You’re right man, my apologies.

In other news I was greeted by this walking into Harrah’s this morning.

And had a ‘trust the system’ might at aria. Lost $1400 in a weird hand but ended the night up $580.

Trying to get some sleep at 4:51am local time...

Nope. Sleep doesn’t exist here. Woke up at 9 am for no reason. Can’t decide if I should just hit my joint and grab some bloody Mary’s by the pool or try and catch a poker game. Or maybe some all you can eat sushi.

Either way my body is going to break down at some point soon.

Sorry for the late arrival but in. I’m exact opposite of this, cargo shorts, T-shirt’s, $30 watch and new balance, hat.

I work in the corporate world and there’s a fight there seems between folks like me that are trying to push a more west coast techie dress culture and the ones wearing suits.

Random hand thoughts:

1. When you have AA and he c/r flop, ch turn, he never has a set or 2p here. Those hands won't slow down. So you are ahead almost 100% of the time, everything except QJ. You should bet the turn. From your description, he's never folding a draw, likely not Jx, and maybe not any pair. even sets up a river shove if I remember the hand correctly. Lot of money there.

2. AA when the river pairs the 5, that's a great card for you. FD bricks out, so if he has any stationy tendencies or you have any kind of LAGgy image, I think he'll call more often with Kx than AT. So go for it, play the rich drunk tourist angle.

3. What to say about the suit, if you can pull off self-deprecating: "Oh, I just got off the set...No no, it's a bit part, just 2 speaking lines...no no, I only do stage work back home, but my agent had a connect and set it up for me...well I signed an NDA so I can't say, but it's a sequel to a well-known heist movie set in Vegas...."

Late reg is still open!

Haven’t had a single cigar yet, so I think it might be a joint, cigar, drink, Pai Gow time.

Sounds as if you are having a blast. Awesome. Keep it up.

BTW, I'd flat the QQ from OP (especially since I don't have reads on the other two!).

Sorry, MarshMan, a little off your thread, but I was playing yesterday (Sunday) morning at Horseshoe Southern Indiana and there was a guy in a suit. Turns out he had gotten married Saturday and he was supposed to meet his wife for breakfast, but was still at the tables. Some very angry men showed up around 1:00 and took him away! Can you say, "annulment."

Must have been a fun wedding night

Here’s a fun hand for you:
2/5 about 1100 effective. I’m tight and card dead so I have a hyper nitty image.

MP raises to 15 and I 3bet with KK. Asian guy (hasn’t gotten out of line at all yet) 4bets to 150. Loose Indian guy (I’ve played with him before) 5bets to 300.

Original raiser folds. Im mentally tired and a little hung over and don’t feel like dealing with this crap so I muck. Asian guy tanks and calls.

Flop 235. Asian guy checks, Indian guy bets 300, Asian guy ships it. Asian guy shows QQ and Indian shows AA.

If the Indian guy cold calls I definitely play or ship preflop.

You’re in for a treat, Vegas is known for its AYCE sushi. There’s a bunch in Chinatown about 10-15 minute Uber away from the Wynn poker room.

Some tips from Gobboboy.

http://jimmyeatsvegas.com/sushi/

Heck I think Andrew Neeme did a vid recently on how to order as well.

Took it very easy last night and got some decent sleep. I’ve had one too many Vegas trips where you go too hard or try and make a big money push and I was not in the mood.

Thanks for everyone who followed along with me. I’ll post some closing pictures and results when I get home.

Until next time!

Finally made it home and of course could only get 4 hours of sleep. I appreciate everyone who tagged along with me and it was a super fun and informative trip. Had some TR run good and here's how I ended up:

Up 2700 including my $500 promotional win and Pai Gow losses. I'm a decent player who is trying to improve, but I definitely ran good. And by that I mean most of my sessions were so short it could've gone either way. One of my goals was to play in different games and different rooms and I've been doing this long enough that a 1-3 hour session is lol short. The Aria session was the only one where I got stacked for a buy in early on and played well to grind back up.

