Wrong.

Search and you will find. I booked Paris for $70 a night this weekend.
Monte Carlo, MGM, Mirage can all be had for around the same if you search hard enough.

Does searching "hard enough" simply mean going to this site?

I was gonna say.....give me any random weekend and I will find a mid or south strip room and hotel of comparable quality within $25 a night of Stratosphere's price. Places I consider comparable are IP, Ex, Trop (Towers, not Garden rooms), Bills.

And if you want better and same distance from strip, Orleans is typically able to fit that bill. And if you want better...much better, Golden Nugget is usually available cheaper than Strat.

Things have changed in the past six months. With often times even the 5* places under $200 a night on weekends.

Not the weekends that I've checked. Same old, same old, $250 for 3 or 4 star. I'm sure there are some cheap weekends, but on many weekends the prices are still sky high.

I think you just have to do some work to get good deals. I booked a trip for May 10-May 18th. Here's what I got:

Sunday - Friday
MGM Grand (Grand Tower Room) for $60/night. West Wing rooms were going for $50.

Friday
Red Rock for $69 (!!!!)

Saturday and Sunday
Flamingo for total of $179

What I did was book in advance, then continue looking for deals and then cancel the reservation. Originally my reservation was at MGM in the west wing for $69/night. I found the cheaper deal, canceled, and made another reservation.

The Red Rock deal I got from Hotwire.

I hope you've stayed at Red Rock before and know what you've gotten yourself into for one night. That is a great price and it's a fantastic property but it's 12 miles off the strip and a $40+ cab ride each way. When I stay there it's because I'll be there for awhile and will have a car.

Yeah but that is a smoking rate for the Red Rock.

I always rent a car in Vegas. I'm a pinball addict, so 2x daily trips to the pinball hall of fame are typical for me.

I'm really psyched about Red Rock. I've always wanted to stay there, but I'm not balla enough for the upscale resorts. I can't believe I got that deal for a Friday night.

This is not a reflection of Las Vegas Blvd.. On March 26th my girlfriend and I walked from Sahara to downtown straight down LV blvd. at 8pm Not ghetto, just wedding chapels, a few tatoo parlors, local resturants, ect. and eventually you walk past federal offices for the county. Now, a couple of blocks left or right might be shady, but we encountered no bums or hookers, or any nefarious-looking characters. It was a long walk with nothing of interest, but it is not desolate, and the "Duece" drives by every 3 minutes.

Variance. If there's a 1% chance each time you do that walk of being mugged, you haven't exactly proven anything by surviving your one "I did something stupid in a strange city and lived to tell about it" event. Most people probably have several such tales. Doesn't mean you recommend the experience to others.

But I'm sure you are correct, that long as you stay on LV Blvd as you migrate toward downtown, your odds of finding trouble are hugely reduced compared to what you'll find straying east/west.

Yes on both your points. We did not feel anxious, but it is not something I'd do again, cause there is no need, but LV blvd seems fine to me. $3 bucks each way on Duece is all it takes. Anyway, wasn't my first time in or around the city.

That portion of the strip has been featured in several episodes of cops including one where a drunk guy tried to screw with this old dude who just happened to be an ex boxer. The drunk dude was hella bloody on his face.

And you are several sigmas out not to have run across a crack ho walking the entire distance to downtown. You run good.

Q: Do players ever run it twice in a 1/3 or 2/5 game in Vegas? Would I be a total loser if I asked if my opponent wanted to run it twice in a 500BB pot at these limits?

A group of 8 of us coming into town next weekend. Since we are staying at the Hotel @MB, will be cabbing it when we head out at night. Better for us to get a limo or just regular cabs?

I don't even think it's allowed in most places.

I already posted about this earlier, but I'd like to elicit some opinions one last time before I book.

Going to Vegas for the whole month of July on a 4th year student pharmacist rotation at a Walgreen's. I've got two friends that will be coming for most of the month as well for poker.

I'll be renting a car for the month but they won't really have transportation outside of cabs/buses maybe. I'd like to get something lined up for lodging that isn't going to make me worried about getting scammed, so I was going to avoid craigslist.

My #1 idea right now is this Extended Stay hotel: GoogleMaps link. Some reviews have said it's kinda dirty, others say it's fine.. but for $39/night for the month, and close to the Palms/Rio, it's seems like my best bet.

Any better last minute ideas for me, in terms of a)affordability and b)proximity to strip so my buddies won't blow a lot of dough on transportation?

The reviews and map make me think you can walk to the Palms or Rio without dying, but I'd like to confirm that if people know of this hotel and how close to those casinos it actually is.

It's close but that area is kind of sketchy and it's going to be hot as balls. The walk to Rio would be about the same as from Bellagio to the Mirage. Won't be nearly as scenic a walk, if that's a concern, and getting cabs from there might be a phone call. As for the quality of the place I can't answer, I've never seen it.

arriving on friday with a group of 7 people. Is it possible to find a limo for all of us to take from the airport to the Hotel @ MB? If so, would this be cheaper than breaking up into a few cabs?

yes

No

P.S. Tell them you're going to The Hotel, not MB. It has a different entrance.

Two cabs will be cheaper than one limo. Limos are for hire right outside the airport. And like the other guy said, make sure you say THEHotel instead of Mandalay Bay unless you want to trudge all the way through the casino.
