Car rental or uber during WSOP? Car rental or uber during WSOP?

I plan to go to Vegas for 1 week in June. Will be staying at harrahs. I’d like to get away from the strip for food. I also may make a couple of visits to Rio.

I looked at car rental rate for the week...it’s around $260. But what pisses me off is the daily parking fees I have to pay at harrahs(even though I’m staying at the hotel). Do that’s $12x7=84. So $344 total, not including gas. Is uber the way to go?

Uber for sure, especially with the parking fees.

Vegas used to be a 2 trips/year for me. 1 for WSOP, one for extended weekend during football season. I didn't make any trip in 2017 because I was fed up with being nickel and dime to death.

Resort fees
parking fees
fees associated with renting cars
black jack 6/5 payout

Would you consider staying some place without parking fees?

Almost every place has parking fees. I think Venetian doesn't, but will likely be much more expensive anyway.

Or you might consider staying at the Rio. It's not a great hotel, but neither is Harrah's, and they don't charge for parking. It just depends how much time you want to spend at the WSOP compared to time on the rest of the strip.

Otherwise, I would definitely just recommend Lyft or Uber. You can also walk to Rio, though this can be unpleasant in the middle of the day during the summer.

An Uber from Harrahs to RIO would probably be around $9-11. From Harrahs to the Airport is about $12-13. $344 for the week of renting a car would probably be around 30 rides on Uber/Lyft w/ tip and not having to worry about gassing up the vehicle or driving in traffic among people snapchatting & taking pictures/videos while driving. Rideshare seems like the play unless you plan on getting far off strip to the Lakes or Summerlin/Red Rock.

This is the key assumption that everyone seems to be making and the OP hasn't clarified.

For a week, that's four rides a day. So if you ride to the Rio and back and then to dinner and back every day, it's going to be a lot closer than if you take the shuttle to Rio and go out three times.

This isn't rocket surgery. Ridesharing or cabs have a constantly increasing cost with the number of trips. Renting a car is a fixed cost plus a small increase for distance driven. If you go far or take many trips, renting will beat ridesharing. If you take a few short trips, ridesharing wins.

Or you can stay somewhere other than the Strip.

You could also sign up for the CET credit card, which would upgrade you to Platinum status which gives you free parking.

I'm actually considering staying at the Rio if playing the Main this year. Not so much for saving $$ on cabs, uber, rental but for saving time - the line for a cab and sometimes the wait for an uber at the end of a big mtt day 1 is huge. When you've been playing 12 hours and need to get home to get some sleep, waiting 30 mins for a cab is ****ing brutal

add in the benefit of being able to chill in your room/have a very quick gym session during dinner break and I do think there's some decent value in staying there

I never have stayed there to date and I do ****ing hate the dark and dreary casino areas so w/e

at least when you hire a car vs doing cab/uber, you can get away on dinner break and get away quickly at the end of the day and can also feel more controlled about timing your arrival at the beginning of the day

How confident are you that there won't be another outbreak of Legionnaire's disease at the Rio this year?

I am considering staying at the Orleans and renting a car, but I actually like playing LO8.

I like renting a car because it allows me to get away from the strip where there are some very good dining choices at significantly better prices. Also, I don't stay in a hotel during my trip so that is a factor for me that appears not to apply to you. To quote Calipygian:

Yes, get the CET credit card which will cost you 0 dollars. You also get 10k rewards credits if you spend like 500 dollars in the first 3 months or something like that, but the upgrade to Platinum will take care of parking fees. Treasure Island has free parking and is in a pretty decent location so you could park there and walk wherever you wanna go, that is what I did last year. Along w paying to park at Cosmo if I was hanging out on the South Side of the strip. I stayed at the Palms last year and loved being off strip and having a car to do as I pleased. So much freedom. I was able to get a corolla off of hotwire for 220 total for a week for my tips 6/9-6/16 this year. Also look in to Turo which is like car airBnB

Pro Tip: There are typically $50-80 dollar fee for renting a car from the airport. Rent at a different location and uber to save money, that is what I did. Rental cars are fickle, make sure you're visiting on a private browser whenever you check for rates so they do not track your visits and what you're looking at. Weigh your options and always check even after you've booked.

Conclusion: Rental car is the absolute nuts. It is a safe haven away from the hustle and bustle, bad smells, annoying people, hot temps etc.. I haven't been to vegas since last WSOP which was pre weed legalization so my car was my smoke spot as well. I will never go on a WSOP trip w out a rental car again for sure, just too convenient. The last thing I wanna do after busting a tourney is wait for an uber and have to talk to someone lol. Alone time is worth the price alone tbh.

The Enterprise national chain will pick you up and drop off after for free. Just make sure you rent from a non-airport branch. There will be one designated as the closest to where you are (hotel), so just call and ask. Hertz also has a division that works the same way.

There's on aspect where cabs/uber is better than your own car. They drop/pick up essentially at the door. When it's 100+ outside every step counts. It saves you the long schleps through the massive parking lot.

I'd be more confident than I was last year, and also more confident than in other hotels this year.

Legionnaire's is a waterborne disease, so it's readily prevented with mechanical diligence. How many hotels have obsessively checked their hot water heaters in the past year? At least Rio.

This is opposed to something like norovirus where an idiot customer might puke his guts out in his room and then touch the handrail on his way to gamble and then it's kind of a test to see how well and how often the cleaning staff wipe down yhe handrails.

I have used Budget off strip past couple years through Costco. They will also pick you up and it can be scheduled in advance- both times they picked me up to the minute. They will also shuttle you back to the strip. Cost per day total is about $21 for midsize.

Start checking online then call and see if they'll beat those rates.

Do you plan on doing any drinking while in Vegas? If so, Uber is your only option.
