Day Zero: Airport lottery and July 5th!

I always arrive early to the airport. Like paranoid early. It was a lessons learned from previous trips - See Run Good - Wife Mad (2012 trip report).

First Class upgrade:
I tried numerous times to get upgraded to First Class. Apparently the $20 trick doesn't work for airlines. They wanted $800 more. No thanks. I did note that the seat in the middle wasn't booked. I had paid the extra $43 to upgrade to business class seats (AKA normal seats from a few years ago). I am sitting in the window seat... no one was showing up for the seat. People passed by... they kept on going and going and going to the back of the plane. Finally my seat mate in the aisle came on.. Pretty sure he was last to board. They called: All people aboard.....

I Just won...The "Airplane Lottery!*"

*tm

The "Airplane Lottery" is hard to hit. QUalifications for airplane lottery:
1. Noone in the middle seat
2. Upgraded to First Class
3. Sit next to aesthetically appealing girl

Powerball Airplane Lottery Qualifications:
1. No-one in the middle seat, you and the aesthetically appealing girl named Jade are moved to First Class.

I personally have not hit the Powerball Airplane lottery. Very rare!

Anyhow, my aisle seatmate and I fist pump our luck. Off to Vegas we go.

The flight lands about 20 minutes early and off we go!

I have hit the secondary Powerball a few times:

1) exit row window seat

OR

2) middle seat between two very narrow aesthetically pleasing young ladies

Day 1: Best Day Ever! Wynn Poker Main event

So after the flight landed, I checked into the hotel (Cosmo) and had a decision to make. Do I take it easy day 1... or go register for the Wynn Main Event starting in an hour? Well... why would I want to take it easy day 1 of the trip?

There I am registering for the Wynn Main and I get to my table with a MONSTER pot being shoved to the guy to my left. Literally the first hand of the tournament this guy doubles up with AA v. 66 on a flop of K64 turn A river blank. The 66 guy obv thought the other villain had AK? No idea, in either case I like my table. We are 1000000 blinds deep. My kinda tournament. I will not bore you with the ups and down of the tournament. I will say I built my stack up to 70K (from 25K) twice, absorbed losing 99 v AK, AK v 99, TT v AJ, AK v AQ and won one race... There is some merit to winning flips. I was able to absorb the losses. No-one really believed anything I did at the table, which can be good and bad depending on if you are hitting hands sometimes.

The final hand ended up with me reshoving 88 from the BB v. CO raiser who called 18BB with 22. Ironically I lost to a set of deuces.
It was 1230AM I was exhausted having been up since 1200 AM eastern time.
So you ask why is July 5th the best day ever?

Two reason:
1. If you are a dog.. it is the best day ever! My dog is a giant golden retriever (big boned). He is a great dog, loves food, kids, treats, people, bacon, 3 day old pork chops from the trash and choking while woofing it down (attempted) and not biting my hand off while reaching down his throat to get it out....... yea... so good dog. Anyhow, if you rank him 1-10 as a guard dog... he ranks about a 0.1. I give him 0.1 because, well he sounds mean!

Side story:
I had to get my house "reevaluated" for value from the town I live in. AKA: We are going to raise your taxes. I am talking to the guy over the phone and I just get this feeling he is a miserable person in general. So.... when he comes over my dog Buddy is barking his head off. I mean the deep GRRRRRRRR, GRRRRRRR, BARK BARK BARK! (all while wagging his tail). I yell out " DOWN, CUJO, DOWN!!!!!!"
I proceed to swing open the front door as wide as possible. Buddy, of course is sitting on the stairs behind me hiding from anyone...well because you know, it could be something scary out there. This guy takes a step back and I swear.. he almost fell off the porch. He peers in and he goes "Is his name really Cujo?" "Yep, but he doesn't bite" I wrestle the dog back to his cage... which of course he doesn't like because he likes people and wants to play with them. He scratches at his cage and is generally frustrated. The home estimator guy was in and out within like 2 minutes. My taxes went up 1%. So yea.. prob not solid strategy.. But well worth it IMO.

OK OK back to the main story: Why is July 5th the best day ever for my dog?

Spoiler:
It is the day after the War (July 4th).

Any noise scares this dog.... Fireworks, the neighbors car backfiring, thunderstorms outside, thunderstorms in the next state.... yes... big scaredy dog.
Needless to say, I got pretty much no sleep from midnight July 4th until past midnight July 5th after the Wynn Main. Probably not optimal now that I think about it...

Pic of "CUJO!"

2. If you are me... well you met your most excellent wife on July 5th out in Vegas! That.. is a whole other story. Meeting the wife during WSOP, hanging out... etc etc.. yea. I have it made TBH.

U]July 6th - The day of waiting.[/U]

So in my exhaustion and infinite wisdom I left the Wynn without registering for Day 1C. I figured I would get up early and go over to register. Well, that never happened and I ended up being Alternate number 178. The cashier was like it will be 2-3 hours. I was thinking.... I will take the overs. I instantly wanted to unregister, but hesitated and was going to kill some time. I should have saved myself the time. I waited about 4.5 hours before I just gave up. They were on like 150, but I realized I did not want to start a tournament 5 hours in when everyone else had a huge chance to build a stack. Even with the structure it would have been 60-70BB deep, I was just tired from waiting.

