The most important interaction at a table is of course playing the game. The more game action, the more engaged recs become and less the need for socializing.....

However, it is a mistake to believe that a lack of social interaction, coming from a no-action silent nit, particularly one wearing headphones or watching netflix, does not impose an external cost, one a rec seeking entertainment might not care to bear.
Do you feel the same way if you sit down at a bar? Should the guest in the next seat be required to engage in conversation with you while he drinks his beer? I’m trying to imagine somebody next to me at the bar telling me I should stop using my phone and be more social or otherwise he’s going to leave and do something else..

I think I covered your “external cost” argument already. Other players have no obligation to be social just because you feel it’s impacting your EV. If their silence negatively impacts their EV as well, that’s their choice, not yours.

Yep, no obligation, just good common sense and concern for others in the community.

Why? Most of the time I play casino poker for exactly the same reason I sit alone at a bar. I am traveling and have nothing better to do.

If somebody else plays poker or sits at the bar to socialize, that’s their prerogative. But it’s up to other guests to decide for themselves if they want to engage in that or not.

Is this the epitome of DGAFs description of a life nit?

OTOH, No one is saying you have to be the life of the party.

If anybody ever asks me why I don’t want to get into conversations with poker players I’m just going to show them this thread as a representative example.

There we go again, 2p2, THE poker forum, and another thread in which people express how awful, tiresome, boresome and excrutiating playing poker is. I'm really amazed some of you have not moved on with your lives onto something that makes you a little happier. Some would justify the hate cos we are talking about 1-2, yet that's what most people play anyways.

Having said that, thanks for a good chuckle, some of the posts on this thread are golden!

Is that guy losing money to you while you are sitting there at the bar ? Do you want him to continue to do so ?

If you think he is more likely to continue to do so, would you accommodate a conversation if that is what it took .... or would you leave that to the bartender ?

Excuse me for trying to persuade folks that a choice to be somewhat social with recs is perhaps a better choice than a choice to hunker down behind headphones, a hoodie and sunglasses or otherwise to suck the oxygen from a room.

An active game requires less social propping up, but a table of silent nits set mining is bad for retaining recs in action.
