I’m a 58 year-old CPA from Iowa. Decided to try a trip report. This will be my 3rd trip to Vegas this year. Two prior trips were profitable at the poker table but I couldn’t stay ahead of the wife’s burn rate since she usually goes shopping when I play. And we also eat quite well. This trip was booked two months ago and was supposed to be a poker buddy and me OD’ing on poker for three days while my wife was in Colorado on a girl trip. The short story is my buddy backed out and the girls backed out. So my wife is a last minute addition and her friend will be there too. And I told them all the shops are closed.

Here’s what I think will happen but I’m always flexible.
1. Tuesday 1pm tourney at Aria
2. One other tourney. Maybe at Caesar’s. Maybe the Venetian Survivor tourney.
3. Wednesday night dinner at Al Solito Posto.
4. Various sessions of 1/3 and 2/5. Resorts World is part of the plan.
5. I have no idea what my wife and her friend have planned.

Fly out of Des Moines in five hours. Land in Vegas late afternoon. Three nights at flamingo. I got this booked before the prices increased drastically. I’ll attempt to
post a bankroll and a shoe pic.

Check-in line at the Flamingo had about 300 people in it. Even though I checked in online, we had to stand in line to get to a kiosk to print our keys. However, it only took about 35 minutes. We got to our room and it was still dirty. So they have us a room with a strip view and $50 food credit.

My poker game can best be described as tight-lucky. I’ve found it’s fairly profitable in the long run. I decided to go to Caesar’s and sit in a 1/3 game since the wait was the shortest according to Bravo. I bought in for $200 and get A’s on 3rd hand. There was a raise to $12 and two callers so I made it $45 and they all called. Cliff note version is a guy flopped a set and I went broke.

Fresh stack of $300 and a few hands later I get Q’s in BB. SB raises to $21 after two limpers. I call and they both fold. Flop is QJ3. He bets. I raise. He shoves. I call. He’s drawing dead on turn and now I got a little over $600. The secret to winning poker is to flop sets and avoid hands where the other guy flops a set. I decided.

Next hand of note was my preflop raise to $15 with AdKd and get one caller. Flop is A83 with two diamonds. Cliff note version is I made my flush on river after running Q’s. He had pocket 3’s and I called his river raise. Now I’m stuck about $200 again. Remember what I said about flopping sets?

Then I was reminded that people don’t travel all the way to Vegas to fold third pair. I called a $13 preflop raise with K2 suited on the button. Flop was K/10/3. He bet $25 and I called. He checked an 8 on turn and I bet $60. He called. River was another brick. He checked and I bet $60 again. He called and I showed him my K2 and he mucked.

Twice I flopped two pair and filled up on river when other guy made a straight. Once he flopped it and the other time it was on turn.

Twice I raised preflop and completely whiffed the flop but three-barreled anyway. Lost almost $300 in those two hands. Like a dipshit.

Session was just under five hours. In for $500. Out for $511. My brain feels like a shrinky-dink (showing my age with that analogy)

For breakfast it’s Diet Dew and a baseball bet. I did have a chocolate Bismarck but I forgot the pic. Try harder.

Off to Aria for more poker

Sat down with $300 and dusted it off in two hands. My A3 ran into A8 on an A/8/3 flop. Left me with this

Then my pocket Q’s got run down by KQ Which left me buying in again.

I did flop a set of 2’s to get to here -almost $450.

Now it’s lunch time. Pizza from Moneyline and some rocket fuel.

The last three hours of my Aria session was pretty uneventful. Won a nice pot with a flopped flush but lost it back when my two pair on flop got flushed out by runner-runner. Mostly I was card dead. Missed a lot of draws and cashed out $379.

Session loss was $221.

Went back to the Flamingo and decided I needed to bet on Phoenix. I’m not a big sports bettor so it’s not big money.

Then it was off to Resorts World. The place is huge which made it seem uncrowded. Very clean. Lots of food choices. The poker room is huge also. Good table spacing and well-lit. Very similar to the Encore poker room. I was surprised by the number of women playing 1/3. At least two at every table. Some had 3 or 4.

I bought in for $400 and the crappy cards resumed. It got to the point where hands like 6/5 and 5/4 were looking good. Lucky for me there was a horrible player at the table who couldn’t lose. But he was amusing. Several players thought trapping the luck-box was a good idea. But the river sent them home broke. My whole session can be summed up on two hands. I got red A’s and then I got black A’s on consecutive hands. Went from being stuck $150 to cashing out $562.

Bought a smoked turkey sandwich and a praline tart from the deli attached to poker room. Ate it at the table before cashing out.

Gonna head back to Flamingo to see if I’m still married.

I agree. Usually we eat very well but her girlfriend is here with her and she doesn’t want to infringe on what was supposed to be my poker trip.

We visit Vegas 3-4 times a year and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it this crowded. We’ll be back in November though.

DONKEY ALERT

I called $12 preflop with pocket 5’s. Three of us saw a flop of A/10/3. Two checks and I bet $25. SB raises to $60. I call cuz he’s been a bully. Red 5 on turn. He bets $75 and I shove. He calls and scoffs when I show my set.

I didn’t travel all the way here to fold an under pair to a raise.

This is our third time staying at Flamingo. First two were fine. But this time the housekeeping staff is overwhelmed. Our room hasn’t been cleaned since we got here. RW was awesome. Very clean and spacious. We are also coming back In November.

Profit from Caesar’s session was $526. Lost a nice pot on river when we I had pocket Q’s and a guy check-called me all the way with AK. Hit his ace. Ugh.

Cashed out to spend a little time with my wife before dinner at Al Solito Posto. She accompanied me to sports book to place a bet on the Cards tonight. Then we dropped $20 in a slot machine and won $60 on first spin. Cashed that out ASAP. I’m not a fan of slots or pit games. The odds are never in my favor.

She made a comment about women with boob jobs and asked me if I wanted her to get one. I told her I’d rather have a new golf cart cuz I can control who gets in that. I guess my feeble attempt at humor is unappreciated. Might be a pretty silent dinner later.

I left out all the small pots that went both ways. I think I lost my first buyin very quickly on every session but I play better when I’m stuck a couple hundred. Lol. I saw some pretty sick hands that I wasn’t involved in too. The action at Caesar’s was crazy.

Dinner tonight was at Al Solito Posto which is in Tivoli Village. The chef from Esther’s Kitchen opened it earlier this year. Menu is old-school Italian. We ordered the Eggplant Parm (ate most of it before I took a pic)

Spaghetti and meatballs (veal/pork)

Chicken Parm with Rigatoni alla vodka

And lasagna

Everything was really delicious. We first ate here in April. It’s my wife’s co-favorite along with Lotus of Siam.
