I can't find what Sahara had, but SLS has 80k sq ft of convention space. It has a 50k sq ft room and several smaller ones. To compare to its neighbors, Riviera had 140k. Westgate has 200k.

OTOH, SLS is much smaller in every other way compared to those two so its convention space may be just as proportionate. It doesn't seem like a place that pushes conventions to me. It is more like a nightclub with a hotel and casino. Maybe that is an image they could improve.

Sorry to hear this property isn't doing well. Sahara was where I played my first NLHE tournament and my first hands of blackjack.

That was indeed the plan. Make it a nightlife and restaurant spot that is a well-recognized brand to LA visitors, who arrive by car and wouldn't mind being off the beaten path a bit. That's essentially right out of the Hard Rock/Palms playbook, but we're now living in a world where the major strip hotels have spent a few years learning how to beat those places at their own game. SLS didn't get that memo, or thought their brand was more valuable than it is.

Maybe finally opening up that uncompleted casino project in their neighborhood will save them.

Spoiler:
The 200 room Asian themed Lucky Dragon next to Allure.

If you're already on the strip, why would you take a shuttle to take you off the strip to a resort with no attractions?
The only thing a shuttle would provide is another method for their own customers to go somewhere more exciting.

They now have commercials on local channels target locals. The commercials are similar to the Stations Casino commercials. It seems like they are trying to change their marketing strategy.

I think the Starwood news puts to rest any rumor that SLS will throw in the towel in the next couple of years. If anything, it makes it easier for Starwood to take over later.

What it means: The SLS has yet to overcome the challenge posed by its location on the far end of the north Strip, well removed from the foot traffic and visibility enjoyed by the resorts farther south.

Last time I was at SLS I was both amazed by how beautiful it was, and how simultaneously empty it was at the same time. The couch in their sports book was the most comfortable chair I've ever sat on in any sports book in Vegas. But no one is there. I think this is an example of a project well done but an inability to know how to do the marketing job to go viral. The location isn't the greatest down by the north end, but the hotel is so beautiful that I wouldn't think it should matter. When I was there, I thought it was an awesome place, but I also left after an hour or two. I think the thing these hotels should try to look at is how to get people to be entertained enough by the place they're in to want to stay for long stretches of time.

I visited SLS for the first time yesterday. There was some cool stuff (like the flashing floor) mixed in with some complete garbage. The ceiling looked exactly like the ceiling at Winstar and Winstar is made out of a tent so 'nuff said about that.

Yeah, there's nothing beautiful about that place. Cheaply done Cosmopolitan knock-off is how I would describe it.

If that applies to Bazaar Meat I would highly recommend it. It's a great dining experience, although very pricey at normal prices.

The promo reads all restaurants but some restrictions apply. It doesn't expand on that.

My March Madness group has gone here the past two years to watch the games at Umami burger. For these purposes it has worked very well. I played BJ there for a while and got a few comp offers the following months, but wasn't able to take advantage of them. While I like it for the purposes above, I'm not sure how they can last since they aren't on the strip. The food there has been very good. Umami is solid for a sports bar, and Cleo was really good as well.

I was a huge fan of the Sahara prior to its closing and usually made it up there to play cheap craps and blackjack whenever I was in town. A few weeks back, I made my first trip to SLS. It was cool to walk through there and see what's changed and imagine how the old Sahara lay out used to be. I don't the get all the hate for the place. I thought it was pretty cool for what it is...a refurbished OLD casino and hotel. The floor was pretty empty on a Monday at 11 am but all of the staff that we dealt with were super helpful and friendly. I really doubt it has the power to make it decades like the Sahara but I hope it doesn't burn out as quickly as everyone thinks.
