What's wrong with saving money and getting some exercise while you're at it? Not everyone comes to Vegas to spend money and be a degenerate. I always came to make money while keeping my expenses as low as possible.
I would never try it in the summer sun though.

Last summer I did a LOT less walking than I have done in the past, by using Uber for short casino hops around town.

It was that 3rd week in June last year, when the temps got up to 122 for a few days.

Normally I enjoy walking in Las Vegas, but with the extreme heat, Uber was a godsend.

Ended up making about 30 casino hopping trips in a week, for an average fare of about $6-$8 each..

This reduces to an exercise in math. How much time do you save by not walking? How do your savings by walking compare to how much money you can make in the time that you save? How much value do you assign to the joy of walking?

I am happy to take walks indoors but I usually despise being outdoors and I would probably walk about half as fast as someone like madlex, so walking from the airport to the Strip is not for me, but I can at least recognize that it might be worth it for at least a few other people instead of thinking that everyone should have the same priorities as me. Anyone who says that walking from the airport is stupid is wrong. Anyone who says that everyone (who is physically able) should try it at least once is wrong.

I say this as someone who on my first (under-21) trip to Vegas, walked from MGM to Stratosphere.

The price and customer experience ae essentially the same. Most drivers drive for both. But I've had many drivers tell me that Lyft treats them much better. One other minor advantage Lyft always had over Uber was that Lyft let you tip in the app, but I think Uber might let you do this now too. I don't boycott Uber, but I always try Lyft first.

There was a big thread last year or so about the best way to get to Rio. I was a big proponent of walking, which many people thought was crazy. But I have probably made that walk 100 times.

I've never seriously contemplated walking to or from the airport.

I actually did walk with my friend from the gun store to MGM in record breaking heat before and gave up 35 mins or so and called a cab from a local store.

There are two shuttle options for the Rio/WSOP:

Harrahs goes right to the Rio. Picks up from the parking garage where all the buses are.

The Orleans one goes to the Strip and comes back to the Gold Coast. (next door to Rio)

Easy walk from Gold Coast to Rio..but you end up in the poker room..NOT the WSOP Convention Center area.

Back in the day, that shuttle used to pick up in front of the Barbary Coast/Bills (where the Cromwell is now)

Not sure exactly WHERE on the Strip the Gold Coast/Orleans shuttle picks up from these days, but I'm sure someone itt will know..

Speaking of the Rio/WSOP and Uber..I learned last year when taking Uber to the WSOP do NOT type in "Rio Hotel and Casino"..you want to type in "Rio Convention Center" and specifically tell your driver you want to go to the Convention Center entrance.

Will save you a 10-15 minute walk from one end of the casino to the other..

Just FYI, I was exaggerating for effect - personally, I think the only naked boobs I've seen in Vegas are my wife's, although I may have been flashed once or twice, plus I've spent more time lounging at the pool reading than I have spent gambling.

But the vast majority of people who go to Vegas are there for recreation, like me. And, like me, they don't spend so much time in Vegas that missing a workout for a long weekend is going to matter long term.

To take time out of a vacation to do something moderately to severely miserable is lol. To save money has to be compared with opportunity cost (e.g., you might come out ahead if you pay $10 to play an extra half hour of poker).

You can calculate what the privilege of walking is. Ask yourself how much fares would have to be before you switched from walking to riding (or if you're one of the few who wouldn't accept a free ride, ask you much a taxi driver would have to bribe you to accept a free ride). Most people would accept a free ride, indicating that walking is considered a negative value - you PUT UP with walking and consider it of less cost than the amount you're saving (in this case like $10) minus the opportunity cost (your winrate) plus yhe health benefit.

There are better ways to save money and get exercise. Walking around the Strip instead of cabbing is way way way more worth it because you walk the same distance but it's more scenic and you can stop along the way if you see something interesting - plus you're not carrying all your belongings.

You can also combine exercise and socialization (rather than exercise and money) and go jogging with 2p2ers, for instance. Or exercise and entertainment by going to whatever gym strippers go to and park yourself on whatever equipment faces the treadmills.

Walking to/from the airport is just so low on the totem pole of Cool Things to Do In Vegas that it's usually reserved for the super busto.

Yeah I do see your point. Really the one time I did the walk was after already living here. My roommate had dropped me off at the airport taking a trip from Vegas but he wasn't able to pick me up at the time my return flight arrived, so instead he dropped me car off in the parking lot at Hooters Casino earlier that day. I considered taking an Uber to pick up my car but I only had a small bag and wasn't in a hurry so I decided to try out the walk. And I did find it to be an interesting walk (for the one time).

On previous flying trips here I generally took a shuttle but they were annoyingly slow, and the once I took a cab it was way more expensive than I had expected. If I had been staying at one of the closer casinos to the airport I certainly would have considered walking.

I agree with most of what you say, but that point is not true for people who enjoy walking. Walking on the Strip is miserable because it's full of people. Walking from the airport is pretty scenic too, especially at night when you see the high roller from the distance and walk towards the lights. Even though walking at night adds an additional safety risk.

Personally, I don't think it's more dangerous than running to Downtown and back between 4-6AM (something that I do almost every day I am in Vegas) but that might be up for discussion.

And again, I totally understand that walking is not everyones cup of coffee and I totally respect that most people wouldn't consider doing it. All I am saying is that it's not bad at all for people who like to walk. Regarding lost time, I don't think a fast walker spends more time walking to MGM than the average shuttle guest does. The one time I tracked the walk with my watch, it took me 32 minutes for those 2.3 miles. But taxi/Uber are certainly faster.

A couple of years ago, I had the bright idea to walk from Fremont Street to Cashman Field to see a baseball game, as it is less than a mile from the Golden Nugget, as the crow flies.

Bad, bad idea..

Hmm, on google it doesn't look bad. Right past the Neon Museum and Natural History Museum, two places I have heard good things about. What made it so bad?

One time I walked from the Strip to the North Premium Outlets, that's a walk I won't do again because of very suspect people on the streets.

So, you're saying uber there and walk back to pick up some post-game entertainment to bring back to your room?

I thought that one was closed down. Probably because CET doesn't want Strip guests parking at Rio for free.

The High Roller. Where exactly to catch it is hard to describe - a nondescript spot on the sidewalk. Highly recco you catch it from a Boyd place first so you see where it drops off.

I fly into LAS a couple of times per month.

Definitely Uber, or Lyft, especially if you are arriving or claiming bags in Terminal 3.

Walking alone from the Airport to the Strip is simply stupid. It is not difficult, unless you have luggage, but it lacks sense in any instance.....unless you are saving your money for recreational marijuana, which you can walk to before heading to the Strip by heading North on Paradise.

(Generally speaking, this is a desert and walking for recreation is fine, there are nice hiking areas and you can always walk up and down the Strip as a tourist; walking to get from the Airport is pretty pointless, unless you are so broke your feet are your only carriage, in which case why are you coming to town?)

On second thought, hire a private limo by the hour, make an interim stop to go buy some recreational and beverages of choice, ride around the Strip for a while and enjoy yourself.

I would still argue that if you would have accepted a free ride, then walking is a net negative.

I mean I get it, walking isn't the end of the world, but let's not pitch it like a used car salesman. "Plus you get exercise too!" is not a selling point. Saving $10 is the selling point, having to walk is the price of $10.

i walk a lot on the strip in vegas (when it's not 110 degrees out)
a lot of times it faster and especially pre uber/lyft it was a lot better than waiting in a taxi line and rotting in traffic to go short distances.plus i do actually feel better getting some walking in after sitting on my ass all day playing poker.

with that said there is no way in hell i'm walking to or from the airport.
