I totally get why a lot of bands don't sound good live on stage, especially in a festival and/or outdoor setting.

But with a residency like U2 at the Sphere I would have imagined they have the resources to make it sound good even if they don't go the partial playback route?

FWIW, I feel asleep both during a Cirque du Soleil and David Copperfield show.

Saw an ad that U2 was extended for 11 more shows.

Speaking of bands that are better live, a Phish run seems inevitable here.

Radiohead would be a world event.. I think they've earned it.
First sensible musical opinion expressed in this thread

Saw U2 on the Zooropa Tour in 1993 and they were brilliant - also watch Rattle and Hum if you think they suck live.

Seen Radiohead and Morrissey live (both twice) and they were fantastic too.

Most recently, ie earlier this month, saw Deacon Blue on their greatest hits tour and they did an acoustic set for the first half and then regular set after the interval - again excellent.

Is that English? How old are you?

I've never been a big fan of U2. They were big in the 80s and are obviously a draw to older/middle aged people with some money that are trying to relive their glory days.

The last Phish show I saw (pre-hiatus? Does anyone remember that?) I fell asleep in my seat. Can't blame the drugs, but maybe the lack of? Also, it was in July in Phoenix, and probably north of 110 degrees (F) when they started. Probably lucky no one (me!) died of heat exhaustion.

AFAIK, the last time they played Phoenix. Maybe 98? Just 25 years ago? **** me.

I'm old and I can't stand them.

Really can’t see Radiohead doing it. Maybe Nine Inch Nails?

Green Day would be a pretty nice fit. They would seriously rock up that place.

Obviously the next Sphere residency should be Ween.

I haven't been to Vegas in over 25 years, and though much new has opened I don't feel I've really missed anything. But this seems cool. I saw a headline today: "Sphere and Loathing in Las Vegas." Got me interested.

I wonder how many other cities are planning one. A New York City based company, Madison Square Gardens something or another is behind it. Seems NYC, LA, Atlantic City ... who else ... Orlando, Texas somewhere ... would be naturals. Price tag?

It must be cool to drive by this and a thousand other versions:

Madison Square Garden Entertainment. They also own a sports arena in New York but I forgot the name.

Just over the past couple of days there was talk about building a smaller 50ft sphere on Sunset Boulevard in WeHo.

Unfortunately true. They are a band that cannot be bought.

I don't know if you've seen it in video, but sometimes the images are animated. I don't think I'd like driving by it. Vegas drivers have enough trouble paying attention as it is without a 500 foot Pacman eating all the cars.

Wow. That might be the one for me. Not a big fan, but I did see them live once and they were very good. It would be fun to see them again, decades later.

I think most of the sphere acts will be pop acts that are not my thing. It's likely to be a rarity to see good musicians playing their best.

I wonder if the $10M is just an advance

Read a book about ticketmaster and apparently artists at big venues do get 80-90% of ticket sales... Of.course, when they are actually touring the country they have big expenses.... Partly why fees are so high. where arena get some or most of their revenue

ticketmaster gained a near monopoly largely on the backs of their "you could charge $200 a ticket and sell out each show, but your fans will be upset with you if you charge more than $80, so we'll structure it to look like $80 is the cost of the ticket and $120 is fees from us - you collect 2x more money and the angry fans blame us, it's a win win"

Just dropping in here to add a comment about our experience last month seeing U2 at the Sphere. I'm not a huge fan, but appreciate all the classic songs they've written over the years. I went because i have friends that are HUGE fans and they really wanted to go to this concert! So, we bought tickets back in February as soon as they went on sale, i think we paid about $750 per ticket in the lower section, about 15 rows back. (i hear they're way more expensive now...) My opinion - it was one of the most amazing live concerts i've ever been to (and i've seen a lot of shows over the years!) I thought U2 sounded great but more importantly the visuals in that arena were incredible! I feel like we spent the entire concert just looking around in awe! The sound system was great, and the choreography was just amazing!
I would highly recommend to anyone that you go at least once.
I am curious about how it will go in the future. U2 was able to invest the time and money to design/choreograph the whole show knowing they were playing dozens of shows. For a band who plays just a few shows, i just wonder how they will be able to maximize the possibilities of this venue. I guess time will tell!
I can think of a few performers who i would go back here to see, so i can't wait to see who gets booked in the future.

UFC will have an event there in September. Going to be a snap purchase for me as soon as tickets go on sale even if they're $1000-2000.

Supposedly there will be more spheres, so a world sphere tour would be a possibility.

I don’t want to pay that much to see U2 but it has to be better than the Postcard From Earth show I saw there. The visuals are spectacular and we’re interesting at first but about 20 minutes into it I got really bored and personally I didn’t like the message.

Although some people in the audience clapped at the end and some people do like the show.
