Real answer: Modern America is purposely non-walkable in many regards. Engineers have made this so. I'm not talking about walking through the neighborhood. I'm talking about walking between communities, from suburb to suburb, or city to suburb.
If you do that kind of walking/running (which I did for two years, while reclaiming my health) you will encounter bridges with no walkway. You will encounter roads without sidewalks, and many other barriers.
My favorite walk from the airport was with a 40lb backpack. Walked to the Rio...in June. Also walked that trip from the Rio to downtown. Walking is the pace the earth was meant to be traveled.
