Do the Spin machines usually have a worse paytable to compensate?
The machines just have a set number of what they consider lines. Some have up to 20 "lines", which really stretches the definition of the word "line".
From a paytable perspective, not necessarily. The Wynn, for example, has a few full pay spin machines. The results are still mathematically independent from an odds/payout perspective. The main good/bad difference in spin is when you hit (as in these examples), you invariably hit several ways. By contrast, when you miss, you're missing "multiple times" simply by virtue of one card.
The easiest example of the latter I can give is when you're drawing to a 4 flush or 4 straight. Suppose you're playing 3 line, regular 'ol multiline poker. You get three independent draws, and could make 0, 1, 2 or 3 flushes on the redraw. Spin, you either make all 3 or miss all of them. Overall math ends up working out the same.
