Is right now a good time to move to Vegas, get an apartment, and become pro? Is right now a good time to move to Vegas, get an apartment, and become pro?

I've been winning online and live, so I'm going to take my shot at becoming pro. I've been playing this game for a long time. I'm 28 and have nothing to lose, no responsibilities.

Is moving to Vegas a good option right now? I tried moving down there 6 years ago, so I know what to expect a little bit, but I ended up just living out of my car, playing 16 hours a day, and busting in three weeks. I won't let that happen again.

I'm not worried about covid. The only thing I am worried about is how it will affect the poker games.

What can I expect about finding an apartment? Are the games there good right now to make a living at despite all what's going on and the possible lack of rec and tourist players?

I've also been considering moving to Las Vegas. Reading reviews of apartments and trying to find one in a decent area has been somewhat of a challenge. It seems any 1 bedroom under $1,000 gets a lot of negative reviews no matter where its located in the city. Any locals know of any good apartments under a $1,000?

I've read/heard good things about Summerlin and Henderson. Have you checked there? Also, what's your timeframe in moving? I'm thinking November.

Edit: Also, where can I find other poker players who might want to share an apartment or place together?

I checked Henderson and Summerlin. Most 1 bedrooms seem to be in the $1200+ range. I'm also wanting to be a little closer to the strip but heard areas near the strip can be a little dicey. Maybe Spring Valley area would be ok?

I'm thinking first week of December for a time frame. Trying to find accurate info about apartments since I'll be signing a lease before seeing the place in person. Looking at potential 3 months leases so that way I can look for a more permanent place in person. I also need a place that is fairly quiet and not party central. Forgot how much work goes into planning a move.

There is a thread at the top of the Las Vegas Lifestyle thread for poker roommates/houseshares. Other than that I think people post for roommates in the housing/apartment section of Craigslist.

Me personally I would prefer to just have a one bedroom place to myself.

Lol is this thread a troll? Vegas is going to be in a mess for a while. High unemployment, conventions and events won’t be coming back for a long time, the governor is very strict with the lockdowns, so why move to Vegas now?

What’s the bankroll?

Not a troll. Just want this to happen. Bankroll is $7k.

If not Vegas, where else? My state specifically sucks for playing poker. I'm a few hours away from Vancouver. Is their poker scene a better option?

If serious...

NO Now is not a "good time" as conventions and tourists are not coming to Vegas.

Wait 12 months and bring the bankroll up to about $20,000 as I assume you will be living off it also.

Okay. But why don’t you have more than $7k? Why haven’t you saved up more money for something like this? What if you spent the next 1 or 2 years saving up? How much could you have?

This virus could be around for the next 2-3 years. Even a vaccine won’t get things back to normal.

Vegas seems to be doing better than other areas as far as poker goes. More poker rooms opening up, 8 handed tables at some properties, plenty of players. If you're in an area where your local rooms aren't open then being in Vegas seems pretty good. At least in Vegas you know there is a game going.

Speaking generally, perhaps next March but not before .....so long as the person has a steady income lined up. For example, someone who already works remotely or runs their own business that is feasible from Las Vegas. Keep in mind that December/January will be harsh in Las Vegas, no convention business, a likely crappy retailexpect more layoffs in the casino industry with a ripple effect for small businesses in the area.

As for OP, specifically, ...absolutely NOT a good time. There are a number of posts above which detail some hard questions OP needs to answer for himself. First, he is already claiming to be an online winner and a live winner ... so why move with only a $7K bankroll.

OP, you blew through your last bankroll in less than 3 weeks in Las Vegas
Other players here are not worse than they were last time, they are not going to just give you money because you are a "Vegas Pro". Try working on your skills at play and bankroll management right where you are now. Try living on your poker winnings for about a year. You should build up your life-roll a bit, you do have something to lose .... if your dream is to be a poker pro, then give it a trial run where you are. Then decide what it is about Las Vegas that lead you to play 16 hours a day and lose everything in 3 weeks. You absolutely need to answer that BEFORE you make your next move here....

That there is "a game going" means little if OP can't beat those games AND also cope with Las Vegas as a place to live. His post gives little evidence for meeting either requirement. For some reasons, he blew through his whole bankroll in less than three weeks in his prior attempt, trying to play 16 hours a day for example.

He would need to find and fix the clear leaks in his game and , probably in his non-game life he would anticipate here. Playing 16 hours a day and losing everything in three weeks is something he would need to plan a way to avoid.

My advice is DONT do it at this time. If he insists, maybe get a JOB here first and foremost, and try playing only X hours per week ?

If you are taking a shot for the second time, you aren't good enough right now to survive. Now that doesn't mean you shouldn't take a shot but you will likely fail.

I've played full time for over 4 years now at 1-2 and 1-3 and have averaged around $30/hr over 5,000+ hours. Not trying to brag. Just showing my credentials. So not only do I know what it takes to beat the lowest limit Vegas games for a solid hourly, I've also seen many many people take their shot. The number of success stories can be counted on one hand.

It takes a combination of qualities to make it out here. Your poker knowledge and skill level is but one thing. There's game selection, room selection, an actual love for poker, quitting when you're not playing at least your B game.

So by all means, take that shot. Just don't have any illusions that you just have to only put in hours and rake in the chips.

You will lose prime time in your life to build an actual career and a fun life, instead of being around gross degens in a gross town playing a game where the competition will only continue to get better going forward.

edit:trollollol $7k. Take that money and enroll in a HVAC repair or plumbing class or some kind of trade school and hope you can get an apprentice ship from it. That would be a much better gambool.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but I have to be honest. A bankroll of 7K is nowhere near enough. Even if you are single, you need a fully funded six month emergency fund. You also need at least 50 buy ins to your current stake. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Was the 5,000 hours done over the 4 years? If so, then that is like 25 hours a week. If OP is only half as good then playing fulltime at 40 hours a week should get him a slightly smaller salary per year. Gives people who aren't as good hope they can still make a small living at the game.

I agree the above combination of qualities are needed to succeed but some would rather grind out $15-$20 /hr doing something they love vs making $30-35/hr doing something they don't enjoy. Even more so if you are debt free and nobody else is relying on your income. OP could get a part-time job that covers basic living expenses while grinding full-time until he knows he is successful. $7,000 is 23 buy-ins at 1/3 after all. There is some wiggle room there if things don't go great right away.

I would also be interested to know Koshka's opinion on the changing landscape of low limit poker in Vegas over the years. As a person who has done what many aspire to, do you think Vegas is a place, or will be in the future, for the diligent few who have the skills and combination of qualities or would they be better served elsewhere like Florida or the east coast?

Serious inquiry as I am comtemplating moving to Vegas myself in the next couple months.
