I don't think it's unreasonable to charge for parking.

Yeah, but in New Orleans people would park in the lot if it were free, and go do other things? But how many people park in a free Las Vegas lot on the strip to do something else other than go to a casino? There's nothing in walking distance of most of them except other casinos.

Remember that if the article is to be believed, this is part of their Profit Growth Initiative. They're not looking to pick up an extra few thousand on fight night. So it seems unlikely that it involves a validation scheme.

As an L.A. person who has been driving in multiple times a year but has reduced the number of total yearly visits year over year due to increases in prices/fees and a reduction in comps and deals, it will only further reduce my number of total trips a year to Vegas. I've sighed and attributed to the changing of the times and just try to not rue the fact I turned 21 in Nov 2007 basically near the end of anything Awesome or super cheap about Vegas.

So instead of 6-10 trips a year it's going to be closer to 2-3 ~5 night trips a year or even 1-2 big trips a year as the fees and prices continue to increase in Vegas :/

Further tips the scale for visitors/tourists in favor of using Uber & Taxis (which will slowly skew towards being solely Uber) rather than rental cars. It's essentially a tax to rental car users and visitors within a driveable radius, which at above a certain level will make ridesharing or taxis the more cost-effective option. I don't know what that level is, but I'm sure the local gov't will weigh in on it when if/when rental income drops, because as mentioned above, the parking fees will just replace other tourist disposable-income-based expenses.

And to think, one of the things visitors to LV previously had to look forward to was lower rates for car rentals relative to other metro areas...

Any thoughts on what MGM does with valet charge?

I highly doubt MGM will charge for parking for anything other than big events, New Years, etc.

Charging for parking has been been discussed but it's obviously a terrible idea.

I wonder if the stadium will charge for parking? I can see that as a possible trojan horse into getting people OK with the idea of paying to park in garages along the strip...

I guess that begs the question: Does the stadium have its own dedicated garages/lots?

how is it that downtown casinos charge for parking and strip casinos don't? when downtown started charging, why didn't the strip follow?

nope, no new parking. Event goers will need to use NYNY, Monte Carlo, etc., hence the problem/opportunity.

Because everything is crammed together. Casino A doesn't want people parking in their lot/garage and going to casino B. Their lot/garage then fills up with people not in their casino and nowhere to park for people that want to gamble in casino A. It's not a revenue generator because you can get validated for free parking. MGM's parking plan (allegedly) is part of their Profit Growth Initiative, so it's all about bringing in more money.

In every downtown you have to pay for parking, because there is other stuff nearby. You can park free with validation when gambling though.

Murren also noted that the arena is being built without "one penny of taxpayer dollars."

"So I'm not really sympathetic to somebody that says 'I want everything free' when we're the ones spending the capital to build the amenities that are to the benefit of the tourists and the locals," he said.
Wow. I didn't realize that when I go into a casino, the food is all free, the poker rooms have no rake, I won't lose in the pit or on the machines, I won't have to pay for rooms or shows, etc. I didn't realize that wanting free parking means that someone is also asking for all that other stuff to be free.

Also, an arena is of absolutely no benefit to me, and even if some people enjoy it being there, I'm 100% sure MGM is building it with only their own interests in mind.

Good job defending against an argument no one is making.

I just realized that they are planning to make people park in existing lots (and maybe pay for the prvilege) and then walk to the arena. Most tourists don't generally like to walk far, taking taxis lots of places I would easily walk, and locals like close parking so much that poker rooms live and die by how close they are to parking. I can't imagine that arena customers will be happy with walking from a casino, especially if they have to pay.

I never cared for the arena either. In fact I thought it could be an annoyance because it could make traffic and parking worse.

The arena couldn't possibly be any closer to the NYNY and Monte Carlo parking garages. And it's not like at any arena in America one can just park right in front.

Yea try parking at Staples Center/L.A. Live its 20-25 on game night to park within 1/4 mile of the arena unless you have premium parking pass then you basically park in the convention center parking next to the west entrance/players entrance.

5-10 parking is a good half mile + hike and while that part of downtown LA has been cleaned up and lit up (good lightning) quite a bit this decade for the first 10 years of Staples being open you had to walk through some fairly unsavory streets to and from the arena.

The MGM arena parking situation will be a dream in comparison.

Candlestick in SF had parking right in front and surrounding the stadium. The San Jose arena has parking right in front of it, but it's not enough for everyone that attends, so you have to be early/pay extra to get in that lot.

Which I've done! And then you go through the side entrance that goes straight to the suites. Staples is really good at separating the swells from the plebs.
