Day 3

Day 3 ceremoniously starts with a scenic breakfast at Charlie Frias Park with 2+2 mainstay daryn. I feel honored to be his first social contact since COVID, as he’s been mindful of avoiding all the COVID hotspots (all dining establishments sans takeout, gym, casinos, movie theater). Totally get it as someone who has a family. We discuss the world as we know it, and I admit that I don’t think too deeply about the concept of free will (though I certainly don’t believe in determinism). We try to relive the glory of our previous year’s breakfast from Blueberry Hill, but I find diner food in pure takeout form to be missing all the charm (and temperature) it’s known for otherwise. After he departs, I immediately have to hop on a scheduling call with 9 other administrators for a large, senior-level recurring committee meeting. My executive is the most junior on the meeting, and I could most likely have skipped the call without much consequence. But I don’t, and it goes on for a painful 45 minutes. Such pain is not because of the unideal use of time, but the fact that I’m outside in 100-degree heat with a now-empty water bottle, sans sunscreen, and no data! I escape the call and the heat, dehydrated of fluids and sanity, in a Lyft back to the room.

After finishing up the remote work day, I try to see what the wait is for Hash House A-Go-Go, but am put on short holds, then hung up on 3 separate times in the span of 10 minutes. My Karening intensifies as I march down to Linq, inform the host that I’m fed up with that situation and how they won’t be getting my cholesterol-ridden hangry business, and I’ll see them on the 1-star Yelp train. He scoffs and says “good luck” as I fatly march to Off The Strip. I grab a quick steak and avocado bowl (and ruin all health benefits from it with a delicious half-priced Ocean Breeze)

Pricy but better than anything I'd ever make

#VacationDrinks

Remember when O'Shea's used to be a thing, and fun?

I decide I’m going to use my “really nice meal” one-time and grab a steak at Delmonico Steakhouse before playing the $125 Superstack at Venetian later that night. But first, let’s put that garbage resort fee to use and pump some iron!

I have delusions of grandeur that Harrah’s gym will be superior to the motel gym in my apartment building (though let’s be real, gym in your apt building is a brag, so). Alas, I find that there are just as many active dumbbells in Harrah’s as there are shows in Vegas!

Can't even lift, bro

Change your resort fees for this joke of a gym and I'll change my 2-star Yelp Review, you hygiene-theater nimrods

They also tape off half the machines and remove all plates for social distancing purposes. You’ve got to be ****ing kidding me. I spite-grab 6 mini-waters on the way out while the front desk is occupied with something else.

Upon arrival at Delmonicos (which by the way, has zero signage on how to get there, yet I see Smith & Wollensky directionals all over the place), I’m the first customer in the door and only one for the first 20 minutes there. I enjoy a lobster bisque fit for my undeserved Boston seafood snobbery tastes, a glass of my favorite whisky (Dalmore Cigar Malt), and a Prime Bone-In Ribeye. My God, I’m meat-drunk. (pics of all the food). Why did I sign up for this tournament instead of enjoying this for a few hours then playing cash?!

I arrive in the middle of the 2nd blind level, with nothing notable happening for a bit. There’s an older woman 2 to my left that has trouble grasping how blinds work (dealer and other players having to physically help her put the correct chips in the pot), yet people decide to stack off with QQ against her anyway when she 3-bets an UTG open to 20bb in the SB, then jams 3x pot on a Kxx flop with obvious AA. At 200/400/400, Button MAWG who seems more aggro than your usual $125 MTT player opens for 1000, I 3! to 3300 with 66 and get flatted. Flop T45, I bet 2800, he calls. Turn T, I check, he thinks and bets 2000, I call. River 4, I check, he 3000 and I think there’s enough missed heart draws in there to make up for AT-T9 and I guess 44/55, so I call. He turns over black QJ and MHIG. I probably play bad. At 400/800/800, Button limps, same Villain jams 10k in SB, I snap with AJ, Button folds and I river him to hold against his A5 on a KK859.

500/1000/1000, I open 2600 with JJ OTB, BB who seems like a Raymer-Ripoff/straightforward nitball flats. Flop QT6, BB checks and I check back for pot control, though I’m questioning that decision. Turn 8, BB checks, I 2200, he calls. River A, he double-checks his cards and fires 6000, leaning forward. I have blockers, but don’t love the idea of bluff-raising this river and hoping he folds Aces-up or better.

