Government employment in the Las Vegas area grew from 90,000 in August to 95,400 in September. Much of that was attributed to the return of teachers to the classroom. Professional and business services employment in Las Vegas inched up to 99,700, a gain of 700 workers from August."

It's not total doom and gloom. Yeah construction jobs are down but that's no surprise considering the boom they went through. Too many relocated just for those types of jobs.

Hotel and casino only dropped 100 workers. Considering how huge an impact those areas are here, that's a incredibly small number.

At the same time there is an improvement in other areas. Small yes, but still an improvement.
yeah, private sector shrinks or stagnates while public sector increases. awesome recipe for future success...

Yes,the numbers of unemployed are still bad. But what makes you think the rest of the country is any better? Sure people are moving away from here - to what? They're delusional if they think they're going to easily score a job anywhere else.
well i could point out Texas, which is one of only like two states that's growing.

I could point out that I currently live in Texas and have been looking for a job for over a year now, and my best friend who has an undergrad AND a LAW degree and has taken the BAR, has been unable to find ANY job as well. So I will beg to differ, which is why I'm going back to school in Vegas as long as I get accepted, because school is the only thing to do right now and there is always work in Vegas... it's called poker

lets not forget about "under employment" where people have their hours drastically cut back but still show on the figures as having a job.

That's not what underemployment is. Underemployment is when you are working a job that you are under-qualified for in terms of pay and/or relevant skills.

Actually that is exactly what underemployed means. Nice try though.

Even sadder...

Nevada ranks dead-last in High School graduation rates. 51st out of 51 (including Washington DC). Only about 4 in 10 students graduate. In every other education metric, Nevada consistently ranks at or near the bottom.

Since there are few "thinking" jobs in Las Vegas, there is little or no motivation for kids to learn. Also, for the same reasons, there is little to no motivation for the state to teach.

Education

Wow. I know graduation rates across the country are embarrassing but 40% is just insane.

You will be stressed out if you come to Las Vegas.

Analysis: U.S. economic stress falling, but not in Nevada

Nevadans, who continued to see stress levels increase despite already being the most-stressed state in the country, according to The Associated Press' monthly analysis of economic conditions around the country.

Three Nevada counties were among the most-stressed counties in the country, with Clark County coming in at #6.

Lets see if we finish first in the rankings and play in the National Championship this season!

...the state’s demographer, estimates Nevada has 70,000 fewer residents since last year, including about 50,000 fewer in Clark County.

Las Vegas population in decline; will it reverse?

How do u mean? Surely most jobs must be working the hotels/casino/restaurants/stripclubs no? Or do u count them as bluecollar jobs?

That's more or less the definition of a blue collar job.

I would say this is blue collar. I work in an office but I am sure strippers make more than me.

I thought blue color meant manual labor type jobs, like plumbers, construction, electrician, janitor, etc... Never considered hotel jobs as blue color, unless your the maintenance guy.

Report: Las Vegas tops list of worst cities to find a job

It might come as no surprise, but if you’re in the market for a job, Las Vegas might not be your best bet.

On a day when the metro area's unemployment rate dropped to 14.1 percent in October from 15 percent, Las Vegas was ranked America’s worst city for finding a job, according to a Forbes.com report.

Las Vegas was the fastest growing city in the country for many years and thousands of people were moving there every month over an extended period of time. Most of them were able to find good employment with the exponential growth of the city. Now that the growth period is over, there are simply more people than positions and people will continue to leave the state until the proper critical mass is once again reached. It will take years for the market to stabilize as many houses, schools, etc. will reamin vacant and many of the commercial enterprises that were started to support the droves of people will no longer be able to make it. This is simple economics.

I live in Upstate New York which is part of the rust belt. We once had General Motors, General Electric, Chrysler, Carrier, and a host of other Fortune 500 companies. Virtually all of the employees were in unions and did well for themselves. Now, 95% of those jobs are gone but yet the cities remain. Las Vegas will also survive, but the free for all is over and may not return during our generation. Unfortuantely, the days of obtaining a high school diploma and living a middle class lifestyle are over for younger people in this country. It isn't just Las Vegas. So they have 15% unemployment and the rest of the country has 10-12%. Not really that much different.

The official "Don't come to Vegas looking for a job" thread should actually be updated to the "Don't come to the United States looking for a job" thread. And FWIW, I am not bitter as I have a 6very high paying job and I have been very fortunate in my career, but I bank money every paycheck knowing that tough times are likely ahead at some point. As someone who served in the USMC and is very patriotic, it just kills me that we have done this to oursleves.

It should actually be "Don't have a job? Get an education ya dummy!". Most of the unemployment rates we hear about are for the general population, which generally speaking, do not have college degrees. When you break out the numbers, high school grads make up a large number of the unemployed while the unemployment rate for people with college degrees is something in the range of 5-6% which is very close to the nominal unemployment rate.
