A friend who had a job offer as a graphic designer in SF said that you need a company that offers you a job and then the company needs to justify why a foreigner would do a better job than an American, hence I wouldnt bother trying.

Especially as an engineer, I would never go to the states. I dont know where you are from in Europe, but the US economy is service based and industry has been outsourced a lot over the last decades, while a lot of European economies are still very industrial based.

You can afford traveling to Vegas once a year easily. Especially while you are young. When you get older, you probably wouldnt wanna live in Vegas anyways.

Im not really in the industrial business.

More like an advise for the installations used in a building (airconditioning, sanitary, heating, etc)
Since every project in LV needs those installations, i feel like there is lots of business in LV.

Im from Amsterdam (area). 23 y o, nd was in Vegas in june.. Goin back in sept tho (2-26)

Not saying i wanna live there for the rest of my life. Maybe a few years. I was just curious about working in Las Vegas and what the chances are i can find a job over there.

My fiance found a job as a Medical Assistant for $16hr in less then 2 weeks after moving back to Vegas, and I have my choice of several sales manager jobs in the car biz (just enjoying playing poker before going back to work). There are jobs in Vegas as long as your not an uneducated lazy ass.

Okay, so ignoring the MA comment he made, cars are a BS product? Seems like a high bar.

I see nothing wrong with your basic plan. You're young and looking to do something "different" for a while. Works for me.

But it's going to be very hard. Yes, there are engineering firms in Vegas. Some you won't be able to get a job because they mostly support Nellis AFB and the Nevada Security Site and non-citizens need not apply. Those that do straight commercial stuff are not getting much business lately.

Construction in Vegas has been decimated. They overbuilt just about everything and once real estate collapsed they've been left with a glut of houses and commercial property. Driving around Vegas you'll see store front after store front that's empty. And all the big construction on the strip is done. City Center is done, save for tearing down The Harmon before it collapses in an earthquake. Echelon is rusting in place. Fontainebleau is likely to be sold off as scrap iron. Every other major construction plan was canceled.

So now there about 100,000 unemployed construction people in Vegas. And you want to come join them.

You can try. No harm in trying. But don't get your hopes up.

And they also have to advertise the job first. If ANY qualified Americans apply for the job, bad luck for the foreigner.

There are still some engineering shortages here, because engineering is so specialized, but I don't know if HVAC is one of them. But honestly, we've had a tidal wave of cheap Chinese and Indian engineers in the last decade.

There is about a million engineering jobs in the usa and only 200 thousand qualified people. It shouldnt be hard to find a job in vegas with your credentials.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm not gonna get my hopes up, cause I know it's gonna be hard to find a job (mission impossible)

I'll just go in september trying to crush whatever poker action is left after the summer and I'll bring my resume just in case

Just keep in mind that if you come out and hope to interview with anyone, they won't even talk to you unless you got the proper visa that allows you to work in the U.S.

I suspect it's getting decidedly easier to get a gig out here but don't know for sure. Business in town has slowly but surely been improving for the last few years now.

It's definitely easier than a few years ago and easier than last year but that can be said about many places in the US. I still feel Vegas is behind lots of places in the US in terms of employment opportunities

So do I have a chance to move to Vegas and get a job as a Cirque du Soleil performer or not? I can swim pretty well so “O” is an option.

There a dozens of software engineer/developer jobs in Las Vegas too. But then again that field is like free pass; you can work at most developed places. Some of those jobs require a gaming license though.

With those skills you can also aim to make your own software but you'll need a healthy liferoll to sustain yourself while your product/service picks up. You can also work as a consultant or contractor. And if you decide to work for yourself and doesn't work out, there are dozens of options to apply to. There's also the option to become a semi-pro poker player while you work on your own software (or apply for jobs).

I never thought of this until now, but vegas is a funny place when it comes to street performers.

they don't really exist.

now don't get me wrong - there are literally dozens of people out on the street on the strip and downtown trying to earn money.

about 25% of these are literal bums in full costume, posing for pictures for tips. many look-a-likes and impersonators. you have the showgirls & the girls in pasties. but performers?

less than 5% of the people on the street hustling in vegas have real talent.

the reason?

despite being a city based completely on entertainment, the local arts scene in las vegas is basically non-existent.

people don't come to las vegas to "make it" as an artist or musician - once you're here, you've already made it.

las vegas does not cultivate and grow talent, they import it. if you're an aspiring magician in las vegas, you have to leave town to get a gig!

so to answer your question, the tips for street performers are not great. but they haven't seen anything good. the audience is unlimited - if you're entertaining, you'll make money.
