A quote from Marcus Aurelius that has been very prominent in my life and thought process for some time now is "Memento Mori". Basically, "remember that you will die". Ultimately we're all dead and presumably have only one life to live. So from that standpoint, I want to make the most of whatever my time on this earth is.

Clearly, you can take a thought process like that way too far and ignore basic responsibilities, feeding the kids, etc. My wife and I take care of all of that and fortunately we have plenty leftover. So now the thought becomes- how shall I enjoy my life? Is it even "irresponsible" if I lose a bunch gambling, money that no doubt could go to "better" things, if I've already taken care of all the responsibilities out there? The answer I keep coming back to is "no". In some sense we all have long ago made this decision any time we splurge on a meal, lose even 5$ in Vegas, etc. The wrong way to think about it, IMO, is that certain expenditures are "responsible" and anything else is "irresponsible" in a binary way. It's not that simple. Is taking care of one's self and being happy "irresponsible"? I don't think so.

I know plenty of people that buy food in bulk and always go for the cheapest, typically most processed option. They spend far less than I do on food, but ingest far more unhealthy calories. Which is the more "responsible" choice? There's not a clear answer but I'm sure happy with the choices I'm making for my kids' and my own health.

On top of that, my former poker player self knows "it's all one long game". Who cares where I lose it, if I'm just going to eventually lose it anyways? The result is the same. So pretty much when I feel like going to the local, I go. The only thing holding me back is the finite bankroll (wish I had infinite money to lose but then I suppose it wouldn't be fun) and the knowledge that any loss at the local MAY limit my ability to play in Vegas. Actually one huge factor is knowing just how awful I can run in Vegas- I've pretty much established any trip I may go through a 15k swing. That's so big that I HAVE to save some of those 1k, 2k losses at the local- they add up and might matter.

So, basically I've curtailed my play at the local for the reasons above, but see no reason to stop entirely.
A 5 star post in a 5 star thread!

If it helps, at 1250 a spin, he had likely already lost more than that if he had been playing awhile.

At least it's relative. "All he did" was hit a royal. And as the article says, it's just a drop in his bucket.

Had he been dealt a royal for 1 million I'd be a little more annoyed

His VP addiction may have been the real reason for the macgregor fight

Read the article? It says he started with 20k.

Well that's what he said he started with. He could have had another 80k of coin in. Who hasn't lied about how much they lost while gambling?

It's not as good of a story if he hits $250,000 to break even. (a big score to get even is called a "Canoe").

If you're not going to believe the article, then don't believe he won anything at all.

If there's one thing we know is true, it's that we can count on the newsies to get it wrong. Either way, I'm telling myself he's stuck millions lifetime, makes me feel a little better

I read a different article that didn't mention the starting amount.

You really should consider posting less.

So you commented on an article OTHER than the one linked in the thread? You should consider not posting at all.

I wouldn't have to point this out to non-******s, but it was an article about the same incident.

You post in here umpteen times a day, and 95% of them are oldmanyellsatcloud garbage. Dementia is a *****, I guess.

It's certainly possible for part of the story to be true but not all of it.

Literally biding my time until the next trip... coming soon. Some much needed escape for the family, so we'll be seeing shows, hitting the arcades, The Orleans movie theater, etc... but obv there will be plenty of degen as well.

Had to share my latest binks from a trip to Vegas last week.
Luckily I didn’t actually get a picture of the cards.

2x royal flush on $1 spin poker

A couple greyhounds and enough drink tickets to kill a frat boy for some extra run food.

Managed to wrap up the night with a single aces + kicker on ddb.

My wallet was sore that night, and some 23 year old gave me and my friend a lecture about problem gambling when he saw all the unused drink tickets.

This was at the sportsbook bar, I didn’t plan to get too nutty, but after noticing their pay table got substantially better at $1 it just sort of happened.

We also had a good day playing the ponies.
