Bankroll and shoe pic.

Can any old timers give me the story of how this idea originated or who first coined it?

The shoe thing started on accident. Not sure of the bankroll pic history...or if there even is one.

Always a fun throwback

*Engage Old Man Marsh Rant*

I’d like to use this anonymous sphere of influence to discuss an elephant in the poker room. Maybe even an elephant in the white, straight, male community.

You dress like crap. Get some style.

In a previous life or two I worked in an office/cubicle and started to get into men’s fashion blogs. I coined the phrase ‘tie day Friday’ and started to slowly get some converts. This rant could go on and on for pages but I’d like to start with the fundamentals. A true story helps introduce Part I: Shoes

I met a guy at a cigar shop and complemented him on his watch. I think it was a gold Rolex Sub and he said the following: I went to a strip club and all these girls were all over me. I was wearing unstylish dad jeans but couldn’t get them to go away. I asked what the deal was and one of the girls said ‘We look at watches and shoes, and both of yours are expensive.’

We will start with shoes.

I lean towards the more ‘formal’ end of fashion. i.e. your tennis shoes may cost more than my 5/10 buy in, but I know the difference between brogues and balmoral shoes and which ones work better in formal weddings. If you picked out your colorful Puma’s because they match your MCG bag and have trim color that matches you hat, this is not about you. If you know why you bought it, rock it hard. It’s just not my wheelhouse.

If you make over $80k per year or you interact with people who make $125k+, you need to buy a good pair of shoes. You also need a decent suit. I’ll make it easy for you: go to your local www.suitsupply.com and tell them what you do and that you don’t want to look like a 16 year old Staples employee. You don’t need to know the difference in full canvas or half canvas, but just know they have a good product. And they trend more contemporary, but the tailor will fit your suit to your needs.

Then comes shoes. My personal preference is Allen Edmonds. Goodyear welting. All kinds of styles. Takes a great shine. You don’t need a $1500+ John Lobb, but invest in a pair of AE. I’ve had mine for 7+ years I think. And you can almost see my reflection in them.

‘But they aren’t as comfortable as my sort of white New Balances.’ One of the things about buying nicer items is the service along with it. You aren’t 12. Have someone help you find a good fit. That’s 90% of the battle.

At a minimum just start throwing away clothes with obvious stains. I mean can we all at least agree on that??

/end rant

Part II: Watches will come when I’m in Vegas. And I will be wearing a suit Friday. Getcha Some!

Some of the photos are gone, but this thread has some background on LVL TR traditions.

I’ve had two pairs of Johnson Murphy dress shoes for 15 years. Many many new heels and half soles. Shined religiously by me or the shoe shine guy in the courthouse. Comfortable as hell and still look great.

MarshMan knows what he’s talking about.

Recently started accumulating watches as well.

I'm on the lower end of the fashion spectrum, but when I made the incredibly minimal upgrade from daily t-shirts to occasional button downs--The Gap Black Friday sales edition--it totally looked like I stepped up my game. Then I gained 5 pounds and they shrunk the weeist bit and I'm mostly back to tees.

I think Swingers is a movie where if that was your generation (as I am), it hit every note perfectly, right down to beating on your friends while watching Gretsky bleed. Ocean's 11 is always great, no matter your mood.

Loving this thread, keep the reports coming!

And now to REALLY pull things off the rail. (Mods, I promise I am leaving for Vegas tomorrow and will take these shenanigans elsewhere after this weekend. )

I'm going to link two YouTube videos. I suggest you watch them after having a few drinks or a few tokes. You will probably need them as a reference if we run into each other at the tables:

(In reality, the first 2 min are the only funny parts.)

Nice! I got some J&M chukka boots and really like them. I think I sent one pair of my AE's to get resoled this year for the first time. I told my wife that it's worth the $300+ because I'll keep them for at least 15 years. I'm holding up my end of the bargain so far!

Dressing like that should get you lots of action! My husband dresses in a way to get action -- nice shoes (trendy -- never tennis shoes), slacks or trendy jeans, and a fancy button down (sometimes a silk short sleeve button down in the summer, like a fun Tommy Bahama), nice watch. Different style, but works incredibly well. On NYE, he wears a tux and I wear a gown -- always gets us action, especially at PLO!

$20 at check in got us the closer tower. Getting some food and calling ahead to get on all the poker lists.

We’ll see how long it takes for first hand dealt.
