One of the deals I do literally every time I'm in Vegas is the free buffet at M if you play enough video poker, which, for weekday lunch, is only $850 coin in. Plus they have a whole bank of full-pay machines that have up to 99.8% payback (including 9/7 TDB).

June 22-25 "TR"

Why the quotes around TR? Because unfortunately this one won't be as detailed and barely qualifies. Why? Because for some reason, all the pics I took during the TR never got saved to my phone. So, I can't post anything from the trip, and will also have less recollection of events. That said, I'll try and make up for it with text only, and spice things up a bit with some pics from my local after my last trip in May.

OK, so the backstory- we just bought a new house AND sold our old one simultaneously. All of this wheeling and dealing took place starting late May when I was last in Vegas. I had arranged this trip before the house situation for two reasons-

1. Vegas. Duh
2. My parents are back in town, and I got an entry into a free roll slot tourney at the Wynn. 25k for first, up to 75k depending on points earned (more on this later).

That was more than enough excuse for me. Since my parents always want to see my kids, they're coming along. Since our nanny is a member of the family and my parents want to see him too, he's coming as well. Since two trips in a month is too much for my wife, she gets a nice long weekend alone.

Now, in the interim we've acquired a new house and have to move everything in literally the day before I leave for Vegas. It's helpful to my wife to not have the kids during the set up over the weekend, but I did leave her in kind of a lurch. Hopefully it'll be a great trip and I can at least return home with some much needed cash! We're looking at about 50k in necessary or greatly wanted improvements to the house, so extra cash is critical at this time.

Day 1

We arrive around noon on Fri and head directly to the Wynn. Meet my parents and their room is ready, but mine, the nanny's and kids are not. I decided to set myself up with a regular room this time (don't need anything else) and give the Parlor suite to the nanny, with a connected room for the kids. We hit Red8 for lunch, and it's the typical decent fare. Afterwards- my room is ready, nanny's and kids still not. Odd. We're all on the same floor at least. My mom wants to hang out with the kids anyways, so they relax in her room while my nanny and I head downstairs with my dad to start play!

Ice is the only word worth using. I took pics of the few before draws, but in this case it's no big deal I have no pics to show, because I literally hit NOTHING. I think I was stuck 3k in under 2 hrs. DEFINITELY not the start I was looking for.

I may as well describe the tournament structure now. There were two components- the tourney itself and a separate giveaway. For the tourney, everyone's place was determined by best scores- pretty standard. If you earned 30k pts over the weekend (tough to do, that's about 500k coin in at my usual machines/denom), any prize was multiplied by 2. If somehow you hit 90k pts (not going to happen), the prize was multiplied by 3. So I figure, if I team up with my dad, we can definitely get him to 30k pts. After we get him to 30k, we start working on my card, and if we get to play a lot/run good, perhaps both of us can cross that 30k mark. As we're both entered, it doesn't matter who gets to 30k pts without knowing the results- we just need to ensure one of us does, then work on the other guy.

The giveaway is separate, you got up to 10k cash (with the same multipliers) if your ticket was drawn. One ticket for every 1k pts earned. Again, my dad and I are going to split this 50/50 so it doesn't really matter who binks, so long as one of us binks.

Anyways, with that in mind, my dad and I have teamed up for most of this play. I can't remember exactly how many pts we earned but it was maybe 1k. There's no way we're going to make 30k at this rate, collectively we're stuck 6k already. WTF.

I decide to take a break and check on the room- turns out the room is STILL not ready. Desk girls are talking a lot and tapping on the computer a bunch- that's never a good sign. I find out that the guest occupying the Parlor suite has last minute decided to stay another day, so they have to move my nanny and kids to a different floor. I gotta say, I'm pretty annoyed. If you want to stay another day, fine, but selfishly I feel if you're going to affect other people's plans, then they should have made HIM move to another floor/new Parlor suite. Strike 1 for Wynn's typically excellent service- there were a few other points during the weekend where they missed the mark as well. Hope it's not a sign of a larger change.

Anyways, here's a pic to break up the text-

My first bink after the May trip. That multiplier on DSTP pay never seems to line up with a big hand.

I hit the machines with my dad again and the ice continues. I think we made a quad 2 and a quad A in there, no kicker either time. My nanny's room is finally ready- on the 34th floor (we're on 55). I take my dad over to XS to register for the tournament while my mom, nanny and kids hit the NYNY arcade.

Going to XS was kind of cool- I got to see what the club looked like during the day with relatively no one around. I wish the pics had come out. It's a sweet looking set up with a lot of booths/tables- not much open floor space for people to crowd into. I'd assume when that place gets going if you don't have a table it's pure hell. The main DJ area opens up onto the outside/adult pool, where there was some daytime DJ thing going on. If that were my scene it looked like it would be the bomb.

