His recent tweet says it was confirmed that it wasn't random and he was followed. So it probably wouldn't have mattered.

Here's his tweet if you don't have subscription to LV newspaper:

I do have a cheap sub to it, but I tested the link in another browser and it worked. Maybe it goes by IP.

Aren't you more of a target by carrying around a backpack?

There's no valet at the wsop. If you valet at the front of the casino you have to walk like half a mile to the wsop.

So take this with a grain of salt as I'm two degrees removed; I talked to the friend of the guy who got robbed who had spoken to him on the phone.

The guy got robbed around 4AM as he was leaving the Rio. He was tired from a long session so he didn't really have all his wits about him. A car pulled up on him and a guy got out with a gun taking his backpack and the keys to his rental car (maybe so they wouldn't be followed?). His backpack contained a bunch of chips from a few different casinos along with some electronics and all together was probably worth about $10,000. Apparently the guy who got robbed is really messed up emotionally right now because of this incident.

I've been robbed in Vegas (not at gunpoint) and can totally understand that he would be wrecked. It's brutal.

Also hard to understand that people think it's somehow feasible to grind WSOP for the summer and not regularly have large amounts of cash on you. Casinos don't treat poker players like they do pit gamblers. You can't wire money to the cage, they won't easily give away boxes (IME), and clearly they don't provide proper security for players. If you're going to be the poker center of the universe for a month put a damn security guard in the parking lot.

I could walk half a mile for 10k. Can you rent one of those handicapped motorized carts at the RIO?

Quite possibly a court would consider that to have been a reasonable security measure to have had in place ....

Cause of action for negligence, since it happened on the hotel property, IF there was inadequate security .... just askin' ,

There was valet at the WSOP up until a couple years ago, but I would never let a valet monkey **** with my car.

Yeah, but I bet Caesar's would ban him from all Caesar's properties for suing them. And he's a poker pro.

Another story of people getting robbed at the Rio. Was it last year where people kept on getting there rooms robbed at the Rio. As mentioned earlier how does the Rio not have sufficient security presence in there parking lot to avert these type of incidents?

So a guy that calls himself an OG who finally gets a little gunplay is shook? Lol. Time to rethink that nickname. Valet costs are negligible to being played by actually not being an OG at all. He's in a rental. Who cares how the valet handles the car, Bill?

I can't recall seeing any security at all in that parking lot. But I applaud robbers if they're robbing the guy(s) that agree to a chop and then run out the door with all the money.

I have a concealed weapons permit but I don't carry at the WSOP. I might have to re-think that for next year.

Moot because as Gobbo said, no valet at the convention center any more.

AFAIK even with a Concealed weapon permit, you can't carry in a casino. I think that even applies to off duty police, the incident with the off duty cop pulling a gun on someone at a poker table(just joking around) comes to mind.

Think about it.

Rio has more than 40 acres of parking space, including a total of seven levels of parking distributed on two garages.

I have no claims to industry knowledge, but I venture to guesstimate that without introducing access control to parking (like most strip resorts now has), "sufficient security presence to avert these types of incidents" around the clock could call for 30 - 40 full time positions.

While I could be off by a factor 2, even as little as 15 full time armed security positions would cost the Rio more than half a million dollars per year in salaries alone.

1st of all its not for a whole year, only 6 weeks right? 2nd its not 15+ full time positions.

My math might be way off but there is Three 8 hour shifts per day, so 21 shifts per week.
A full time employee would cover 5 shifts a week. So it is slightly over a total of 4 full time employees is all that is need and for only 6 weeks, at what $10-11/hr.

And I am talking about 1 person on duty at all times driving around in a vehicle of golf cart making like 10 minutes rounds to cover the whole lot(Just WSOP lot). That would be enough to deter something like this.

Exactly a marked car or two or perhaps a few golf carts with lights on would likely be enough to deter this.
