In town for my buddy's birthday, I drove in Wednesday night. Because of less than great planning on my part, and the disease of road work that seems to have infected every town between my home and Vegas, I arrived at 4 am. It was easy to get a cheap room at my usual CET spots for most of the nights, but apparently conventions killed availability on Wednesday. I figured I should live it up a little, so I checked the high dollar spots. Yikes, 400 to 500 bucks for one night. More like half a night in my case. Then I remembered that back when there was a big upsurge in prices in the early 2000's, I stayed using poker rates at Bellagio, Venetian, and Wynn a lot. Wynn still has a poker rate for $139 with a 6 hour play requirement iirc. Ouch, the way I've been playing and running recently that could cost me a lot more than what I'm saving. Aha, but Wynn allows a tournament entry to satisfy the requirement for 1 day. I would play the $200 daily, making my total cost for the room $339, a much better deal than the going $500 price. I was freerolling the tournament and could just reg and leave my chips to be blinded off and still gotten a good deal.
But I wanted to play because Vegas is the only time I can play. The closest poker to my home is 90 minutes away and that room blows. Long story short on the tournament, 90 runners, I made the money plus 1 pay jump, and cashed for $395. I could also have played the $160 turbo, which frankly fits my style better. Play bad and get lucky a couple times. It also wouldn't burn up 7 hours like the daily did. This deal looks good for my future trips, with the bonus that Wynncore is filled with so many of the beautiful people, in very sharp contrast with the ghetto skanks that permeate CET joints.
