Damn I'm getting old. I can remember the wife & I staying there right after it opened. 1st night we were hanging in the race & sports book and she put in a $5 exacta on 2 trotters that she researched by picking the best horses name and a driver who had the same name as her cousin. Photo finish and she hit for $200+. She bought dinner that night at CPK which was adjacent to the book. Every trip to Vegas we'd try to stop there for at least a couple of hours.

Are they remodeling it or imploding it?

Very sad to hear it close. I played one of my most insane sessions over at the Mirage when they still had poker. There was this absolutely batshit crazy old guy who was drunk as hell and seemed to have infinite amounts of money. It was the easiest money I had ever made, all you had to do was to get ANY pair and he would open jam the flop with any two cards.

'Smartly' closing July 27th (or 14th?) .. after the WSOP has wound down.

Reopening 2027 .. volcano removal .. somehow gotta get a 600' plus guitar built on property, which appears to sit perpendicular to the strip and not sure how it ties into the current tripod layout. (Probably won't sit too well with TI guests whose view will now be limited and undoubtedly have to deal with intense flash-filled lighting.) GL

Damn, seems like yesterday I was there trying to satisfy my poker obsession which was just limit poker and some 7 card stud at that time. I spent a ridiculous amount of hours there playing poker and loved every minute of it.

I was playing there when they tore down The Sands across the street which was about the only time people stopped playing but only for just a couple of minutes white it imploded and then back to the grind.

In the mid-nineties you'd see Matusow, Negreanu, Karina Jett, et al roaming the place nonstop, crazy how time flies

Loved the California Pizza Kitchen and the huge sports book and the smell of coconuts (or whatever that smell was) pumped in the air

RIP

They used to run sit-n-gos in there, really liked those. Then later on the LHE.

I've never seen the volcano kick off in person, only from the middle. I don't have the patience to wait for it.

When I was a newb a mutual friend introduced me to Sklansky, Malmuth and the Brunsons. Mirage was their room of choice until the Bellagio opened. Todd Brunson and Jenifer Harmon would let me sit behind them and watch their play at 200-400 and higher. It was my home for 10-20 and 20-40 for quite a while.

Played a couple $100 SnGs with Jerry Buss in the game. He was tough even in low limits.

In the early '90s I was playing during the CES Convention and Bill Gates sat in a $3-6 limit game. Got on the list for that table but nobody budged while he was there.

I used to love 20-40 hold em in the early 2000s there. Great atmosphere and huge pots in their elevated “top” section. Cool place and vibe. Oh well. All good things…

One lasting memory of the Mirage was when the Sportsbook put the OJ freeway chase live on their the large monitors. Happened to be there, eating at California Pizza, and watched it.

My other memory that stands out was the time my wife and I, with our then-3-year-old, flew up from Costa Rica, checked in, and spent our December holiday in a suite, complete with a Christmas tree and lights, presents.

Finally, I got to play low limit PLO against T.J. Cloutier.

I wonder if they are going to be closed just long enough to be able to lay off all the union employees.

They're planning to be closed about three years is what was reported above. Certainly seems like longer than just for that purpose.

I heard that many employees are getting $2k/year of service as severance, not sure whether that's union or non-union. Also that there are specific job fairs as well as other transition services being offered. It doesn't sound like the employees are being totally shafted.

I don't even think 'overhaul' is appropriate, much less remodeling. Three years to complete everything they want to do, including building a 600+ foot tall oddly shaped hotel and expand seating in the theater seems pretty standard. To do all this without really disturbing The Strip and keeping contractors scheduled without too much overlap is a huge undertaking.

But they probably have building plans for the hotel already in hand since that's their standard building layout.

Trivia .. 60 minutes did a report on a man who had designed 'a lot' of buildings and bridges .. never visited any of them. Was part of the management team from afar. GL

Why do you say it is their standard layout. AFAIK the count of such hotels st@nds at one currently. Heck that one is only one of three hotels in Hollywood FL much less standard across their total population of hotels.
