I can't think of a worse location for an MLB team than Vegas. Over half the season would take place in 100+ degrees!

I assume they would need a dome/retractable roof like Arizona and Houston.

How many sports teams are a lock to come to Vegas now? I would think bringing in each sports will water down overall attendance for each sport (unless there's THAT many tourists who would show up for 1 or 2 games a year).

A lot of baseball games are night games and they would obviously play in a dome. Also the weather is really good right now and it’s not bad in April or May either. And it doesn’t rain much in Vegas.

FWIW Vegas has already had minor league baseball teams that played outdoors.

More sports teams means more opportunities to host big events. A few months ago it was the Stanley Cup Finals. With more teams a World Series, Super Bowl or NBA Finals is possible. An all-star game could happen (despite the negative media coverage of the last one in Vegas).

But I do agree that the average regular season game seems less significant with more teams in the city.

I doubt it. Billionaire owners love bilking tax payers for free stadiums but hate having to share them with other teams.

There used to be a lot of shared stadiums, but currently the only one shared by NFL and MLB teams is the toilet the A's and Raiders share in Oakland.

The trend goes towards not even having NBA and NHL teams share a stadium, there’s absolutely no way the NFL would approve a new stadium that’s shared with an MLB team.

As borg23 said, the only city that’s doing that right now is Oakland and they are losing their NFL team and will lose their MLB team unless a new stadium is build before 2025.

As already mentioned here and in the other thread, people saying MLB in Vegas can’t happen because of the weather either don’t know there’s a team in Phoenix or don’t know that Phoenix is warmer than Las Vegas. Playing MLB games in a stadium with a retractable roof wouldn’t be a problem at all in LV.

Nowadays, every single new park/ field/ stadium etc should be built with a retractable roof.

I completely agree. I can't believe new stadiums like the one in Minnesota does not have one.

Depending on the location a roof doesn’t necessarily make sense from a business perspective. The proposed new stadium in Oakland doesn’t have a roof and SunTrust Park in Atlanta that opened last season doesn’t have one either.

FWIW, the Braves claim that decision wasn’t about spending an additional $150-200 on a retractable roof but about fan experience because baseball should be played outdoors. Not sure what to think about that.

I totally agree that Minnesota should have added a retractable roof. Not for playing in November which happens once every blue moon but for play in April and early May when it might still be pretty cold and rainy. In Kansas City, there are very early plans for a new stadium Downtown but none of the renderings include a roof even though fans were extremely upset at the start of this season because the weather was consistently bad.

A domed stadium would be a necessity, unless they plan only night games from May 15 - Sept 15.

Sitting thru a 51s game in the daytime in the summer is excruciating.

Someone I know in NY seems to think it will be sold as a casino and this entity is aware of the need for major repairs etc. Decent source too.

Viewership for the Red Sox/Yankees elimination game in NY (pretty much the biggest possible non World Series Game draw for MLB) drew 4.1millyish this week....Saints blowout game same night drew 10 milly (and NFL viewership is on the decline).

This seems like Vegas never learns and this is the wrong time in both the economic cycle and sports history to begin building multiple stadiums.

All network/basic cable TV viewership is in decline.

Take a look at league revenues for both, and see how much they've increased in recent years. Also, team valuations. They're doing just fine.

Regardless of the sketchiness of "someone I know seems to think", it does add up. The lot is zoned for a casino which is no small thing, meaning why give that up when there are plenty of places you could build a stadium (that also don't require the cost of demolishing a hotel?)

I can't think of a better place to sell $15 drinks than a baseball stadium that's over 100 degrees half the year!

Rio doesn’t need major repairs but a total remodel or demolishing and rebuild. Remodel of the Palms costs North of $600mil, the Rio will probably be more expensive but that’s known to everyone who stepped foot into the building over the last couple years. Not only to potential buyers.

#1 reason why an MLB stadium at that location is not very likely is the cost of buying the parcel and tearing down the Rio. That’s gonna cost a billion on top of the billion to build a ballpark and the billion expansion fee.

There have to be cheaper viable locations for a stadium than that one.

The thing about a total remodel of the Rio is they can do it in stages because the hotel as a whole isn't in disrepair. Except for the escalators, and those seem to break on a regular basis everywhere in Vegas. The Rio has been operating on a more or less regular basis all along. Can't say that about the Palms, which seemed like it was almost dead.

I can't imagine the Rio isn't fairly profitable. I suspect CET is looking to offload a property to raise cash and pay down some of their gargantuan debt. The problem CET has is the Rio is worth a lot more to them than it is to anyone else. The WSOP pulls in lots of hotel guests, who in turn spend/gamble a lot of money for 6 weeks every summer. Any potential buyers would probably assume they would lose that, unless they can get CET to sign a 10 year agreement to host the WSOP.

I wrote an article about this. Tax records show Rio's land with buildings is worth $538 million. That assumes the enterprise value is $0 in a sale price, which it isn't.

The Riviera demolition was about $45 million. Rio must be more than that with its taller, bigger buildings, though asbestos wouldn't be an issue like it was at Riviera.

Now we're over $600 million just for the land without accounting for what Rio's value as a going concern is. The Raiders paid $77.5 million for its land that required virtually no site work.

There are far better sites for a stadium, even close to Strip. Wild Wild West has almost 60 acres, which is about the size of the Raiders stadium lot, and you wouldn't need as much land for MLB. Demolishing WWW would be far cheaper, too, and Station has shown an interest in selling it.

There are also hundreds of acres of one-story industrial buildings all along the I-15 corridor. Assembling those would also be a cheaper alternative.