I slowly chip up and win some flips to enter the 8-handed FT 2/8 with ~130k at 1500/3000/3000 with 5 spots paying. 7-handed, and OMC mins to 6k UTG. 1 fold, and I 3! To 16k with QQ, folds back to him and he calls. 39.5k in the pot, flop is 974 and he checks. He has 45k left, so not great, but jamming seems like only reasonable option. Naturally, he snaps and turns over A6, so there that goes. Now the table SS, same old woman from before who is clueless (she claimed she had 20k in tourney chips stolen from her while at another table, pointing to a table that’s been a cash game the entire time), limps UTG, I see A7 and (mentally reluctantly) jam for 56k, get snapped by a nit woman with AK, and can’t rally after the board runs out A5539. I feel like I should’ve isolated to 9k and folded to a 3b in retrospect, but did feel open-folding or limping behind were not options.

As I trudge back to Harrah’s past Casino Royale, I have my arm grabbed by a seemingly mid 20’s, Tatyana Ali (Ashley Banks from Fresh Prince)-lookalike. I have a feeling where this is going but entertain the diversion. She’s here on a girls-trip with friends (yet was walking alone?), staying at the Plaza (woof), yada yada yada (not the best part, but I did mention the bisque earlier)

When you're staying at the Plaza but looking to visit The D, nomsayin?

She asks where I’m from (Boston), and impressively says she used to live in Allston and rattles off some actual places. Asks what I do (I work at a pediatric hospital), and starts going on about her kid getting treatment there for a rare immune disease. In my mind, I’d like to give her credit for some sort of incredible, IBM Watson-levels of hustle here, and assume she has similar details she can churn out no matter where a potential mark says they’re from and what they do for work. Anyway, the secret code phrase of “up for having some fun” comes out, and I wish her well as I say I’ve had a long day and am turning in. I am a donk of a male in many a way,, but it’s a pandemic, people. That and I always assume something like that plays out that she excuses herself to use the bathroom, sends a text, I receive a knock on the door from a very large gentleman brandishing some sort of weapon, demanding he’s either going to leave with all the cash I have, or all the organs inside my body.

LOL on the hooker story, yes you definitely wake up in a bathtub full of ice missing a kidney if you go down that road

Day 4

Another day waking up to all my organs and most of my money intact! A nondescript half-day of work and some meals eventually gets me to Flamingo for some 5-handed ½ action. There’s only 2 NL tables going, and I get sat at one with 2 guys nursing $75 stacks (one playing WSOP.com on an iPad) and one competent looking guy with ~$600 in front and why am I here again?

UTG (MAWG? Forget anything interesting about him) limps, Button limp, Ivan iPad completes SB and I check J3in BB. Flop comes J36, iPad donks 6, I raise to 16, UTG cold-calls, SB folds. Turn 5, I 35, UTG jams for his last $100 total, I call, he shows AJdd and river is 3 to fill me up buttercup.

He’s replaced by who I’ll call Military Manny (Flew in the air force, son going to USC on a sports scholarship, Cowboys fan?). I take myself right into his danger zone when I open AA OTB to 7, and he comes along in the SB along with the BB. Flop K79, checks to me, I 14, MM raises to 45, BB folds, I jam for his $120 stack and he snaps with...K7 Board runs out J3, and I’m blaming this one Lost Wages Pun Pilot.

In 5 consecutive hands in which I open (not 5 straight hands), I get called by Freddy Fauxhawk (2 to my right) when I’m IP, and promptly get donked into for half-pot or more on every flop, and can’t even flop a backdoor draw and an over on any of them. On occurrence #6, I opened T9 in the CO to $7, and FF defends as usual. As usual, he donks $7 into me on a J62 board and at least I have a BDFD and BDSD to pump it to $23. He hesitates and calls, and a J rolls off, followed by a check. Annoyed I can’t turn anything, I check and give up when I should just be barrelling off since it’s less likely he has Jx and most of his FDs are going to be ahead of my ten-high. River A, he snaps in $70 and I throw my hand away in disgust.

