I'd be interested in some more detail on this as well. I never lock my car or house doors, and for the past 10 years I just leave the keys in the car so I don't have to remember where I put them. The only problems I've had are when someone else locks the door >.< So if you need to use my car just check the center console, cup hold, door pocket, or the glove compartment if I'm really feeling paranoid.

This includes about a dozen different vehicles, currently 3, ranging from new to maybe 15 years old.

It's my car. The dumb thing should open the door for me and start up on its own. Why would I want to mess with a stupid key that's not going to prevent someone from taking it if they want anyway?

No, they're just as likely to rob you. The people are just more spread out so criminals and opportunities meet less often.

Park your unlocked car in New York City with a dash cam and you'll watch hundreds of people walk by it in an hour. If one in 10,000 people is a thief, you'll get robbed in a week. Park the same car in some rural area and you'll see single digits of people walk by it in a day. If 1 in 10,000 is a thief, you can go for decades and still be fine.

such a naive world view

but judging by your post count you dont get out much, if at all

by your reasoning the percentage of people in compton who are willing to rob you when the opportunity arises is equal to that of the average town 200 miles removed from a large city

lol

Reasoning? No, it's a fact, found by a simple Google search.

Newsflash: people who don't have nice **** aren't victims of property crime. The highest rate of property crime is in the suburbs. Urban and rural are probably within 20-30% of each other depending aon what year you look at.

If you deleted every post I've made that makes a point that is this easily Googleable, I'd have a much lower post count. Someone should just give me a LMGTFY undertitle.

this is only 1/3 of it

also neighbors and passersby are more likely to get involved or at a min call the police because everyone knows everyone and who looks out of place.

also the likely-hood of a criminal getting shot in a rural area is much higher

No story is complete without an ending. Today I got a call from the LVPD saying they recovered my vehicle and can pick it up at the tow yard. Over two months later and it's now back in my possession. Of course they tried to steal the stereo. The unit is still in place in the car along with the face plate, but they jacked up the area all around it trying to pry it out. And they stole the battery out of the car, so I had to get it towed to a place to take a look at it to make sure they didnt steal any other parts from the engine. Turns out the starter wasnt working either so my guess is they abandoned it because they couldnt start the vehicle. So it is now in working condition,at least I think it is. Taking it back to the shop after I put 50 miles on it as the guy at the shop said I wouldnt pass emissions until I did that due to some computer thing and he would make sure it would pass emissions before I actually got it tested. Which out of all this was the coolest thing he was a really nice guy very helpful.

Now the negatives....my a/c doesnt work. Found that out AFTER I got a new battery and starter. Another negative, they took my plate. For some odd reason they didnt take the other plate that was located inside the car. But I had de-registered the car anyway so it was really no matter to me.

I called both LVPD and NLVPD (they found the vehicle) to see if anyone processed the car for prints. From the answers I got, it doesnt sound like they did or are not interested in doing that.

So on the one hand it's great that I have my car back but on the other hand it sucks because of the multiple towing fees and storage, along with what I already spent to get the car running again. Not to mention I'm going to have to have the a/c looked at sometime in the near future.

This is not CSI. Nobody cares about a stolen car.

We had a car stolen last weekend, filed the report over the phone and when we asked if somebody would come to take a look at the “crime scene” were told they are usually too busy for stuff like that. Wednesday night they called to tell us they found the car somewhere in the hood and had it towed to a city tow lot. My wife asked if they arrested any suspects and they told her that’s not going to happen. Also couldn’t say what condition the car is in. Case closed, don’t bother us again.

Good news: towing fee is only $120 if you reported the vehicle stolen and the first 4 days of storage are free.

Every time I turn around, I'm getting screwed. I got charged $265.50 for the towing PLUS another hundo to get towed to the shop. Stupid me didnt know there were different rates my mistake....towing company knew it got stolen and i reported it BECAUSE I TOLD THEM. Thank GOD I picked it up by 11AM, otherwise they were gonna charge me for the first days storage. Just so tired of this type of BS.....

Get AAA. Even if you only use it maybe once every 3 or 4 years, it's worth it.

Or Roadside assistance from your cellular carrier. I have Verizon which gives you 75miles of towing per incident for $3/month and if you have multiple lines, anyone on your account can use it. All major us carriers even Metro PCS, cricket and other prepaid carriers have this. It's been a godsend when I've had to use it.

We didn’t pick up ours yet, but the note we got says:
Quote:
Recovery Condition: [ ] driveable / [x] Not Driveable*

*Explanation: Ignition popped.
Sad side note: they broke a window to get in instead of just opening the unlocked trunk of the van.

When my wife called the tow lot they told her she could pick up personal belongings from the car if we decided to leave it there because it’s not worth the money to recover it. Does anyone know if we would be allowed to remove the tires? We paid $500 for them 6 month ago. That might be the most valuable item in the car besides the BOB running stroller that might or might not still be in there.

Had a bob stroller, but I heard there is one where it folds up on its own with a button that is more baller.

I didn’t listen to everyone telling me BOB are the only strollers for serious running and got a cheap one instead. Couple months later I realized my mistake and got one.

So apparently I made the right life decision by not being a runner, since it saved money come stroller-time. Well played by me.

Because you avoided that expense you probably own a car that would be worth enough to pay tow charges on to recover from impound.

You can save more by teaching your kid to walk early too, never too soon to start that door to door solicitation for donations to whatever cause pays the most.
