FINALLY... right down the street from my home, station casinos is going to move forward with a new Casino facility. Station has owned the property for years.

It BETTER have a poker room...

NEW Station Casino
Clark County, Nevada

Plans finally moved forward today for a Casino/Resort near 215 and Durango in Southwest Las #Vegas. The #ClarkCounty Commission approved designs and proposals at their zoning meeting for the land owned by Station Casinos. The vision is to build out the property in two phases which would eventually create a resort with more than 450 rooms, more than 90,000 square foot casino along with other amenities.

Station Casinos has owned the land for years but the economic environment and market conditions prevented the gaming company from asking for construction approvals until now.

I vaguely remember a long time ago - probably before the 2008 crash - a sign somewhere near there that said "Coming Soon - Station Casino". I thought they had just abandoned the idea.

Are the current station casinos even worth going into. I've seen the rake on those things and it looks terrible and highest they have is like $1/2?

Sometimes terrible play by the regs can overcome terrible rake.

Besides, the rake isn't that bad at $4 + $2.

Nice. Saw a blurb about this a couple weeks ago, glad to see they're finally moving on it.

When I lived over there I always felt it was odd that I was living as far away from a casino as possible in Vegas or Henderson. This definitely makes a ton of sense. I don’t know if the poker room is worth it, but red rock has a great lineup of restaurants and we rent a cabana once every few weeks.

I want the big games to move from rr to this new property. We all ready have enough low stakes with Orleans and south point.

Although southwest Vegas has been curiously casino-light for a while, with GVR and Sunset having eliminated their poker rooms I kinda doubt they'll open one at Durango. Seems like it would just cannibalize the one at Red Rock.

I have a hunch Durango is going to be a Red-Rock-light, not the newest and biggest thing. Given how much larger the plot is at Red Rock than Durango that seems to make sense to me.

Also is it practical to open a poker room for just higher-limit games and not have the lower limit ones? I'm guessing you need the volume to smooth out the schedules for the employees.

It may also take a while to get built. Global supply chains are f----d right now and I wouldn't be surprised if it takes an extra year just to get all the materials.

Pre covid I would have loved to see a Stations casino there but now that they have closed a bunch of the poker rooms and no longer do buffets, I don't really care. Unless they put a poker room there, I will check it out once when I visit IKEA the next time and that's it.

I also find it odd that Stations would build a new casino from scratch after closing several of their current casinos. I'm guessing it is a real estate play. Maybe they will build it and then sell the property and just "manage" it like MGM did with some of their properties?

Also, Stations recently started objecting to some construction work down by where the Raiser's stadium is because they own a parcel of land there and the proposed construction would mess with the entrances to their potential casino there. I only say this because they seem to own a lot of property in town with dreams of building casinos there but currently they are sitting on a few shuttered casinos already. I know location is king but they like to call dibs on a bunch of stuff and never really use it, it seems like.

Orleans and South Point have been running some bigger games lately. Especially South Point, and the games should last there. I’m not as confident Orleans will continue to have 2-5 after the WSOP.

I suspect GVR not having a poker room has helped the South Point poker room as South Point is no longer just a room with 1-2 NL and 2-4 or 3-6 limit poker.

It will probably just be the same level of competition with higher rake.

If they run some bbj or high hand type promotions they might have some looser play though, so yeah $4+$2 might be okay if that’s the case (if they offer big enough prize money). If they just run freerolls though they could just attract nits.

I doubt they succeed with anything above 1-2 NL or 3-6 limit though.

Which ones offer poker, other than Boulder ?

Green Valley Ranch and Sunset closed poker, right ?

(I was not aware that SouthPoint was a Stations property ...)

Poker aside, which is sacreligous in this forum, I know .... Stations is a very well run locals casino network, worth going to for non-poker gambling and an assortment of eating options.