Thoughts about each spot:
Venetian - Solid overall dealers and environment. Only played 1 orbit of 1/3 so can't comment but the 2/5 was fine. A little on the weak/passive side at my table and didn't really see any big action anywhere. I prefer the $1000 cap. 1/2/5 PLO is laughably nitty/grumpy/bad. Even the dealer at the Wynn confirmed most players go to the Venetian to play a tournament and then immediately come back to the Wynn/Encore to play cash.

Bellagio - Caught this casino early morning. Few older guy regs and no crushers. I don't particularly like the $500 cap buy in, but that's just a personal preference. Floor was really slow here to fill seats and seemed like they were overly flustered by their basic job roles. (i.e. filling seats on a Saturday morning game AND having 2 tables complain that cocktail service was super slow.) 5/10 game was very interesting for me. I think it was the first time I've played it and I sort of wish I sat for longer. I have a young face and was obviously from out of town and have this look that screams 'Just 3bet and 3 barrel and he'll fold.' I think I could've made a lot of money just calling down hands at the middle/top of my range.

Aria - Probably my favorite spot. Good mix of regs and tourists at the 2/5 and was not intimidated in the least by the regs. $1000 cap. Mixed in a few good 5/10 players who were waiting for a table and it created some interesting spots. Wish I could have sat at the PLO here after all of Javanewt's praises about it.

Wynn - Second best spot. Just a beautiful place full of beautiful people. Ambiance feels bright and airy and makes the Aria seem like a dark hole. Feel like the odds are better that rich people will come donk off stacks to you compared to Aria or Bellagio. Obviously a super small sample size.

WSOP Cash - I'm glad I made it out here, but least favorite spot for me. Tons of people around and I literally got lost and couldn't find the lower buy in cash games. But for all the people walking around, at the end of the day it's just you and your table and the minor complaints just all added up. (Dealers are meh; no auto shufflers; cheap/uncomfortable chairs and table; freezing cold; no comps). I can see the benefits of busting in a WSOP tournament and wanting to get right into a cash game. But if you are waiting more than 2 hours to play 1/3-5/10 you should go somewhere else.

Never made it to Planet Hollywood and my buddy played at our Harrah's a few times. Glad I avoided Harrah's.

Random Thoughts:
Haven't tallied up my bills, but dang this place is expensive. I'm a little scared to put it all together, but if you are visiting on a budget and are hoping to grind 1/3 I would suggest picking a room and sticking with it. Build up enough comps that you don't spend $20-50 per meal.

Vegas regs never chop. I didn't really notice until a guy (visitor) at the Bellagio mentioned it. After that it was weird how often I noticed the same thing.

Never use a vegas cab. I think I took 2 cabs and one of them long hauled me over to the Rio. Was talking with an Uber driver and he said they even try to screw the locals who can easily recognize what's going on.

There was another thread about how pros/regs should make the game more comfortable for rec players. I've changed my mind about this. At 1/2-1/3 it doesn't matter in the least. Stay in your lane or watch Netflix or be the drunkest guy in the room. If you are grinding 1/3 more power to you, but you need to beat this game and move up ASAP. Almost everyone here is a fish so you need to be able to beat this game without having some drunk guy triple you up every weekend.

2/5 - Here is the first level where you COULD spend energy to help rec players feel more comfortable and you'd get a return on it. I'd say it's just up to you if you want to make it happen.

5/10 - First time playing this level and granted, it was noon at the Bellagio, but not one word was spoken for hours. I was obviously out of place and a mark for the table and it would have done wonders if anyone opened up at all. I made a post about this above and I tried to joke around a little but it was not happening. I don't know why a rec-fish would ever sit at this game. I personally loved the challenge and was not looking for the softest game I could find, but my advice for 5/10 grinders is play your game well and be as inviting as possible to new marks. I think it really starts to make a difference here.

All of that was just my 2 cents on a super small sample size.

I'm going to get back into my swing of things and maybe make another post about watches just because I alluded to it and enjoy discussing it. But if you were entertained by this TR and think I could make an interesting/entertaining PG&C thread let me know.

Until next time!

So glad you had a great trip and made money! Such a fun place to be. I really love Vegas. Sorry you didn't get to play any PLO at Aria. Usually great games! I, too, love Wynn. Good action last time I was there and the room is very nice -- much nicer than when it was actually at the Wynn

Totally agree about keeping rec/fish happy and entertained. Best way ever to make money. I think I drive some of the regs nuts with all my chatter, but it livens up the game a little, and if nothing else, the regs start dogging for me, which makes me money!

