Finally went out and played some poker! Before that though, I went to the MGM gym to get a quick and refreshing workout in. It's right next to the pool and the entrance to the Signature towers:
Then went back to the room, took a quick shower and headed out to play here at the casino. Didn't feel like venturing too far for my first session, as I knew it would most likely not be a very long one.
It wasn't really a very eventful session, evident by the fact that I didn't write down many hands. They are not very interesting, but let us run through a few really quick.
First interesting spot is when there is a BTN-straddle to $5, two players call the $5, and I find
AQdd in cutoff. I make it $30, a very short stacked black woman moves in for $18, and rest folds. Board runs out
A-K-8-6-3 no flush possible, but she has AK.
Then lost a bit on some QJ-hands, like when I raised from 2nd position with
QJo (7-handed at this point). Player next to me calls, before BB makes it $40. It screams strength when he does this from BB getting a price to complete, and I don't think this is the hand I should be calling with. So I fold. Turns out BB had KK, and guy who called my raise had JJ.
Also raised another time with
QJo from MP to $10 (my standard sizing in this $1-$2 game), and SB and BB call. We see
8-5-2 with two hearts (I have none), and SB just leads out for $15. Don't think I can float here, so I just fold after BB did the same.
Then I raise
78ss from 4th position, and only SB calls. He is new to the table, but looks decent enough if nothing else. Flop comes
9-3-9 with 9s. He donks into me for $20, and I chose to call in position here. If he is just taking a stab with a hand like 55/66, there are some good turns for me + can use all overcards as scare cards. Turn is one of them, with
Kd rolling off. He does however bet again, this time $30. Since I didn't pick up any more equity I have to release.
Most interesting spot was maybe when an OMC raised to $12 from EP1 (his first raise since I sat down), and I have
A9ss in BB. Definitely a call, so we throw it in and go heads-up to
A-4-6 with latter two in spades. Pretty awesome flop, but not one I need to go crazy on. I will only get action from Aces that has me crushed if I start raising etc. I check, and he checks behind.
Turn is a random red
3, and I probably make a mistake by checking here. I should bet $10 or something to get value from QQ/KK type of hands, in addition to build up the pot for the nuts. And if he is slow playing something and raises me, I can easily call. As it was I did however check, and he bets $15, and I call.
River is a
K, not my favorite card. I check, he bets $30 and I think about it for a while before folding. Tempting to call given decent prize, but I just don't see any hand I beat here. And with me having spades, I cannot see what he is bluffing either. I think betting the turn would have given me a better idea of where he was in the hand, but as mistakes go it's not the worst in the world.
Overall just bleeding chips in small pots without winning many, and although I won a few the result was -$128 USD. Not an ideal start, but I don't think I played terrible. Just didn't get any good spots in what was a mediocre game, with not a ton of action at times.
I'm gonna try to take a quick nap now, as I have been awake since 3am and need a bit more sleep to keep going until tonight. Will obviously come back stronger after that.
