It's not "anecdotal" -- these are actual examples (just a small sample) of theft occurring at TSA checkpoints. A simple google search will show plenty more examples of people being caught (on tape) stealing things from bins/luggage at TSA checkpoints.
It is almost inconceivable to be robbed of something on your person in a major US airport particularly inside the security perimeter. The relative risks are precisely the opposite of what you suggest, which is/was my point.
Also telling a TSA officer you have cash in your pocket is hardly flaunting.
Edit:
No need to take my word for it. Directly from a TSA spokesperson: Sari Koshetz, a spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration said, “Passenger-on-passenger theft inside the checkpoint, unfortunately, is a big issue.”
(article is about people snatching things out of bins)
"TSA agents at Miami International Airport said they see these thefts once or twice a week; passengers grabbing other people’s stuff from bins where they were placed for safe passage through the security checkpoint."
