Seriously... I've been VPing for many years and I can probably count on 2 hands the total number of people I've ever watched play who didn't make any mistakes in just a couple minutes of observing. Most people do the obvious stuff right (holding pairs, holding 4 to a flush, etc), but they have no clue of the holds beyond that.

I would just guesstimate that for a typical strip casino, a 99% theoretical return machine probably actually returns at _most_ like 90% overall. I would be genuinely shocked if it was above 90%.

Put yourselves in my shoes guys- I've taken my own father through the logic of certain plays, done some simple calculations, etc. And the response I'll get is often literally "but I've gotten a royal flush that way before!" or "but if I hold a kicker I have less of a chance of getting the 4th ace!".

Now multiply x 1000.

This man basically crushed business school, did well working for the man and then founded his own successful business. Still refuses to accept 100/10 is a bigger number than 1000/110 because "1000 is bigger", to use an analogy. WTF.

It's just weird. Some people just can't or don't want to learn, bottom line. With my dad it's definitely the latter. I suspect most of the VP donks out there are probably aware there's a best play, and also are aware they don't often know. They just don't care enough to learn.

My mom is similar but not in the same way - she understands there's a best play, and she tries her best to make the best play (when she can remember it), but she'll leave a 10/6 DDB machine because it 'isn't paying out' and go to a 9/5 DDB because it 'feels luckier'. Sigh.

Occasionally I'll get sucked into a poker strat convo and then realize a) the people I'm talking to don't have a clue how to play and b) I probably don't have a clue these days either.

Yeah, casino management is so greedy that they can't stand the thought of a tiny portion of their players are maximizing their play. So a double handful of players are winning at 99.6%. The idiots keep forgetting they are still beating all the players over time! Instead, they ratchet the odds down to the point they piss some of them off and they go somewhere else or they quit playing altogether.
