most scientific method but I checked the weekly ad for Albertson's(PDF warning) in LV and the prices all look similar to prices in northern California.

Interesting. In east Idaho, Smiths is by far the most expensive grocery store in our region. We even have Fred Meyer which is also Kroger yet seems to be significantly cheaper.

Albertsons is still more than Super Walmart, Target or Winco but their fresh goods are far better so I shop there most of the time.

How much do you eat and what do you buy ?

Keep in mind you will earn comps from your play, up to $2/hr., which can be redeemed for buffets.

That said, $1-2 is a tough place to make an easy living, especially if you need to front $2400 for your AirBnb ....

(I would strongly suggest you NOT pay $2400 up front to some random poster who may not even own the premises. It would not be the first online fraud seeking to exploit poker players looking for housing in Las Vegas.)

Good luck.

Transport is likely to be a big cost. IDK about bus routes in Vegas, but where you will be working is not where you will be living or grocery shopping. And while walking is in theory as easy as one foot in front of the other, July and August are another matter entirely.

It seems too cheap to be real.. Being European too I looked for that and never found something decent near the strip at that price. Can you post a link?

Never had issues or heard of someone who was scammed on airbnb.
Anyway I pay upfront from the roll I have, and to break even monthly I need to make 850$+expenses monthly, which according to my math is around 3bb/hour. (gonna play 8 hours a day, 6 days a week).

About transportation, I do plan on walking. I won't be in Vegas on July/August, so it won't be too hot. I live in Israel, I'm used to warm weather.

There was just an article on the fact that airbnb hosts can cancel any time w/o any repercussions. Not that it happens often. I'll try to find it. I use VRBO and sometime Airbnb all the time, but never in LV. I've never had a problem, but I know people who have.

Please make sure you've checked the map on where you plan to live and how far it is from the strip. It could be an extremely long walk -- at LV is hot many months. You might be used to it, but it's miserable -- not much shade, either. I would definitely check public transportation.

Good luck.

Also, I assume you have a plan for what happens if you lose your bank roll -- or most of it? It's a great dream and could be fun, but winning consistently in Vegas is not easy -- and any player can have serious downswings -- we're talking several buy-ins.

Everyone coming from abroad to stay the full 90 days under the visa waiver program has a plan by default. You have to prove that accommodation for your full stay is paid for and that you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses. Without that, you’re getting denied at the port of entry.

Wow. Interesting. (Still doesn't account for losing your funds playing poker, but good to know I'm sure OP has it figured out. I've been following his strat threads.)

OP, I hope you start a new blog in LVL forum so we can follow your adventure.

Honestly, if you’re getting close to losing $10k playing 1/2 it’s probably best to call it a trip and return home or spend the rest of your time at the pool

[not sure if $10k is still in the right ballpark but that was always the suggestion a couple of years ago before I decided to get a green card]

!. Suit yourself, you've never heard of it happening.

2. Do whatever you want, it's your money.

3. I see.

Good luck
