I don't understand why it is but seems like maids love to clean rooms.
What if you let the maids come in the first day, give them half of their tip and leave a note or tell them you don't want maid service the rest of your trip or only when you call down and request it. I usually do this when I stay at the MGM and never have any problems. This, along with using the room safe and some common sense should be sufficient.

Exactly. I found a youtube video and posted it here somewhere a while ago that showed a guy busting into a room safe with a paper clip in under 60 seconds.

Or just call housekeeping and tell them to not make up your room for X days.

His experience of overzealous maids is polar opposite of my experience every place I've stayed in Vegas. They'll call and leave a message but that's about it.

What's the best/quickest route from the airport to RIO by car? (Basically, how should I tell my cabbie to go if I'm trying to get there as quickly as posisble?)

Fastest: probably freeway. Your cabbie will thank you.

Best: anything but the freeway. IMO, Paradise to Flamingo or Trop to Koval to Flamingo.

What's the best restaurant? What's the best college? What's the best casino? What's the best country?

If you want the shortest route, ask for the shortest route. If you want the fastest route, ask for the fastest route. If you want the cheapest route, ask for the cheapest route.

FYP.

If it's crowded on Las Vegas Blvd, freeway is often cheapest in addition to the fastest. If it's not crowded on Las Vegas Blvd, Flamingo is the cheapest in addition to the shortest.

Right now, Flamingo is all effed up by road construction. If it's later than 4 pm on a Friday, it's a huge mess.

LOL. Are you sure you are using a Do Not Disturb sign. I was just in Vegas for about 12 of the last 20 days and I had the DND sign up every day. Once week was at the IP and last week at the Rio. As far as I know a maid never entered the room when the sign was up. I am 100 percent sure that none of my valuables were taken including my MP3, laptop ect.

Like someone else said I only need housekeeping once every couple days and its usually to get fresh towels and get rid of dirty ones. Maybe empty the trash.... If I want to get my bed made I let them come in and usually go take a walk or something.

I am not sure about what hotels you are staying at but if a hotel employee even just knocked on my door with the DND sign up I would damn sure be complaining. Let alone take it off and come into the room.

What is the point of having a DND sign if it can be ignored by housekeeping?

Exactly. Jay.'s store amazes me. I mean, who else is the DND sign designed for but the maids? If they're going to ignore it, there might as well not be one.

if you're super paranoid, put like $500 in the safe and the rest in some random pocket in your pants in your suitcase. i think a locked safe is probably going to keep a thief from going through ALL of your crap, but an open one wouldn't. this is total theory, so let me know how it works out.

also, regarding the DND sign. i've stayed in vegas dozens of nights with the DND sign on the door, and i've never had a maid come in that i know of.

The week I was at the IP I used the safety deposit box downstairs at the cage. I would not say I was paranoid but there are a lot of different people hanging around there and not much security especially in the elevator areas and room hallways. They did not even have a safe in the room. They must have had cameras in the hallways but not so sure about that either.

One time I even got off the elevator late at night because I was not too comfortable with someone that got on behind me and I was on the 18th floor.

When I was at the Rio I used the hotel room safe and did not think twice about it and had no problems. Again I did use the DND sign everytime I went out. All of the maids I had interaction with there(including the Imperial Palace) were very friendly and I don't really think they would risk their job to take something from a guest's room. I still would not be leaving C notes on the coffee table though.

In a nutshell if you have a bunch of cash and want 100 percent certainty then use a safety deposit box IMO.

Have there even been any threads about people having problems with their valuables at hotels?

Which hotels did this happen at? Like Bobo said the DND sign is made for housekeeping. If they call the room then fine thats one thing but to clearly disregard the sign and enter is not acceptable and should be reported.

Maybe it was after check out time and you were supposed to be gone by then? That's the only time I would think it is OK.

I've noticed sometimes when the outside door handle is the lever kind instead of a knob, and the sign has DND / please clean on opposing sides, the sign can spin around if it's not flush against the door. Sometimes just the wind of people walking down the hall can push the sign so it's spun sideways.

Buy some scotch tape imo.

+1 if OP is still looking for an answer. I like skylines from a lower elevation. On top of the stratosphere it's going to lose a lot of the reference for someone on foot at Vegas :-\
