that's worth paying for (either in upgrade charge or bribe). Paying the $20 bribe to get a higher floor is LOL hi-larious, while paying it for a room with a view is still kinda lame since you can get one of those by asking nicely, or just sucking it up and enjoying the view of the HVAC units rather than the Mirage driveway.
Yeah kinda agree with you that paying for a higher floor or for a better view is kinda lame. Maybe I'll just ask nicely for a better view and move on.

At Harrah's is there really any difference between Classic, Deluxe, Luxury?

Is there any conclusive proof that you will get a complimentary upgrade easier by shuffling a $20 to the clerk, than just asking nicely?

I only say this because historically (not just at LV) I have had a lot of success by just smiling at the front desk staff, making some light chit-chat and then asking if there is any possibility of a complimentary upgrade/high floor/nice view etc.

Is it conceivable that because it works with slipping the $20, people think it works *because* of the $20? Is there evidence to suggest that without a cash bribe, clerks will refuse any complimentary upgrade?

You will get a nicer view or higher floor by just asking nicely. You can say it is your first time in Las Vegas or first time staying at that particular hotel, then very likely they give you one of the nicer view rooms. But you probably won't get a complimentary upgrade such as presidential suite at a higher price/night by just asking nicely. $20 trick would defo work for complimentary upgrades if there is any available.

I'm comp'd a few nights over the weekend of June 25th. If everything is taken care of would you attempt the $20 trick (upgrade from delux at MB to some sort of suite) or just let it be?

I checked a fellow 2+2er in at the Rio today. I just asked for an upgrade an he gave it up. Got a text that it was "bigger then other casinos for sure". After we secured the upgrade I asked the fellow 2+2er if he wanted to tip the guy and he threw him a $20.

had the base level room booked at the mirage last week on a comp

20 dollar tricked and she tried to upgrade me to a suite

when she said they were all booked (bs or not im not sure but she took way too long trying to find one just to fake me out) she said she could get me into a deluxe room or something

room was def bigger than i booked, private elevator, lcd tv, jacuzzi, pool view (she offered me pool or volcano view and i asked for pool)

totally worth it

The one time I tried the $20 trick at the Venetian I was shot down because the woman checking me in was a manager. I felt like such a tool. I've bribed bouncers at clubs many times, but for some reason bribing someone at a hotel check-in made me feel weird.

does anyone know?

Does it matter where you book your room...like if I book through Priceline or similar sites will it be less likely that the $20 trick will work?

$20 at Mandalay Bay got me bumped to a badass strip view suite at THE Hotel during March Madness.

If I try the $20 trick at IP, could I maybe get an upgrade to I don't know....Harrah's? Ah who am I kidding, maybe a room without roaches.

Will this work at Encore, am heading there from UK for 10 days next week.

I got a poker room rate but wouldnt mind an upgrade.

Last year my room was great but on the side facing XS nightclub or the European pool below (albeit a very high up room) I still heard the club music thudding all night long on weekends. I got ill and happened to be room bound for a weekend so was kinda unhappy with being kept awake by XS.

This sounds like a joke- but it is 100% true: last year I stayed for a week at the IP and failed at the $20 trick. My toilet only worked half the days- it kept not filling the tank so there was no flushing . I kept having to stop at the desk and report the problem for maintenance to fix.

So I suppose the $20 upgrade (if it had worked) would have been to get a room with a working toilet. This would have been worth it, by the way.

My attempts this year:

Planet Hollywood (Jan): Semi-Success. Was told she couldn't accept, but found an upgrade anyway. Returned $20 and wouldn't accept it back! (?) Note: The PH has changed owners since then.

Wynn (Feb): Fail. Was offered a strip view for a small upgrade fee. $20 was returned.

Bellagio (Mar): Fail. Was told lakeview (fountain) rooms all sold out. $20 was returned. Did get a nice corner room facing north-west.

Aria (April): Fail. Was told they cannot accept. $20 was returned. Was still very impressed with the room (high floor), but freeway view. (Side note: Was on a comped stay; not sure if that matters).

Paris (May): Success! Was on a partial comp, but got one of the Premium suites. Her eyes lit up when she saw the sandwich and I didn't have to say anything. Wanted to go back and tip more after we saw the room.

(side note: yes, I have been doing a lot of hopping to find a hotel / program that suits me best -- still haven't decided between Players Club and Total Rewards).

I have a comped room at NYNY this week for four nights. What room type am I likely getting comped and what upgrade should I expect for my sandwich? Has anyone ever tried the trick at NYNY before?

I just got back from vegas, stayed at NYNY. Tried the $20 trick. He gave me my money back and upgraded me anyways from a Basic Skyline room to a Park Avenue Deluxe room. Not a huge upgrade but it didn't cost me anything so I can't complain.

I pussed out at NYNY. lmao

I pulled out the sandwich and my $20 fell to the floor. I picked it up as the lady looked up my info. She says "well usually rooms wouldn't be ready this early but we can make accommodations today" before I could even get the $20 back on the table. I laughed at me not even saying anything as she told me about the room, how to get to it, the hotel, etc...

fyi, I won't stay at NYNY again but I knew that coming in... lol...

further fyi, the cash games at mgm ftw

I'm going to stay at the Hard Rock Hotel starting Friday the 16th of August for 3 nights. I was going to try the $20 trick but I'm not sure what upgrade to ask for because the room is already in the HRH tower. Besides a better view or higher floor, is there anything else specifically I can ask for to get upgraded to? Thanks.

TR from Aria:

Lady: Hi, welcome to Aria. Can I please see your ID and CC you used?

Me: **slides $20 in between** Hi there, is it possible to get a higher room strip view or any complimentary upgrades? It's my girlfriends first time here and I'm trying to impress her.

Lady: **blank stare** Oh, I'm sorry you left some money in between your ID. Here you go.

Me: Uhhh...thanks?

That's a new one?

first let me say by no means am i a racist. I am just trying to help customers get an upgrade. I am currently staying at the Aria right now. Being persistant i tried 4 different times to upgrade..especially since i had time to wait for room availability. There are a great deal of people of asian descent in this hotel. all very stuffy and rather unfriendly.. Fail fail Fail.. the 4th time i purposely waited in the line of a young latina. very friendly i asked about upgrade from reg room to a corner suite.. 3 min later she had hooked me up. i didnt even offer the 20 until she was completely committed to upgrading me for 5 days. I said WOW how did u manage.. and she simply said ..cause I AM THE BOMB.. I said yes you are and decided to give her 40..still WELL under the price of a 5 night upgrade. So if you have patience..be selective on the line you choose..cause it was a long wait for sure. SUCCESS!