However, I bink a trip goal a few orbits later! MM limps UTG, folds to me in the BB where I raise it up to $12 with pocket Kardashians (88), with MM calling. Flop is a beautiful A86, in which I lead $6, with MM calling. Turn is an even more scintillating 8, and we both check. River 5, I bet $20, MM thinks awhile and folds, and I show my 88 for a $100 Quad bonus. Doesn’t get me unstuck (down $89 after 4 middling hours), but it helps. Not sure how many live hours I’ve played lifetime over the 14 years of casino play, but no HHs or BBJ shares until this one (though I did spin the Aces Cracked Wheel once at Excalibur after getting Aces cracked for $400 on a hand I asked the dealer NOT deal me into, at 5am, to a drunk guy in a Dick in the Box costume who limp/called $25 with Q4 and flopped two pair...I won $20 back on the Wheel).

I grab some ideally quick dinner (it was not) at Cabo Wabo at Planet Hollywood. Thankfully, I made a reservation a few hours prior, as I’d see people showing up and being told it’s a 90-120 minute wait (who is waiting for ANYTHING in Vegas outside of Michelin-Star restaurants btw). The waiter was clearly overwhelmed, but it took 20 minutes just to get water and put in an order (carne asada, grilled chicken, and shrimp tacos). Food was solid, otherwise.

My bar for Mexican is not high, though (I live next to a Chipotle, so that should tell you something).

I venture out to Caesar’s for some alternative $1/$2 5-handed action. It’s been forever since I’ve played here - the last time had to be 9-10 years ago, back when it was in the old space behind the sportsbook (and a much larger, nicer room). The only time I ever took a shot at $2/$5, and I got stacked 2x in an orbit against the same ****ing guy (first time with QQ v AK AIPF, he rivers an Ace, second time hands are reversed and I brick out). Let’s run a tiny bit better this time.

Remember when I said that Aria game was dry as the desert? Welp, compared to that (and the Flamingo table), this table is (NSFW)...

Spoiler:

WAP

First hand, folds to SB on my direct left, late 50’s short Asian gentleman dressed like someone you’d see drunk and passed out at a sportsbook on a Tuesday afternoon (we’ll call him Danny Degen) insta-jams for $130, and gets snapped by a shorter Troy Polamalu lookalike in the BB (we’ll call him mini-TP/MTP).

DD has AK, MTP with...22! DD binks an Ace on the river, and is drinking his beer as fast as he’s shoving chips in. An orbit later, MAWG limps UTG, 1 other limp, and MTP makes it $30 in the BB. UTG MAWG thinks for 20 seconds, then jams in for $250! MTP calls! MAWG has...66?! Mini-TP...JTo!? 66 holds and he doubles (and don’t think he plays another hand). MTP is in for 3 buyins and we’re still on our first dealer.

Folds around to DD in the SB, who asks MTP if he would chop. MTP says no. DD jams for $300, MTP snaps him. DD has...92. MTP? 22. MTP holds, and now it’s DD’s turn to be in for another buy-in or 4. 2 downs go by and I don’t think I’ve seen MTP missing a single flop so far. Both him and DD in for minimum 4 buy-ins each. DD has opened from $40 to $300 so far. Whenever he does this, he starts screaming “BABY, CALL, CALL, CALL, BABY BABY OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD!”. He’s had 2 beers since sitting, but pretty sure he isn’t drunk, just nuts. MTP is still on his first 20 oz. Mountain Dew, so same thing. Oh, they’re all-in against each other again, BvB, J2 vs K4. Other movies DD pulls include:
- Opening for 60 and folding to a shove for $150
- Bluffing $80 into a $6 limped pot on the turn, jamming $200 on the river, getting called and instantly mucking his hand
- Open shoving 3 hands in a row while constantly pulling his mask up and down (and being scolded by the dealer).
You could tell me this guy has the Black Plague and I’m not leaving my seat. While it’s nice to be able to catch an unexpected show when all the real shows are dark here, but can I get some hands, please?!