We grab our tournament credentials and time slots- both of us are slated to play at 10am tomorrow. Head back to the machines before dinner at SW at 6pm.

And... the ice continues. So, so brutal. Honestly we did a better job avoiding UX, etc but it didn't make a difference. We made ZERO hand pays in that entire period, and I head to dinner legit worried I'm going to RUN OUT OF MONEY before the weekend, never mind earn 30k pts.

Dinner at SW was good and helped settle me a bit. I got the Kobe rib cap as usual and it was a solid 8/10. Sidewise we got asparagus, creamed spinach, mac and cheese, potatoes au gratin. All the sides were also 8/10 except the potatoes (9/10). Perfectly cooked, slightly burned on top, just the bomb. I got a Kentucky mule to try and unlock some rungood/maybe start a new LVL rungood drink. The mule sometime in the last year has become by drink of choice for some reason.

Dessert is spot on- we got a ton, but gotta use up that comp somehow. Two orders of the funnel cakes with dipping sauce- the waiter was like, "you know that's a lot of food, right?" but it's just easier to split given the large table and that way my kids don't get into a fight with each other "sharing". After dinner, I get the kids to bed, then head for more play with my dad.

ICE CONTINUES. Jesus. At some point around 10pm, I get him upstairs- I'm dead tired having been up before 5am, and I know I should go to bed as well, but it's the first day and I'm stuck BAD. Have to try and turn this around. I had been playing mostly 5 play when on my own, but that hasn't done anything. I switch to 10 play and my nanny is watching me just shovel money in. He has this slightly annoying habit of lamenting misses that just don't matter, stuff like drawing with two pair and not making a full. I know he means well, and I also know one needs to turn two pairs into fulls, pairs into trips, etc, all the "meaningless" hits to survive- but I just don't care. I'M LAMENTING the total lack of premium draws and premium hits. Who gives a F that I'm not making fulls??! So I'm playing, sort of hoping he just goes to bed, when I get dealt trip 2s 10 handed...

and make my FIRST bink of the trip. 2k and change jackpot, ONLY stuck 5k now!

Turns out, my nanny was just hoping that I'd hit something, and as soon as he got to see it he's good and he's off to bed. I feel like sort of a dick. I play on, give back another 1k before I come to my senses and head upstairs. Rough first day.

Nice draw with a monster multiplier- ONE TIME!

Result-
Spoiler:

Standard.

Day 1 result- -6k

I've done this many times with mixed results. Greyhound = no discernible effect as far as I can see, sad to say. That said, as you'll see in upcoming installments I gave them another try...

Leon,

The optimal drinks for gambling are:

Whiskey (neat or on the rocks), vodka soda, water, sparkling water, coffee, baileys and coffee. Early in the session, beer can be acceptable.

I'll give anything a try- water and coffee have always been my go to. Alcohol only when desperate to unlock rungood.

Sorry about your issue at the Wynn Leon. Hope things go better.

Just wanted to say thanks, I hit the below about 5 minutes after arriving to check in to The Cromwell at their bartop machines. 3rd spin!

Would never have played except I love this thread and wanted to give it a shot. They didn’t have TDB on this machine and so this hit was DDB.

Day 2

I wake up at 5am as usual; pretty tired, could have fallen back asleep, KNEW I should sleep more rather than sleep-deprive myself and probably post an AM loss, but I just can't help myself.

That AM session was pretty terrible until I hit a 3 card royal. That put me up for 2k for the AM and in a much better mood. That is, until I decided to stupidly keep playing and try and force the recovery from day 1. Of course, you know what happened- I gave it all back and ended up that AM session dead even.

We went to the buffet for breakfast and I was immensely irritated at myself for giving back the entire royal. I actually had to remind myself that-
- I'm in Vegas
- losses happen, and
- I'm here to have fun. Sure, losing sucks, but give me a break- I'm upset bc I'm down, playing a game I have the luxury to play while other people are dying in wars, etc. Look at the big picture.

With that thought, I clear my head and get ready for the rest of the day. My mom and the nanny are planning to take the kids to an arcade while my dad and I play in the tournament. We're both slated to play at 10am. I'm going to order Rolling Smoke BBQ for lunch. The afternoon is wide open, and we're going to Sinatra for dinner.

My dad and I play for a bit prior to heading to the Encore for the tournament- just another cold session.

Random DSTP hit out of nowhere- sure would be nice if it could do this with a royal or real premium hand.

