In perhaps the most under-the-radar casino theft, a Stardust sports book cashier simply walked out the door of the now-demolished casino in September 1992 with an estimated $500,000 worth of cash and chips. The suspect, William John Brennan, has not been seen since.

At the time, it was considered the largest casino theft — classified as an unlawful taking of goods or money without the use of violence or threats.

Stardust employees described Brennan, then 34, as a clean-cut guy originally from Pennsylvania who kept to himself. Several days after the theft, a warrant was issued for Brennan’s arrest, charging him with a dozen counts of felony theft.

Wonder what Brennan did with the chips. And if he changed his name in case of the possibility of a future traffic stop.

I'm also amazed that it seems so easy, hopefully it doesn't encourage (more) copycats. While I agree it's better to not confront these apparently armed guys in crowded spaces, it seems weird that Metro can't be informed and on their tail outside withing seconds.

There aren’t going to be that many cops around. He could literally leave the cashier and be outside and ready to leave in a cab in seconds before the police or even casino security realize what’s going on. I am not surprised he was able to leave so easily.

My local supermarket would be harder to leave with a loaf of bread.

Also a lot of those security guys are really obese. Some people will easily be able to run from them.

This can't be 100% fool-proof. Although I think shooting the guy, which would probably be allowed by the police if they are in front of the suspect wouldn't be wise. The casino would have to close for an extended period of time. The loss from that would outweigh the gain from recovery of the loot.

If this continues unabated, changes will have to made. Dye-pack?

I don't see this becoming a huge issue for patrons. Worst case the casinos just place some cops near cages in the future.

Some of the Security at Ballys wears high performance body armor and guns. They probably have the go ahead to blast robbers. Maybe that's why only MGM places are getting robbed.
