Im checking into Bally's this wed.. originally booked a South Tower room.. if i were to ask for an upgrade, any particular rooms i should ask for?

some things i would like:
coffee maker (searching online, seems like certain rooms have them.. and not particularly all 'north tower' rooms)
nice view (first time in vegas for me and my wife)
nice room (not expecting the ritz or super lux room, but would like it to be clean and well maintained.. been reading some concerning reviews on tripadvisor about stains and old furniture but im not sure if people are just super anal)

don't really care about room size

thanks!

for what its worth, i booked during their 'plan ahead and save' promo.. so the rates were ridiculously cheap (avg 40s.. ranging from 27/night-38-69 on the weekends) not sure if the rate i booked at will affect upgrade possibilities

any chance to get comped buffets or anything like that (as suggested as the previous few posts)

Ask housekeeping to bring you one if you don't already have one.
nice view (first time in vegas for me and my wife)
Ask nicely with a smile. No $20 needed.

This is what I use when getting upgraded, I have a very good success rate at Ballys and check in to a room on the strip 1-3 times a week. Ask if they can upgrade you to a North tower Diamond floor room, tell them it's your first time in Vegas and it's also your anniversary.

You: "Hi i'm checking in",

Check in person: Welcome to XYZ Hotel Mr. So and So.

You: "Thank You, I have a reservation for 123 nights, by any chance are there any complimentary upgrades available? I HAVE NO PROBLEM TAKING CARE OF YOU PERSONALLY FOR WHATEVER YOU CAN DO FOR ME, I'D MUCH RATHER PUT A NICE TIP IN YOUR POCKET THEN EXTRA MONEY FOR XYZ HOTEL, WE BOTH KNOW THEY DON'T NEED IT HAHAHAHA"!

The bolded part works like a charm and I always use it. No need to fold up a $20 bill between your CC and ID. That's very amateur.

Tell them straight up you will be more then happy to take care of them and they will do whatever they can possibly do. For extra consideration you can tell them it's your wifes birthday, your anniversary, anniversary of the first time you went backdoor on your wife, etc.....

Ask them to show you what the room looks like, they usually have a brochure showing the different rooms at the front desk.

After they hand you the keys to a nice room then give them the tip, be it $10,$20, $25, $30, $50 or $100. For a North Tower Diamond floor room at Ballys, $10 bucks is plenty and they always graciously thank me.

Report back here on your success.

I have stayed at the Mirage many times and have gotten small upgrades (view, floor, new rooms while during remodel, etc.), but have never gotten the suite upgrade for simply asking or $20. However, A strategy that has worked for me both at the Mirage and at the Bellagio is to ask if they have any deals on upgrades. I usually would play the "it's a special trip" card and they would usually get the Manager involved and we would work something out. For instance, I was able to get a 1500 sq./ft. penthouse suite at Bellagio for like an extra $80 a night over a really cheap rate that I had. My experience though is that this depends almost solely on time of year and how busy they are. Good luck.

First, +1 re: what King said.

re: what to ask for at Bally's...ask if there's a South Tower Diamond Level room that you might be able to get into. These have ok views, coffee machines, in-room safes (that they charge for...ugh), etc. Apart from that, pretty much all you need is a South tower room...they're all about the same. I managed to get myself upgraded to an Executive Suite in the ST a couple of trips ago, and while it was bigger with a big jacuzzi tub, it really wasn't any better in any way that mattered to me.

Oh, and if you have a Total Rewards card, give it to the person at check-in with your cc. I started doing this a while ago, and once I was able to get an even better deal because there was an offer on my TR that I wasn't aware of that was better than the one I originally reserved the room under.

Yep,tried your trick last night.. got us a north tower diamond (i didn't specifically ask for it though) and the nice lady got herself a nice tip. Not much of a strip view though, mostly looking at paris and PH. Still, very nice room for the price we are paying.

Thanks for everyone's advice!

Is it recommended to call for reservations if I want to try this as opposed to booking off an online site or should it not matter?

I did the $20 trick at PH on the Mon of Labour Day Weekend. It was for two rooms but both registered under the same CC.

I was at the counter with my buddy checking in with a gentlemen in his late 20s I assume. There seemed to be a Supervisor near by assisting the other clerks in his area. I thought we were doomed. My buddy asked him if there was any complimentary upgrades available at this time with the $20 bill placed on the table already. He got us upgraded to two Junior Suites. We gave him the $20 after and went to our rooms.

No go at Aria this weekday. Go upgrade to better view and moved up floors which is something they would do for nothing if you ask without saying you will tip them but I tipped the clerk anyway for the not really great service. Guess I wouldn't be staying at Aria again unless it was free (imo, there are better hotels for the price.)
A no on buffet comps as well. The clerk said they can't give it out unless you booked it with your reservation.

I've done it twice sucessfully, once unsucessful at Golden Nugget (got $20 back no problem after a "sorry, sir I don't have anything available"), but my wife and I are low rollers who stay downtown (4 queens). The trick is to know what you want. I knew I wanted a jacquzi suite with the big ass tub. (saw a pic of these, maybe at $20 trick sites mentioned above.

Both times did the same drill. Came up with $20 in hand, set on counter, left wife to do it by myself. Used same line with (female) clerk, "listen it's kind of a special occassion and I'd love to surpise my wife with a little upgrade to a jac. suite. I be sure to take care of you" (wiggle $20 here). They know the drill, both times it was "i can do that.", it's like $80 more for that room a nite, I think, but they don't even really advertise them (you can't book them), so I think they are empty most of the time.

4 queens is nice place to stay downtown, btw, 2nd after Nugget, altho Main Street Station is nice, but not on freemont St.

Just checked in at Flamingo and did the $20 trick via KingBin's method. Worked like a charm!

Walked up and ran good right away got a young woman that seemed happy to chat it up and giggled a bit when I mentioned that I tip. I was booked originally for a bottom of the ladder room but she set me up with a GO Room up very high strip side!

We are here 5 nights and are enjoying every time we come in and are able to see the beautiful view of the strip...thanks for your help guys!

Holy **** dude, you got a GO room using the $20 trick at Flamingo? Ive been reading up on different sites, and people have a tougher time at the Flamingo and usually only get something they call a junior suite over there and maybe 5% have said they got a GO room. Im thinking about staying here and would love the GO room, so is there any other tips besides trying to find the one person who you got?

Flamingo is a tough nut to crack but 2 weeks ago I got a Neopolitan Suite Go room for 5 nights at around midnight, I was shocked as **** that it worked!

I checked in for 5 nights at Paris yesterday afternoon, chatted the guy up (Bryan with a Raiders jersey on) about football and the Giants game getting delayed, asked him what kind of room I was booked under. Then I asked him if they had any decent upgrades available, played it off like it wasn't a big deal. He said he had a nice room on the Executive Diamond floor that he'll put me in. Strip view, a little bigger then the normal rooms. My friend that is staying in it said it's pretty nice, a lot better then their normal rooms.

Tried it at Luxor on December 3rd and it worked nicely.

Had the $20 between my passport and credit card, made some small talk with the guy and while I quickly turned round to check my suitcase and bag behind me, he had whipped the $20 out of sight immediately.

Figured that meant I was good but I asked about any complimentary upgrades and he gave me a King tower room with jacuzzi bath (lol).