Vegas strategy: Either register early or go find something else to do while waiting for the poker tournament. I dinked around playing Ultimate Texas Holdem, BJ, and a video poker. Eventually cashed out for $80 bucks after 4 hours or so playing. I decided to unregister the main. I hated to do it, but I was not 100%.

I took a break, ate some Tacos at the Cosmo

Ended up a the Venetian $600. I build the initial stack of 15K up to 34K with little effort. No bounties which was quite hard to do. The play at this tourn was abysmal. Remember how I mentioned about no one believing me... well take that to the extreme. I ended up losing 1/2 my stack to 88 v my KK 3 bet pre with J42 board. VB flop, VB turn... and river was an 8... obviously. Pretty much, that is how the rest of the tourn went. I ended up with no bounties... and out in under the next level. I loved the fast paced structure, players, and bounties. I will def play these next year.

Anyhow - following the bounty tournament I decided to call it a night. It was late and I was beat. Wouldn't be great if I had a hooker and blow story......?

I think option 2, depending on the results, could qualify primary... but again - results orientated.

I love PLO!

4 way pot

Tough fold by seat 3 on river for 2.1k more w/863x on that board. Guy who win was LAG and had 88. Didn't repot flop bets.

Of course I'm subbed!

I know what you mean about July 4. The first year I moved out to Colorado, I rented a house literally across the street from my suburb's fireworks show.

Great for my niece who was little, but old enough to enjoy fireworks at the time. Bad for the poor gold dog.

Great story about the assessor. Who's a good dog?

Day two: Rock and Roll and PLO

I decided it was time to get back to the core of the trip and play some STT. Running over to the RIO (ok, using Lyft.. its to hot to run), I register for their $175 STT. It lasted about 5 hands when I pickup KK, older guy raises like 250 *25/25 blinds. I shove, another guy insta calls and the older guy calls.

Yep: old guy with QQ<KK<AA. That was quick... sigh

Next $175 I live streamed on TapTalk. You can read the results. Older guy - limps UTG at 100/200 with like 2.2K. He is not the type to limp a big hand. Button I shove A9.. he tanks and calls with 98 off suit. WTF? I love how he wanted to play a hand cheap then decides to call off 70% of stack with it. Anyhow A9 < 98. Out.

I decided to register the 1.1K satellite for the Main Event. Always weak fields in these things but the blind structure is pretty fast. I go from 6K down to 4.5K within the first round. Not really optimal play. I take back about 750 of those chips on bad river bluff tbh.

The blinds end up going up, no one busted the first 1.5 hours which is pretty detrimental to this type tournament. You really need to build a stack as blinds escalate quickly. Exactly what happened. I get it all in eventually with 3.2K stack at 200/400 with 66 v AK... didn't work out for the 66. It happens.

Craps or PLO? What's the difference :P

I insta text wife I am taking a break. I think CRAPS! YEA BABY ROLL THEM DICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then I remember something: CRAPS is F&*(in expensive if you lose. Why not play some high stakes PLO!

So I get on the list of PLO 5-5 blinds 10 Mandatory straddle. They called my names for the Kings room.

PLO higher stakes:

PLO can either be one of three games:
1. Everyone limps, sees a flop, then proceeds - normally found in AC or with other older Americans playing
2. Some people limp, gets potted, everyone calls and sees a flop and proceeds. Usually happens with one Swedish player... maybe German... generally the game I love.
3. No-one dares limp, raise, pot, get it all in.. reach for more money... rinse repeat - Always happens when you have Swedish/Norwegian friends in the game. Hold on to your pants, start taking shots because you are going to be F*()king rich.... or walking home!

The game that I was called for was the type 2. It was fantastically soft. We had the older gentlemen (2) getting it in weak with under straight draws, non nut flushes, rebuy. We had the passive players who just check everything/play straight forward. We had a Asian kid (AK) trying to push the action which works.... when you get the cards, sometimes, against the right villain. Literally I think there was 3 fairly competent players (CP) at the table. Juicy game:

Example Pot:

Raised preflop to $60 by AK, 6 callers.

Flop 863
Asian pots, loose old guy calls for less, decent villain flats, lady calls for less.

Turn Js - AK checks, CP checks

River: 6c.

Asian kid bets $525
CP raises all in for 2.4K more.

AK tanks for 8 minutes...

Relevant history CP bluffed AK out of 1.5K pot earlier in session when straight hits river.

What do they have?

Spoiler:

AK folds faceup - 863A.

CP - 88AJ

Nice 4K pot....

I ended up winning a few hands here and there with well timed bluffs/flush draw with right Ace. I took down a decent 2K pot with A2KQ on a T9A board when turn hit nut clubs and old guy chasing second nuts calls my pot bet.. Plan was to CR all in on the flop since I was SB, but another CP who had the straight draw checked the flop in position...grrr. Anyhow it was a nice pot.

Ended up 1.7K for the session. Def nice to win something!

Anyhow I am off to Wynn this AM for their 100k. I will finish Part 2 day 2 later on - Spoiler alert: The Giant is coming!

Super standard in these STT's. People are much more willing to call a shove than an ordinary bet.
