Austin is the least repulsive of Texas' cities. It is actually in an attractive setting (very rare for Texas), has a vibrant cultural scene (very, very, very rare for Texas), and its politics lean liberal (otherwise unheard of for Texas). If someone banished me to Texas, I'd still shoot myself, but I'd go to Austin to do it.
My second favorite Texas city is El Paso. I like the multicultural vibe of the place; of course, its large Hispanic population is why many people absolutely hate it, to the point where they'll drive 700 miles to shoot up a Wal Mart.
Many people are telling me that as the Vegas poker scene dries up, the place to play these days is Texas. The overall intellect of the state that elected Governor Abbott suggests that the games might indeed be very easy. I'd love to read some trip reports. Also, I know that carrying a gun is mandatory in Texas, but what kind and how much ammo?