Sure enough ($250 effective), we get Golf Shirt Gary, a SEC-loving South Carolinian who on a normal night would be the craziest at the table but is a distant 3rd here, opens to $12 in CO, I flat 88 OTB, and MTP calls in BB. Flop 467, checks to me and I bet $20, with both calling. Turn is a bittersweet 8 (preferring a 5, since ATC is in range of both these guys). MTP leads $20, GSG raises to $60, I flat ??, MTP jams, GSG jams, lol odds and stuff I call, GSG turns over T9, but the river is a sweet sweet 7 for the triple-up. MTP claimed he had 53o

MTP sadly leaves for $2/$5 but DD sticks around, as I swear I see him drop minimum $1200 in what is now hour 2. I get the absolute dream spot when UTG limps, and I see AA in the SB. Never in the history of my life has there been a more obvious time to limp AA in the blinds of a live cash game. Sure enough, I limp, and DD blasts his now $130 into the pot in the BB. I can’t call fast enough, and see the board run out what seems to be a safe 337QJ. Well, SEEMS to be safe. Not safe when he rolls over 53 I can’t even be mad because he’s so insane. (and thankfully wasn’t fully stacked). He blows that stack off quickly, reloading to odd amounts now. A few orbits later, he starts limping (and often limp-reraising) instead of his usual 30-100bb opens. He limps UTG, Button and SB come along, and I pump it to $22 with QQ in the BB. DD does his little dance and makes it $100 even, with everyone else folding back to me. By god, if he has AA, lol everything. I stick his last $84 in, he calls and the board runs out A2346. I’m 63% on that river against two random cards, but certainly feels like I’m headed towards another fun AIPF beat. But he mucks! Then leaves! What a ride.

It’s not over yet, though - as GSG, another Gary at the table, and I, who believes in rule of 3, identify as “Gary In Training” (which he questions but he’s drunk so he think it’s funny), move to another table with a clearly wasted, newly-minted 21 year old, we’ll call Henry Hand Rankings. Why that? Because he...does not know what hands beat what. He’s asking the dealer to help him on nearly every river he sees, so much so that he gets the floor to print him out a hand-rankings sheet to use at the table.

Is there a better feeling than betting made hands on the river, while your opponent pulls out the cheat sheet, is openly pointing to each made hand on the ranking sheet, saying he doesn’t have that but you probably don’t either, then calling you with 3rd pair?

That was what I got to enjoy on at least 6 hands with him. Not for full stacks, more like death by a thousand value bet paper cuts. He eventually busts, and I call it a night. In for $300, out for $985

P.S. Why in God’s name are they making the $2 and $25 chips shades of green?! This is not a good thing to confuse.

Day 5

I awake on Friday, free from remote work, and focused on obtaining some lace and lunch action pre-poker. I head to the Fashion Show Mall in hopes of smashing some Amex points bonuses (3x on Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s, and Nordstrom’s) and having some fresh sneaks I can actually photograph for the next TR. Alas, all of their respective selections are Gucci garbage and what not, but I do spot a store of my favorite brand (Ecco). See a pair I love for $160, so I try them on, say I love them but will come back later...and immediately order them on Amazon for $74

Soft Long Lace Sneaker, 8/10

Going to retail hell for this one

Off I go to the daytime main event - the only functional buffet in all Vegas (at the time) - The Buffet. High hopes that it’s far superior to the junk they tried to pass off at Encore Boston Harbor. My hopes are proven correctly heightened as I dive into a diverse decadence of deliciousness.

Fruit Bowl - 7.5/10

Carne Asada Tacos - 6.5/10

Breakfast Potatoes 6/10

Gouda Mac & Cheese - 7.5/10

Slow Roasted Prime Rib of Beef 5.5/10, a bit flavorless

Chili Marinated Sirloin 8/10

American Waygu Beef Sliders 8.5/10 didn't even realize these were vegan

Cinnamon Sugar French Toast 8.5/10

Lobster & Shrimp Eggs Benedict 9/10

Grilled Salmon 6/10

Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream I think 8.5/10

I do not miss long buffet lines full of indecisive imbeciles of pre-COVID times. I feel like the new model of ordering off the menu is a win for everyone: encouraging better portion control, eliminates long lines, and results in less food waste. Then again, this is coming from a guy who grew up unironically loving Ponderosa and Old Country Buffet, so don’t mind my hot dish takes.

