I will be coming down to Las Vegas this summer from Washington state for poker. While there, I plan on buying a new car. Do Nevada dealers issue 30 day paper plates, allowing me time to return home and register in Washington, or will they automatically register the new car in Nevada. Interested if anyone else has experienced this. If not, will call several dealers and get their consensus.

I suggest you skip straight to plan B in any event.

Buy it in Oregon, no sales tax.

Tax will be a jurisdictional thing...even if a dealer in Oregon wasn't going to charge it, the taxman may well want his bite when it comes time to register the vehicle in Washington.

Different States do things differently on the purchases though, with two of mine being purchased out of State (neither in Nevada though).

Ohio gave me a paper tag and I was responsible for sales tax when I finally got around to registering the vehicle in Texas. Louisiana, however, charged me the tax at the Texas rate at the time of purchase and then remitted everything to the Travis County tax office (who then mailed the plates to me).

If tax is going to be charged at the time of purchase, make sure it is on the net price and not the gross price. I actually got told when I bought in Ohio that they charge based on gross price of the vehicle even though, here in Texas, it is based upon the net price.

On the phone inquiries, OP may do well to deal with a fleet manager. They are typically on salary as opposed to commission and don't blow smoke with all the add-on crap.

I did followup with Nevada dealers on the registration process. They issue a 15 day paper plate. Washington state will collect their full sales tax rate on registration, but will credit the amount already paid to Nevada.

if you are going to register in WA anyway, why not just buy it there?

Won't presume to think OP was in same boat as I was, but when I bought out of State, the two biggest issues were that they had precisely what I wanted and they were willing to deal.

When you want specific options and your local dealers won't dealer-trade and the order banks have already closed, you go to plan B, which is swinging the best deal where the car is located...with the F-Type, it saved me $32K.

Ok tangent now, because how do the differences you cited create a delta that large? Have I just been fortunate always living in a big city with plenty of competition?
