Or, and I am really throwing caution to the wind by making this suggestion, he could get a job in Vegas before he moves to Vegas. I mean, this is an extreme thing that only people who dislike not ruining their careers would consider, so I certainly don't advocate it.

No need to be so cautious about this like most people are suggesting. Just quit your job, move out here and play poker.

Like backpacking through Europe? He can take pictures of the Bellagio, Venetian, and Paris to prove it.

It is something I have advocated, too.

This was before the idea of a sabbatical came up.

My bad, thought I read he was only working 20 hours/week in his job.

That said, it still works. The OP is in his 20's. It is unlikely he's doing anything that several of his other co-workers aren't doing already. He's not going to get replaced since it will take them a month to hire someone new (corporate world) and a couple of months to get them up to speed. Worst comes to work as long as he was doing a good job, he might have work in another department for a while when he comes back.

He is in his late twenties which is a little bit different than simply being in his twenties. Not sure how long he has been at his job, but if he is a couple of years from being vested, he has been there three years at least.

If he is thinking about taking a sabbatical, he needs to look at his employee handbook to see how such a long leave is handled. With my employer, if I take off more than ten consecutive business days, I am considered to be on leave of absence and they don't have to hold my position for me.

What people won't tell you about Vegas is, the job market absolutely sucks there unless you maybe have 10+ years of casino or tech experience and can transfer in as an employee. There's plenty of jobs in Vegas however, if you want to be an adult making $9-13/hr in the instance things go south.

I just thought of a pertinent question and maybe it has been asked, but I don't remember seeing it.

The question is, what's stopping you from moving?

There has to be something stopping you or you would already have done it.

Yes. You have been very earnest in this thread. Also, reasonable.

Hi all I just wanted to say thank you so much for the advice and comments.

I’m definitely nervous to ask my boss out of fear of getting fired

And I guess what is stopping me is the fear of the unknown or what will happen if I fail.

I know where I’m at in life right now is good. I can live comfortably and still play lots of poker.

I don't know if you are just not admitting this to us or if you aren't even admitting this to yourself, but your use of the word fail makes me think you want to move to Vegas and play a lot more poker and perhaps even try to make a living at it.

Sounds like you have a lot of soul searching to do.

Are sabbaticals common at your workplace? They are unheard of where I work now, and such a request would get an unpleasant response. I used to work at a place where everyone was granted a 3 month sabbatical after working there 5 years.

That is why I am suggesting OP look at his employee manual, if such a thing exists where he works, before he talks to any higher ups.

As I have said about my work, taking off for anything over ten consecutive working days means I would be on leave with no guarantee I would have a job when I got back.

I've heard rumors that there are websites and apps that have job listings on them. Similarly, there seems to be at least some indication that some people have successfully used "job applications" and "resumes" to obtain a job.

If that fails, he could try bribery and butt kissing.

Here is a rough idea for a plan.

Build up your paid time off so next year you can take the maximum amount of time for Vegas.

Rent a room in the area you see yourself living and/or working.

Drive everyday to and from where you think you might be working.

Drive to casinos on those days and times you would play if you actually lived there.

Do this in the hottest days of the year.

This will give you the closest you will get to Vegas living as you can get without an actual sabbatical.