Plan for poker is to jump into $130 MTT at Orleans and play some $8/$16 O8 if things go south. I manage to get there in a timely manner this time with no 45-minute wait to be an alternate. Not much happens in the first level, but fate decides to give me a proper murking shortly into level 2. Folds around to CO at 100/200, this smarmy-looking surfer brat with 25k behind, who limps. I limp along OTB with J9 and 18k back, and both blinds are in. 4 to the flop which comes T84. Checks to Smarm who snaps in 1000, I call, blinds fold. Turn gets real nutty when a Q rolls off and CO checks. I sprinkle 600 in, to which Smarm check-minraises me to 1200. For the life of me, I can’t remember the last time I was blessed with a live check-minraise when I had the stones. I give it a little tap-tap-tap-a-roo to 4200 and he insta-shovels his chips in, with me beating him into the pot. He turns over...QQ. Spicy river T and I’m out of there. I tell everyone I had a hot date with the $8/$16 O8 list and a soggy Subway footlong from the food court anyway.

Post-sad sandwich, I bide my time in a $1/$3 NL game that comes out to a negligible -$16 in 80 minutes of action until I’m called for the O8 game. No visible OMCs, but massive stacks of 50-150 big bets in front of most. I proceed to continue the earlier Orleans murking, dusting off $284 in a mere hour. Scoop a pot? Of course not. Split a pot in anything but a HU pot? Absolutely not. Get railroaded with the 2nd/3rd nuts against nut/nut 6 times? Plenty of that!

I Uber to Caesar’s, hoping to make up some ground from the Orleans ordeals. Alas, I get some properly nitty action, including a producer from PornHub who, 5-handed, did not raise a single time in 2 hours, and check-called the 2nd nuts on the river twice in <$10 pots. Is it me or are those industry people overall nits? I remember coming out here during the AVN awards 7 years ago, and can't remember a single guy in the biz being spewy in any of the cash games I played in (albeit not higher stakes). I saw Mini-TP in action at $2/$5 and got on the list, but a seat never opened up I come out ahead $81 to cap off a rather Two-Faced day

Day 6

Last day of action for me here as the plan is play the Venetian $340 and try to put together the right combination of run-good and play-well that’s been missing this trip in MTTs.

I grab a quick chicken quesadilla meal at Canonita (though not quick enough, missing the first level)

Chicken Quesadilla - 7/10

Not much happens until 200/300/300 when LJ (~6’4, playing every pot, looks like he walked out of a No Limit Soldiers music video circa 1999) opens for 1500, I flat 33 in the CO, but an OMC jams for 5200 in SB, with it folding back to me. I started hand with ~19k (re-entry available), meh spot but getting over 2:1 so it’s fine and I call. He has A9 but it runs out Q84TJ for the dagger river.

A few hands later, I open UTG+1 7-handed to 1100 with KK, SB (NLS) and BB (MAWG, bunch of University of South Carolina gear so we’ll call him Greggy Gamecock) both call. Flop is QJT, both check to me and I decide to pot-control and check back (didn’t feel great about it). Turn is unfortunate 4, NLS leads 3600, GG folds, I call, river 3, NLS checks, I check and he wins with 56

Same level - HJ limps, NLS limps in CO, GG makes it 1500 OTB, I find JJ in SB...but mental error in just throwing in a 5k chip instead of...more than 1 chip. **** me running since I verbally make a stink about it in a momentary lapse of common sense. Obviously, the call stands. Flop T57 I check, hoping to check-raise (is my hand really strong enough to do so OOP, though?), but ofc everyone is going to check worse than (my likely overpair) there. Turn is naturally A, I check again, HJ checks, NLS jams for 8k, GG snaps him, I fold, NLS shows A5, GG has T9 oh well. Results-oriented, very good chance NLS isn’t fold to a squeeze pre, and isn’t folding flop during the re-entry anyway, but still, an unforced error.

At 200/400/400, UTG+1 opens for 900, I call 55 on the button. Flop 325, he checks, I stab 1000 and get called. Turn 8, he checks, I 3000, he thinks and calls. I don’t think he check/calls flop and turn with Ax (except maybe A4) or King-high . Feels more like an overpair with one spade, or maybe AK with a . River T, he checks for 3rd time, I think and jam 6400. Hoping for a hero call from an overpair, but not sure he can really call anyway after I bet 3 streets. He thinks awhile and folds.

