does the math actually work out that renting a car is worth it to drive for lyft?

It adds up to more than 0 which is a step in the right direction.

I did 6ish gour shifts when I drove before. Id probably have to do 9ish and shoot for 150 per day.

[QUOTE=johnny_on_the_spot;55750358]Massive is relative. What is massive for me is less than a rounding error to Bill Gates. For Chip it was massive...

Agreed. Good luck to OP Chip on whatever comes next. Thanks for sharing your experience.

People weren't joking about being a runner.

Sadly Chip's health would make that rather difficult so it's a good thing that wasn't communicated early enough to be actionable.

For the people I know who did it, it did add up to less than zero once they realized that they were also responsible for the insurance, maintenance and depreciation on their car.

That's why I want to use the rental car program.

When I did it before I had a relatively new car and maintenance wasn't an issue. I was driving 1k miles per month but I refused to do it more than a month or 6 weeks at a time. Then take at least 2 weeks off.

People who do this 15 hours a day in Vegas are just insane to me. I couldn't do that.

It seems to me chip is saying in an ideal world he leases a car from uber. He then works 4 weeks to a maximum of 6 weeks. He then takes a minimum of 2 weeks off. Once he feels recharged he repeats the cycle.

Apparently he thinks 233 miles a week, while earning by doing so, is more than should be expected of him, perhaps not knowing many folks drive that for a commute, without compensation, every day, to work a job for which they get paid.

Easiest solution to this is just put them on ignore whenever they do it. Literally could not be easier.

But Chip, you have to understand that when you post here or on other places about this massive ****ing life hole you’re in, but simultaneously post that you’re not prepared to work particularly hard to get yourself out of it, that you’re gonna attract negative commentary.

It’s Gzesh our resident LVL troll, instigator, under employed and bored litigator. Suprised the mods haven’t banned him.

If you’re going to go the rental route putting in a ton of hours on the monthly lease/rental and than taking a week or two off between rentals probably isn’t a bad idea.

80K I’d recommend reading the blog that Nolan Dalla did on renting and driving for Uber for a month. I think there’s some decent tips and at very least a good read.

I still think there has to better options to make money.

I only made my first trip to Las Vegas 9 years ago - January of 2011. We stayed at the Imperial Palace. I played poker there exhausted and lost more thn 3/4 of the money I came with in the first six hours.

I had made annual or semi-annual trips every year until 2017 when I took a job dealing the WSOP. Mostly it was an excuse to play a lot of poker.

At the end of the summer I went back to Philadelphia to gather my stuff, pack up my car and drive cross country.

I arrived in Vegas on Oct. 3, 2017. All along I planned to deal 2-3 days a week and play 2-3 days a week. That never materialized.

I got off to a hot start and was cruising after 3 months when I hit a terrible downswing. I had started working with a coach and staker in December. It went great for 3 weeks and the next 3 months were hell. Trying to learn a new playing style was not easy. It was extremely hard. And I have an ego so that made it harder.

I was able to get a temp dealing job on the strip in April and worked 30 hours a week through the summer. I played and played well. I managed to build up a decent little roll by early October. I think the high point was $3,300. It was a life/poker roll so not nearly enough but I never expected to be out of work long.

Again I went on a massive downswing. Throw in that I don't manage my money well - I don't waste but I didn't watch what I spent and probably ate better than I deserved - and I was broke by Nov. 1 or so. I spent the next couple of months before landing another temp dealer job in February. It waa about the time I got my tax refund which I used to play for about two months before bills and another small downswing ended that.

I worked part time and played sporadically during the summer. I left one job for another and it didn't work out. I grinded for about six weeks before a bad weekend busted me.

I should mention at this point tbat most of the poker in 2019 was played buying in for 60 BBS. I never approached it like so many others in town - those who hit and run 3 or 4 casinos in a night.

It's now January 17, 2020 and I'm leaving town.

I have a plane ticket back home in the morning. I have no idea where I'm going to live. I have no job. I have like $20 in my pocket and I'm starving.

I've been at the airport since about 2 pm Thursday. Its almost 3 am and I'm exhausted.

I don't regret moving out here. I took a shot and failed. The city will eat you up if You let it. I didn't drink or party or go to shows every week. In a way I missed out on some of the perks of living in such a great city.

But moving out alone - even though I have made some lifelong friends - in my mid 50s was dumb.

If you are thinking about making the move don't let this dissuade you. Had I been smarter and not had some other issues it might have worked.

I paid $600 a month to live where I did. With people I was acquainted with. I could have found a room for $350-400 that would have suited my needs just fine.

Anyway I'll be on a plane in about 7 hours.

I failed but I lived my dream and took my shot. Now it's time to get the truck from Knish and get back to the real world.

Thanks for this post
I moved to Vegas 4 months ago for a different reason.
My ex wife lives in Vegas and we co-parent an 11 year old
I work from home and make about 175k, but pay my ex $43k
I've played a lot of poker but unfortunately didn't track my winnings until the last 3 weeks
I have to say that I've enjoyed living in Vegas more than I thought
I golf, do out doors activities, dine well, and go to a few shows
I would like to get a poker coach to increase my win rate
I would encourage you to stay clear from poker for a while and work to earn and have a bankroll before/if you come back

New child support law that goes into effect February 1st may help you.

I've found gzesh to be the opposite of that, think he's usually spot on in observations.

Whether or not it's driving 1k a month or 1k a week is immaterial. Needing two weeks off after working 4-6 weeks is just not a realistic outlook on life in America. He's never going to get himself out of this situation like that.

He's made it clear though he's not willing to put in a ton of hours, specifically mentioned he didn't understand why anyone would do that.

In all seriousness Chip I'd look into teaching English abroad. Income will be low but you'll be able to park a good 1/3 to half your salary no problem to build a savings. You won't need any experience and you'll only be teaching 14-25 hours a week.

Your avatar also implies you like Asians and that's where the best teaching jobs are. I think that would agree with your lifestyle and provide an immediate security blanket.

Thanks for the heads up.

My divorce is in Minnesota and child support is a small amount of my payment since we have 50% custody each.

My spousal maintenance is the large portion.

The spousal maintenance is for 2 more years.

Sorry, I'm a family law attorney & couldn't help myself haha.

Technically you could transfer jurisdiction here & get child support done under Nevada law if it's better for you, but hopefully everything is cool & functional & you're better off not having to even think about it.

I'm coming up on my 9 year anniversary of driving across the country, meeting a bunch of 2+2ers, getting stuck in some blizzards, & moving to Vegas with limited funds & not knowing anyone.

Yeah, it's a surprisingly good place to raise kids. Met my wife 2 months after moving here & we have a 6 & 4 y/o.

Played for a living when I 1st moved here, but now hardly play. When I played a lot it was about half Aria & half a mix of a bunch of other places.