The tourney was interesting. Standard "play three rounds, top two scores count" set up. Each session was 30 min and they have sessions running all day, so there are a lot of participants. It's going to be tough to win but hey, anything can happen right? The game itself was new- standard "push the button as fast as you can" strategy, BUT random symbols pop up on the touch screen which you have to be ready for- if you tap on them, you get a ton of bonus points. Basically you have no shot of winning if you miss one of those symbols. The main symbol would automatically increase your score to FIRST for the round, so anything can happen. My dad and I learn all of this on the fly- cool concept, but I really think the Wynn should have made this clear ahead of time to all the participants. I only picked up on it bc I read the instructions on the screen- sure, everyone needs to watch out for themselves, but premium service would be to let everyone know the condition set ahead of time. Strike 1.5 for the Wynn (I know I'm splitting hairs here).

I'll use my dad as an example- now knowing that he's going to need two hands to play (one to push the button, one to tap symbols), I need to reposition his chair for him to make that optimal. Each round we get moved to a new machine, which means I need to help get my dad to his new spot each time, and get him sitting in such a way that it makes it as easy as possible for him. He's not a favorite with this set up and his Parkinson's (requires speed and reaction time in addition to dumb luck). The good news is it really wasn't that hard to tap the symbols- they were clearly visible and stuck around for a long time. I doubt even my dad missed one.

So, round 1- unremarkable for me, 5th for my dad. OK, so he did ok despite the tapping requirement! Round 2- I take 5th, dad's round is garbage. Round 3...

Spoiler:
Mine is terrible. I figure I have zero shot at any prize. My dad... took 2nd!

They have a leaderboard which you could follow real time- I don't recall seeing my dad anywhere near the top until the very end. I also never saw that special symbol that vaults you to first- I bet my dad got that symbol near the end, and jumped up to first (then fell to second)! I find him and confirm- yep, he got that symbol. Awesome. So my dad's got a 2nd and a 5th- I figure, that's gotta be good for something. We head back to the Wynn to order food and play more. Looks like we need to get my dad's points above 30k, and mine are probably irrelevant (unless we bink something in the separate drawing).

Rolling Smoke

Upon the recs of some of you LVL'ers, I order us a bunch of BBQ. I got way too much food, mostly bc I didn't want to take the chance of underordering. I think I got two rack of baby back, 1/2 rack of beef ribs, chicken, and a bunch of sides. Assessment-

Spoiler:
MEH.

I gotta say, I was very underwhelmed. Disappointed actually. The flavor was just ok, and the beef ribs were pretty tough. Nothing especially interesting about any of the sides. I actually thought the collard greens were the best part of the whole meal. Maybe my taste in BBQ is different, but Rolling smoke was functional/marginal at best. I'd give the meat and sides a 4/10 with the exception of the greens, 6/10. Maybe we just got a bum order (the bellhop at the Wynn saw me pick up the food, asked me about it later, and was also surprised I thought so little of it) but I dunno... not gonna order from here again. Red Rock's place I think is far better.

After that disappointing lunch, I hang out with my kids for a bit while they watch a movie and I grab a nap. After, I meet up with my dad again for more play.

AND... the ice continues!

I swear, up to this point I feel like I'm just getting beaten. No 4 AWAK. Actually only one 4k prize at all, the royal I made earlier this AM. Only one 2000 hit from last night. ZERO combined hits with my dad. I think I was stuck almost 10k by mid afternoon. I try ordering another mule to numb the pain, but they don't have the ginger beer available on the floor. Damn, ok let's give the fabled greyhounds a try!

First greyhound- no help.

Second greyhound-

Spoiler:
NO HELP.

I head into dinner stuck over 10k and still only having hit 2 hand pays total. Things are not looking good at all.

Sinatra-

Dinner was great. We got the veal parm (me, always), sides of the truffle fettuccine (>100$ per appetizer portion! but, comped so why not), lasagna, scallops, sea bass. Everything was at least a 7/10, but the meal was made better by watching my kids who were very well-behaved. Dessert- I think we ordered one of everything on the menu, the affogato (mine) was the best to me. Obviously I'm a coffee addict but my kids ate more of mine than theirs so I suspect they agree.

After dinner- I put the kids to bed and desperately try and turn this trip around. I have a little under 5k left (brought 15k with me) and I still have all Sunday and most of Monday left. Trip-busto is a definite possibility. I know I stayed up later than intended, and finally hit a 4 aces w/kicker but only ended up that evening up 1k for the session, and stuck 10k overall. It's sad how much hope I'm pinning on my dad placing highly in the tournament (and us splitting the prize). Ugh.

Two random hits from my multiline play after this trip. I'm happy, of course, but WHERE ARE THE DEALT PREMIUM QUADS?!

Day 2 result- -4k
overall - 10k

Day 3 coming soon...
