Solo Trip Report: Wynn (5/25 - 5/28)

This year at work, I got a disappointing bonus. So I built a case for a raise and, somehow, it worked. I got a 20% raise "effective immediately." To celebrate I booked this trip for myself. Shipping out Friday afternoon, staying until Monday.

In past years, I've made a number of mistakes that have resulted in disappointing trips. Chief among them is a complete failure to pace myself at, well, anything. Classic tourist error to go hard the first night then run out of gas, or money, and the will to enjoy Vegas. Therefore, this trip, I'm pledging to act like the boring oldish dude I am. Get sleep. Don't play marathon sessions. Exercise. Chill out. Go to the pool.

I've had this plan before. I've never executed.

Anyway, reservations at Sinatra and Cut, with one open night. Looking for good sushi that isn't Kabuto - suggestions? Ideally a place where they'll just keep bringing me pieces until I tell them I'm full. I don't like to fill up on appetizers.

Also, re: pool, how early do I have to go down there to get a chair? I just want to sit there, read a book, maybe take a nap, and enjoy having zero responsibility of any kind. Maybe eat a $30 sandwich. Can I do that with a regular lounge chair? Really any pool tips would be appreciated.

Will of course play lot of poker, generally a 2-5 player but will play higher and lower. Also enjoy PAI GOW, aka the greatest game ever.

Shoes and money to follow.

Looks like four days/three nights. Will you be solo? Take your bankroll. Divide it by four. Set a gambling limit for each day. Set a drink limit for each day. Set a sleep time limit (I usually try for 2-3 am and sleep until 7-8 am).

Sounds like you want AYCE. I have done Umiya near Rio, was good. Others like JJanga...check out the fine and casual dining threads.

If you are solo, I doubt it will be a problem. Usually there is a single chair somewhere. Even if there's a towel on it (and no items like shoes/clothes), ask anyone nearby if it's claimed. If not, take it. You can always move if someone comes back and complains. Time of day is relevant: Sometimes later is better--the early crowd is gone and you can show up and hang out. Of course, if it's 100F then shade is important and you are not as likely to find the ideal spot.

Was thinking about going to Sinatra this summer, so interested to hear what you think of it.

Can relate to trashing yourself on the first night, so hope you manage to swerve early trip carnage.

Best of luck!

Re: Solo Trip Report: Wynn (5/25 - 5/28)

Definitely encountered the "go out too hard, too fast" many times. Some things I've found helpful, esp on a solo trip-

1. If you need to get your gamble on early, do so, but set a limit and stick to it. It's not worth it torturing yourself until you're "weapons free", if you're like me just throw the towel in and scratch that itch immediately.

2. Whatever things you wanted to accomplish during the day, map it out and consider each one "earning" a future degen session or whatever. For instance, these days I make sure I do some sort of mobility/stretching after breakfast before I play. Same thing with watching a movie- "forced" myself to do that and, shockingly, ended up actually enjoying the movies.

3. If you start to run bad call your family/friends/whatever. A sympathetic ear is really helpful. I had a week-long solo craps trip several years ago where a few days in I just wanted to leave. Spoke to my wife every day from that point on and it helped get me through it.

I've never had to fight for a chair at the Wynn pool, plus you could theoretically hit the Tower suites only section (requires a room key, but you could just reach through the door and trigger the latch manually or wait for someone to go through).

I think Sinatra is decent- it's overpriced but definitely above average Italian.

As far as sushi goes, an AYCE place you might want to try is Goyemon. Short cab ride just west of the strip. Keep in mind I've never been there myself, nor would I be able to tell a good sushi restaurant from a bad one. The only reason I mention it is because a Vegas local that is Japanese recommended it to me at the poker table.

I'm in vegas atm with some friends. Things are going well right now but that can always change quickly. Can I have you're wife's phone number just in case?

Oh yeah and on topic: for god sake just have fun man and don't listen to any silly advise about setting limits and sleeping schedules.

I had all this figured out (see my trip report for details). Arrive in Vegas for 10 nights, proper sleep/rest, proper food, proper workout. Try to limit gambling to minimum, no big swings. What did I do? 16-20 hour days from 6am to midnight. 0 workout entire trip. 98% junk food. Probably blew through 1k each way per day. Long story short, dont plan. Or do plan if you do have the proper discipline! Good luck!

Obviously the goal is to have fun, but as OP alluded to when you go too far off the rails it ceases to be fun. I suppose we all have to approach things our own way but personally I learned long ago to build some non-gamble fun into my day just in case I run terribly.

Pai-gow is the best time killer in vegas!
Perfect for that odd time between pool time and dinner, or early mornings with everyone drinking mimosas and bloody Mary's.
Have fun OP, I'm really missing Vegas right now.

Skip going off the rails and take it straight to the abyss.

Wynn is also on the eastside of the strip, easy to take backroads and go up.
