Do you guys tip both the guy who parks your car and the guy who gets it for you? Or do you just tip the guy who gets it for you? I thought you're only supposed to tip the guy who gets it for you but I feel like I'd be dicking over the guy who parks it. On the other hand, I tip $2 so if I tip both I would have to split that into two $1 tips. A $2 tip seems fine. A $1 tip seems a little rude.

I always use $2 bills to tip valets and cocktail waitresses. For the valet, I usually tip one $2 bill at drop off, and then either one or two $2 bills at pickup depending on the service.

I guess I was looking at like now that MTTs take the dealer % out of the prize pool, there isn’t a need to tip those...maybe this is the same thing.

It's not. It's more like how delivery places charge a delivery fee. The driver doesn't see that money in most cases.

Fair. I’ve been tipping. But I used to tip $5 at pickup in Vegas and now $2

If you tip the guy on the way in you get a better space, enabling the guy that picks it up to retrieve it faster. Then you tip the second guy for the speed.

Thank you for that!

I'm in the minority here, I don't mind tipping on the way in and on the way out because they have one of my most expensive possessions and I like to keep them happy.

$5 on the way in and $5 on the way out. Seems like a lot, but I'm a level two degen at my local casino so valet parking is free and $10 is well worth it to avoid the elevator ride with the unwashed masses (no stairs to the parking garage).

Most of the valets know me and I honestly think they take better care of my car because of it and I get it faster when leaving than others. In fact, I'm sure of the latter because I've seen my number third or fourth on the board many times and my car shows up before others.

If $2 each way is standard then I'm sacrificing $6 to at least feel better about the situation. I'll live with that.

The first question that occured to me (maybe implicitly answered in the thread) is "are valet tips pooled?" If this is the case, it might not matter much how you do it. Of course, I've never driven in Vegas, so I have no experience with valet drivers.

I never valet my own car. I worked in insurance (subrogation) for 5 years and we were never able to get our insured's deductible back when the valet damaged the car. The valet is typically their own company and the only asset they have is the podium you drive up to.

I definitely believe that tipping on return of your car is sufficient. The exception however is when valet is "full" and turning away cars, but the guy let's you in anyway. (Discretely holding that $10 in view is a parking variant of tipping the front desk on check-in.)

Getting in a "full" valet also is one benefit of repeat business as a local, the valet guys know you. Tip both times then ....

if I'm going to be in for the night, $2 in $2 or $3 (if tips are pooled I would think they would be per shift, so If I think I'll be dealing with separate crews I tip twice)

One evening they will tip 5-0, as you drive off drink in hand.

nothing in, $2 bucks out. But hey, my car is always a rental.

$5 in and $5 out is insanity imo.

No.

To be honest, I don’t think it should be on the consumer to tip any profession and it’s all just a scam by businesses to compensate their employees less and increase the business bottom line....

But that’s a bigger issue.

In some countries, a service charge which goes to the employees is included in the cost of service.

(In Costa Rica for example, a food service bill contains a 10% service charge. I still add another 10% as a tip. It's not required, but it is appreciated and in some cases reciprocated in quality of service over time. )

That’s the case in the vast majority of Western countries not located in North America.

In tourist cities like Paris, Rome or Berlin, they have the “service charge included” only in local language fine print but not on the English menu to make sure tourists tip ~20% anyway while locals tip only 10% if any. I still haven’t figured out exactly how London works, but I know that restaurants expect 10% tip and pubs immediately know you’re a tourist if you leave more than your change.

I never valet unless it’s mandatory. In that case I leave $2 each way. I tip $5 if I need something from the car and the guy has to get the car just to park it again right after.
