Question In Vegas on Nov 28 - what's with the hotel prices?

Hey all,

Can anyone enlighten me as to what's going on with the hotel prices the week of Nov 27? I'll be in town for a night on the 28th and am shopping for a hotel (have looked at Vdara, Bellagio and Aria so far) but the prices are insane compared to the previous week. For example the price for one night at Aria on the 28th is $550 but the previous Tuesday to that the price is a paltry $128.

Is there some big event or reason that the prices are like 3 or 4 x per night from the week previous that I'm not aware of?

Thanks for any insight.

Edit: just looked at the Mirage, price for Tuesday November 21 is $59/night, for Tuesday November 28 is $499/night, and that is coming from the smartervegas site. What gives?

it depends if they have conventions or events that day. use hotels.com or orbitz.com and shop around.

I doubt anybody is hosting a big convention right after Thanksgiving weekend?

The answer to the question "why is X hotel astronomically priced on random weekday" is convention like 90% of the time. Check other hotels- it's only the biggest conventions or events that will affect the whole city. Quick glance shows me the Caesars properties are normal-priced that night.

Yep. Bellagio is jammed last weekend of this month - we're usually comped, and they wanted 400+ a night. In at TI no problem.

Understood, thanks Eco74. I will look elsewhere. I was only looking at the Bellagio and Aria as I asked for recommendations for where a rec 2/5 player could sit in at a game not chocked full of regs and that was the answer I got.

If need be I guess I can stay at another hotel and travel to either of those rooms.

I'm not looking at the weekend though, the price skyrockets for the entire week. What does MM MD mean?

There is a convention and the hockey team has some home games after being away for the whole month.

There's a lot of ugh in these sentences. 2/5 is pretty popular, there are a lot of places that spread it. The Strip rooms are close together, if you don't like one room you can just walk over to the next room. But of course that's what a lot of people do - if one room develops a good reputation, people flock there until it evens out. A lot of the advice you get from the Internet about which room is better is just noise (like people hit one or two lucky draws and end up with double the winrate at X casino over Y casino).

So of course you can walk from a nearby hotel. Unless you've got some personal issues like refusing to pee in public bathrooms so you need to head up to your room every 2 hours, there's no huge reason to stay where you play. Even if Bellagio and Aria weren't super expensive (and just normal expensive), it would be worth considering staying at a cheaper place.

Things change if you're playing higher. Only a few rooms might spread the games you're looking for, plus, the chances of not being able to fold your winnings in half and stuff it in your pockets without making a second conspicuous bulge is a lot higher.

Highly depends on the time he wants to start playing on that Tuesday. I checked Bravo on Tuesday August 8th in the early afternoon (had a flight out of LV in the evening) and there were a total of 2 tables of 2/5 on the Strip. One at Bellagio, one at Wynn. In the evening, you can add Aria, but even Venetian or Caesars might be hit & miss on a Tuesday.

Re: In Vegas on Nov 28 - what's with the hotel prices?

I ended up booking a room at the Monte Carlo - it was the closest yet reasonably priced hotel to the Bellagio/Aria and fortunately it's connected to them both by the monorail so that's a plus. It cost $61 CDN a night plus resort fee obviously.

I would have gladly paid the nominal prices to stay at either the A or the B but $500 / night is way too much, I can't justify that, especially because by the time I factor in the CDN to US exchange rate everything (including my poker buy in) is 30 to 35% more expensive for me.

In regards to being recommended to play at either Aria or Bellagio, I actually sent that question to Andrew Neeme regarding what room he thought would be good for just a casual player to play at while visiting and he was kind enough to promptly reply with the advice.

He also prefaced it with the fact that Tuesdays are in fact the slowest night for poker cash games in Vegas and to not have super high hopes of finding a solid game, so we'll see. I'm not sure what to expect.

My wife will be with me for the day and I have carved out some time in the evening to rack up a few (5-6?) hours at the tables.

We will be arriving earlier in the day, perhaps 11 AM, probably grab a quick lunch, I have plans to take her on one of those guided hikes in Red Rock Canyon, come back and grab a dinner and shower, then I might hit the tables while she goes shopping or watches a show. I kinda wanted to hit up that skyfall lounge Neeme always showcases in his vlog for a couple of drinks but not sure if I get into a decent game that I will want to cut it short to do that cause it is likely once I start drinking I won't limit it to one or two and that usually means poker isn't the best idea after 4 or 5 cocktails lol.

Would you guys have any recommendations on the ideal time slot to be at the tables on a Tuesday evening or night?

Is this actually something to be concerned with in Vegas? I've never felt unsafe with varying portions of my roll on my person in any casinos I've ever visited, although I get the reality that **** happens.

It depends what's considered unusual. The more unusual the opportunity, the greater risk thieves will take. A big $2,000 night isn't going to make anyone take notice, $20,000 might, and $200,000 definitely will.

But for a 2/5 player, chances are you're not walking out with $20k.

Ha ha ha I have never heard of or seen a 2/5 player with a stack bigger than $8K, let alone $20K. I don't think I'd ever have the chance to amass more than $5000, I'd probably rack up and call it a night.

Anyways, thanks Callipygian for all your insight and help.

Just so you know, the Aria poker room is adjacent to the Monte Carlo; you walk down an indoor walkway and the poker room is there, as you enter through the doors.

Also the monorail located at the same intersection of Monte Carlo and Aria; just go upstairs. The monorail will then take you to the Bellagio but of course, as the planners will have it, its a mild walk to the poker room upon arrival.

Thanks Carlo, appreciate the info as I have never been to these hotels before. Cheers.

I hope you knew before booking that Monte Carlo is undergoing major remodeling while you stay there?

No, I wasn't aware. How bad is it going to be to sleep? That's all I really care about. It's a whirlwind trip.

Don't worry, they'll pass out free roofies so you don't wake up.

Having read this thread, I suggest your merely posting where and when you want to play might draw a full table. They might even agree to denominate the game in CDN, so you have more chips.

Las Vegans are a friendly, social lot, eh ?
