Any suggestions for moderate to easy hikes out at Red Rock? Never been and heading out to Las Vegas with a bunch of first timers. Any suggestions?

most of the hikes can be easy, it's just what you make of them

also you don't have to go into the fee area to hike. just drive the main road thru the red rock canyon area and keep an eye out for trails (hint: you'll see people parked around those areas). pretty much anywhere you stop will be a good hike and will offer some good views of the surrounding area at some point.

If the weather is good and you are a somewhat experienced hiker, I think even the moderate-strenuous ones on the map are relatively easy. At least the ones I did in the past. The average times on the list are pretty conservative, even if you stop for pictures a lot.

I am not in good shape and not an experienced hiker. I did the La Madre Spring hike in August and it wasn't too tough for me. I was glad I brought a hat, sunblock and a bunch of water.

White Rock Loop is roughly 6 miles and gorgeous.

I recommend parking off Rocky Gap Road by Willow Spring and starting the loop going clockwise.

If you're coming from out of town, I would of course say renting a car is the easiest way to see the trails. If you have a group large enough to warrant it, there are tons of tour groups where you can pay them to take you around, and they pick you up from the hotel. Might be easier for you to go that route if you don't mind shelling out the $70-$150 per person

I consider this site the bible on hiking in the area....step by step instructions and pictures of nearly every hike you can do in a 100 mile radius.

IMO there is never a need for a tour guide. Rent a car or van. Forget the tour guide.

If you want a group experience Vegas hikers on Meetup is fantastic. They have thousands of members and multiple hikes pretty much daily from all skill levels with experienced guides.

If you like getting up at 6am. I wish I could do more hikes with the meetup groups, but they don't really suit poker players' hours.

If doing these hikes during WSOP, got to start early in the AM to avoid the brutal heat, right?

Yep, but they start them all insanely early even in the winter.

For Red Rocks or anything in the valley, yes (and you may want to avoid it altogether). As an alternative, there are a lot of hikes around Mt. Charleston that are perfect for the summer months. Anything 6000 ft. + should be fine. When it's 110 in the valley it's typically 80-85 in the mountains, and cooler than that if you start in the morning. There's also a decent amount of shade since the area has a lot of forest. It's best May-mid July before the monsoon sets in and brings storms to the mountains nearly every day.

X2 to mount Charleston awesome experience when it's hot.

Has anyone done the Mt. Charleston Marathon in the past or is doing it this weekend?

The 5k+ ft elevation drop makes it one of the easiest courses to qualify for Boston.

Easiest until the next day when your knees lock up and you can only crawl around on the floor until April.

Can't be that bad, otherwise they wouldn't sell out every year? I thought about doing it this year but when I made up my mind about doing a spring race, they didn't have any spots left.

I'd probably change from racing flats to a stability shoe for that one though.

I run up to Mt Charleston/Lee Canyon for summer hikes and picnics. Keep in mind that you will get winded quickly at the higher altitudes.

Wouldn't say "can't be that bad", I would say "it doesn't have to be that bad":