Apropos nothing, but the thread brought back fond memories of when the Fiesta Henderson used to be The Reserve, an African Safari themed casino hotel. The buffet was fantastic, and their Unlimited T-bone night on Wednesday's was the main reason why my wife and I became fat and clogged our arteries. The Reserve was where we ate, and the Sunset Station, with it's psychedelic stained glass ceiling lights and decorations was where we played. [We lived in Vegas 1999-2003]

Sunset was Gaudi-inspired,it is supposed to be Spanish.

The Reserve was truly weirdly themed when it opened, the whole "Congo Jack" crap was a really stupid non-gaming theme.

"The Reserve is built around an Indiana Jones-type Hollywood story line in which fictional character Congo Jack crash-lands his plane in an African setting."

https://lasvegassun.com/news/1998/fe...y-night-in-he/

Come to think of it, character-themed casinos basically faded away. No more Rio Rita, TI Pirates, Excalibur Merlin, not even an MGM Lion/Wizard of Oz entrance. Jamie Foxx standing in a fountain pushing sportsbets is a throwback.

As The Reserve was winding down, they held an auction for many of the decorations and furniture. I lived in Sierra Vista Ranchos at that time, and one of the community members bought a couple of the full-size zebras for their backyard. I believe I have a couple of their card decks somewhere in garage.

Now I am getting a craving for a T-bone steak!

bump...this place sucks. Worst Stations casino ever built. I would rather hang out at the Palace Station than here. Red Rock 4LYFE!

Complaints:

1. horrible, congested (also see 5.) layout in every imaginable fashion (parking garage, food court, sports book, actually pretty much everywhere, etc.)
2. cold, unimaginative decor. All white fake marble. Didn't Stations get the message this style went out with Pure Nightclub?
3. Bathrooms: the one bathroom I managed to get in (down by the Summer House restaurant) had no paper towel dispensers or hand dryers. Good thing I was wearing sweats to dry off my hands...the other bathrooms had a line of guys (yes) outside the entrance.
4. Accessibility: The Red Rock is just off the 215 and is easy to get into including all parking garages. The Durango Station is just off of the 215 and literally the complete opposite unless you get off on the Roy Horn Frontage Road on the 215 headed south.
5. Congested is the key...if I had come on a weekday 2 years from now maybe my opinion would change.

Seems like this place is trying to emulate a Strip casino. No thanks.

not joking - to get out of the parking garage, I had to go in reverse for about 100 yards down a long stretch to be able to find a place to turn around. I had a trail of vehicles bearing down on me, the first being a truck. Can't find this entire sequence on meme, but this was basically me backing up to get out of the parking garage (a few of you will get this):

You've lived here long enough....Have you ever been to the Aliante Casino? It was originally built by Station Casinos but sold off at some point in the early 2010's. It is spacious, nice and has a lot of (un-congested) excellent dining & drinking options. This place never gets mentioned on 2+2. But, if I lived near there, I would hang out there regularly. Not sure how the Stations casinos builders turned so terrible.

OTOH Graton in NorCal is pretty nice, and has a nice big poker room.

I thought it looked okay. It looked like one big casino with a nice food court. But unless I live nearby, why would I choose Durango over other casinos? Because they have slot machines? I can find those all over Vegas.

Throw in a good buffet and at least it will have something more unique and different. I’m actually okay with no poker room because I don’t want it taking away business from South Point, Orleans and Red Rock poker rooms. But that also gives me another reason not to go there.

Fontainebleau, Durango, Resorts World, Aria etc. are all doing food courts. I like food courts, and I knew casinos prefer them over buffets, but they aren’t something to get excited about.

This place looks like something that people say casinos should be doing. Just have a bunch of slot machines and not much else.

There are few slot whales though. Degenerates and whales often think they can control the outcome. By counting, dice setting, whatever. Slots won't appeal to them, except for maybe vp.

I doubt many new upscale casino developments will offer buffets. Food courts kinda serve the same audience and are just way more efficient.

I'd like to see the demographic breakdown on a place like Durango. Would they even attract whales if they offered stuff for them? I just don't see any reason for tourists to leave the Strip for gambling purposes if money isn't an objective.

If you go there at 11AM on a Wednesday don't they have the same kind of customer your local hometown casino has at that time of day?