Same level, I open 1200 UTG with TT, BB (Greggy Gamecock) flats. Flop 924, he check/calls my 1300 c-bet. Turn 7, BB then donks 2100. Weird move - did he turn a set? Does he have something like A7? 56? Flopped a set and playing it extremely strangely? Taking a stand with A9? Exactly 97? I raise to 6000 because I feel like flatting here and calling spicy rivers is gonna suck, so hoping he just flats and I can navigate blank rivers better? He instead snapjams to put me all-in,, whoops. I block T8 (and he could have a bunch of dumb 7x hands since he’s playing trash). I just don’t feel like I’m getting shown a set here - it’s either 97 or some combo draw. He calls clock, but it takes the floor 5 minutes to even get to the table to count me down. With 3 seconds left, I call and get shown...97

Buttttttttttttttttttttt the river is a 4 to counterfeit him, putting me at 33k.

300/600/600, this 6’3 hunky 20-something farm boy opens for 1500 UTG, UTG+1 calls and I flat OTB with QJ. Flop Q34, Farmy fires 3400, UTG1 folds, I call. Turn 4, Farmy bets 5000, ehhhhh I call. River 2, Farmy bets 5000 again and I’m like “is he really playing overpairs/AQ/KQ this weak?” But also he bet 3 streets in a $340 so goddammit Burdz, believe he has better than Q ****ing J. Naturally, the wrong decision is made and I get shown AQ.

I get chipped down pretty hard after that, and jam 99 UTG for 7400 at 400/800/800. NLS snaps me with...JT? Board runs out 68877 for a sweat but I hold.

About an orbit later, Mr 97o opens for 2500, I jam 99 for 15.5k and he gladly snaps me with KJ. Board runs out KQQ24 and I’m dust.

I trudge over to Guy Fieri’s Vegas Kitchen and Bar and sulk in the Bacon Mac N Cheese Burger. Pretty good burger - likely pairs much better with the binge drinking atmosphere this place encourages (I was asked several times if I wanted to order alcohol, in which I demurred).

One last shot at cash for the trip with some more Caesar’s $1/$2. Not a ton of notable hands, other than my first ever AIPF with AA v KK (which seems pathetic considering how long I’ve been playing). I open to 10 UTG 5-handed with AA, OMC makes it 37 in the SB (pretty sure he actually put down a newspaper to raise). I make it $80, and he snap-jams for $200. I double-check my cards to make sure I actually have AA, as I’m very used to be on the other side of this. I call, it runs out 49467 and I defeat his KK. I finish up $291 after 3 hours to get a quick snack before calling it a night (and a trip).

Day 7

I check out from Harrah’s, take an Uber to the airport, getting there properly early (~2 hours), enough to enjoy the lone open lounge that accepts my Priority Pass, The Club in Terminal 3. Gone are the hearty warm buffets and self-serve middle-shelf alcohol, but not the worst to get a quick couple of snacks and fresh fruit and dodge the 30-minute waits for most of the fast food options. Nevertheless, I make the mistake of giving the Chili’s a shot, and get this cold piece of garbage when I order a simple cheeseburger.

They eventually replace it with something reasonable, but that’s the closest I’ve ever come to leaving a single penny as a tip (stupid pandemic empathy for restaurant staff busting their asses for curmudgeon nit customers). Nothing to further write online about with the JetBlue flight home (other than it being far more crowded than the flight coming in).

Results:
+$650 in cash (+$934 if I forgot how much i sucked at O8)
-$820 in MTTs (1 final table but no monies)
But broke even on amount of kidneys I came here with, so close enough to a win!

Not a bad time - other than missing buffets (especially cheap, bad ones) and the occasional show, Vegas felt fairly similar to previous trips. Will certainly consider again if I can’t get out to non-poker destinations due to COVID. Plus it inspired me to write this piece here for a writing class at work, that got me accepted into a curated writer’s group on Medium

Thanks, OP. Great report. First one I've read since the pandemic hit. We are heading to Vegas in November, and this report really gets my spirits up!
