AT&T should have the most robust 3G network, but I have no idea if you're able to just get a SIM card and a 1-2 month plan from them, or if you'll get any support using your own hardware.
It's also going to be interesting with all the iPhones and twittering that's going to be going on this summer and if the 3G network will hold up. At South by Southwest this year the coverage in Austin TX was basically killed due to all the iPhone usage. I'd be really surprised if there were any issues though.
Sprint (sprint.com) & T-Mobile (t-mobile.com) are other major carriers.
You can also look at "pay as you go" mobile broadband, which won't require a contract or anything. It looks to be a bit more expensive than a contract plan, about $50-60 per month for "unlimited" bandwidth. However that works out to the same cost as 5 days of hotel internet.
