Vegas and Reno

I'm reading a book (Inside Poker: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly by Vince Borgio) where the author says that Reno is actually his favorite place to play poker.

I'd love to hear the perspectives of those who have been to both - how do they compare, how do they contrast, what type of people would prefer one to the other etc.

There is no comparison... I think there actually might be a place in reno that spreads $.50/$1.

Hello fractional action.

The circuit event is cool, but thats about it

Peppermill Reno has 1-2 NL and 3-5 NL. It's a good room. But I don't think there's much else there.

Las Vegas minus the Las Vegas Strip is approximately Reno.

There are only a handful of poker rooms in Reno. Peppermill is the nicest one, imo, but the Silver Legacy (the room was moved from the Eldorado) is the only one in the downtown area. Not sure what would really make Reno stand out other than I guess there's a non-zero chance you could end up playing against Ken Shamrock?

It's like comparing Disneyland to a school carnival. He may enjoy playing in Reno, but it's more likely that he just hates playing in Vegas.

Re: Vegas and Reno

Way more poker options in LV, but there are a few rooms with low stakes NL and then a few 2/5+ at Peppermill.

That being said I think Reno is an up and coming area with some tech firms and Tesla setting up shop. Downtown Reno feels even more oldschool than Downtown LV.

Re: Vegas and Reno

Remember the Ellis island poker room... that's reno.

A few years back I was in reno with my mother and I sat down at a table at peppermill.
No game was going but as soon as I sat down to wait for players to show up, people started coming out of the wood work. After about 15 minutes we had a full table going of fairly bad overly aggressive play.

After an hour or so I had more than doubled up and stood up to visit the little boys room.
after I returned, the entire table had disappeared and only my stack was sitting there... funniest thing I had seen in a long time.

Re: Vegas and Reno

MSchu cool story, I would love to go to Reno to degen on $2 craps at the Cal Neva. Wish I could've gone when the Cal Neva had it's own book which was supposed to be one of the best and when the Fitz was open.

Re: Vegas and Reno

Going to Reno for the circuit event seems like a terrible idea... instead of the small town, laid back, minimal pro atmosphere, you will have to play with every backpack and headphone sweat pants'r in the country!

'Death and Taxes' speakeasy bar easily worth the trip up to Reno anytime for me nonetheless!

Re: Vegas and Reno

Reno is the west coast Atlantic City minus the boardwalk, except you trade a Heroin epidemic for a Meth one. The poker games are nothing like Vegas, unless you're used to the play of the low tier rooms like Excalibur or the closed Luxor Room.

More meth than heroin.

Reno is a nice place to live if you have money. Not so much if you don't. Comparing to to AC is lol bad - lots of golf, skiing and outdoors stuff with a minimum of grunged out ****hole districts. Even at the height of the poker boom it never really got going here, although the games could be OK during tournament events. Downtown isn't as dumpy as it used to be, and is nice for a dinner on the river at Campo or the River Grill if the weather is nice. The Peppermill, Atlantis and GSR are at least as nice as TI/Harrahs in LV, although from what I hear the club scene is nowhere near as "good" - I'm old so I don't care

It ain't Vegas. I wouldn't want to live in Vegas - but I enjoy it for what it is. But there's no reason to come to Reno to play poker.

Re: Vegas and Reno

From anywhere in NorCal where one would take I-80 to play poker in Reno, you drive right past Stones which would be quite -EV imo.

Don't play low limit craps at Cal Neva unless you have solid health insurance. Ugh, those chips.