Thanks so much for taking the time to write your report and share pics, etc. Really fun read. I need to get back to Vegas.

Oh, and I love watches Got my husband a Longines for his 50th (I work in horse racing, so had to be a Longines) and got myself an Ebel for my birthday a couple of years ago.

I enjoyed your trip report and the very nice recap of your observations on the different poker rooms. You and I have the same top 2 poker rooms as our preferences. I completely agree with your observations for the 2-5 and 5-10 games. I also realize I will be a mark in the higher buy in games but when you are playing with a bunch of mutes/nits it makes me change tables /poker rooms quickly. I would like to get some entertainment out of the poker play. If I wanted to get silent treatment in a game that is supposed to be social, poker would lose much of it appeal and it would certainly die slowly as a game with no fresh players picking up the game.

I have lots of Aldens but I would never wear them to Vegas. Well, once I took some suede Aldens there once. But I don't think it's great, no matter how good the fit is, the heels become uncomfortable with a lot of walking. "Whatever you do, take care of your shoes."

A lot of walking?? The guy with $600 shoes can't afford Uber??

I'm just kidding. I, too, am a cheap casino-nit and there really isn't any way to avoid tons of steps. Even if you set up in just one casino for the day it's still a lot of walking.

Part Deux - Watches

I'm an engineer by education and have always been fascinated by watches. I understand why people think they are dumb/overpriced/waste of money, but for me I really appreciate the art and engineering behind them. You may have noticed that I come across as very wealthy as I wear my suit and these guys:

But I actually inherited both from my grandfather when he passed away. Well, to be honest, he was an alcoholic and would NEVER have given away anything but I had a closer relationship to him than any of the other grand kids so I asked for the watch after he passed. Sort of a similar story with the ring. It was given to my dad (and was horribly old-man gaudy) and I asked for it when I got married. We took it to a jeweler who remade it into what you see today. It's technically rose gold colored and the watch is yellow gold.

And the Rolex had a cracked crystal and a champagne colored face when I got it. I sent it back to Rolex and they let me change the face so I went with blue which I think is a really cool one off. I normally would never have bought such a watch, but it has sentimental value and fits with my 'Old Man Marsh' moniker I received in college. I usually switch out the gold band for a nice leather one to keep it a little more demure. I put the gold one back on for Vegas because Vegas is all about:

My advice for selecting a watch is to go to a website like jomashop and just start scrolling through to see what you like. A dive watch? pilot? Lots of complications? Simple Bauhaus? Once you find a style you like you can then find one in your price range.

For example:
These are all classified as Dive watches.

The first one is $190, the second one is $1000, the third is $4000, and the last one is $22,000.

A comment about Rolexes. In my opinion, Rolex is like the Bose brand of speakers. Everyone has heard of them. They make a good product. Seems high end. And it's not that they aren't any of these things, but when you get into the watch/speaker world there are many other higher end companies and products.

All that to say, I love the Rolex Sub. Everyone has one. And it's because it's a great looking watch at a good price point.

But let's reach a little if we are going to drool for a holy grail. As you might have noticed, I tend to gravitate towards the more formal world.

Something like a Patek Philippe

Or my personal grail watch: A. Lange and Sohn

I instantly notice a nice watch and even more so at the poker table where your hands are all the more prevalent. Most people don't want to attract too much attention to their $50k+ jewelry so instead of yelling out 'Holy crap, is that a Patek Philippe??' I generally just say something like 'that is a beautiful watch you have'. And if they engage from there we can dive into it.

I got to chatting with a very wealthy person once about watches and he said he only wears his Apple Smart watch. That in his circle of peers it became like an arms race to see who could out do each other with the most expensive time piece. He essentially said he got fed up with it and only wears his smart watch to rebel from that culture a little. Interesting problems for people worth $25 million+.

Alright everyone, that does it for this TR. If you want to hear me carry on about things I've started a PG&C thread here. May you run well and have all your mistakes be bailed out!
