I'm looking for any threads on the old vs. new Vegas. Why are they destroying all of the history on the Strip (the Stardust, the Frontier, the Desert Inn etc)? I'd rather stay at someplace really basic like the Desert Inn than Pirates of the Caribbean.

Don't know if you were ever in the Desert Inn, but it was anything but basic. It was in the top 2 or 3 places in it's heyday. But I know what you're saying.

Boyd probably wishes they never flattened the Stardust. It was always packed and always sold out on weekends right up until it was closed.

If you are just traveling up and down the strip you can hop the Deuce for $5 a day. Cheapest way, other than walking, to get up and down the strip.

A buddy and I are making our first trip to Vegas Sunday.
I'd like some advice on places to stay, and play low limit poker.

We'll be staying Sunday and Monday night in Vegas, and Wednesday and Thursday night, too. (with a trip to the Grand Canyon on Tues./Wed.)

I think we'll stay in a different hotel Wed/Thurs. just to mix it up.

Rates I've found online:
MGM $70
Hard Rock $55
Golden Nugget $53
Imperial Palace $38
Palms Casino $35

Can you recommend any of these hotels (or others)?
Basically, I'm just looking for a decent room, and a nice (low limit) poker room.
And nice, inexpensive places to eat.
We'll have a car. Is there a charge (how much?) for parking at the strip hotels? Fremont St.?

Sorry for the rambling.
Any advice or comments appreciated.

IP if oyu are looking to save money on a room and want to be on the strip right in the middle of it all. Location is very good with cheap food very close and several low limit poker rooms just as close.

If you want something different try Binion's downtown. Wednesday and thursday night for $9 a night on i4Vegas.com

Planning on going to Vegas on the 18th with some friends. However, because I decided to go last minute I'll have to take an earlier flight. Any ideas of what I should do to pass time from midnight on Thursday to noon Friday, without a hotel since it's under their name (ideally not gambling since I'll be doing that with the buddies, and would like to maybe see some sights before they get there.)

I'm not sure what you should do, but I recommend going to the hotel you are staying at anyway, just so you can unload your bags with the bellman. After that, going to a club will keep you busy until about 5. The breakfast buffet at Palms is cheap and really good. To be honest though, you'll be really tired if you stay up the whole time. It might ruin the time with your friends.

Personally I would pick Hard Rock or the Palms. Both are off-strip and likely to have the most eye-candy. I wouldn't stay downtown unless it was free.

You could book a room at Binions for $9 (www.i4vegas.com), do whatever downtown and actually get some sleep before your buddies show up. It will be much more fun if you are rested!

Hi,
I'm planning a trip in mid January for 10 nights to grind 2-5. Thinking about staying at the mgm, afaik they have 2-5 daily but would I be gtd a game running daily this time of year? Would I be better staying somewhere cheap and getting a cab to a bigger room?
Thanks

What are everyone's general thoughts on staying at Harrah's?

I'll be going to Vegas for the first time and I want to stay at a casino close to other big ones. Is the walk from Harrah's to Venetian, Mirage, and Caesars Palace as close as it looks on a map?

And how are the Harrah's restaurants/poker room?

Harrah's location is excellent for the casinos you listed. Harrah's has no restaurants that stand out or are worth a recommendation (of course you are close to other casinos with excellent restaurants). I can't comment on the action in the poker room as I don't live in Vegas.

I've stayed at Harrah's on my last two trips and I found the rooms to be a solid value. If you get a good price then Harrah's is worth it.

Right. Don't eat at Harrah's... just sleep there. And you can play there if you like NL1/2. For food--just about anywhere else is better. The buffet isn't toxic, but for a couple dollars more the Paris buffet is better. Nothing at Harrah's likely to kill you, unlike at IP, but you won't write home about it.

I stayed @ Venetian last jan while the AVN convention was being held there.

saw a ton of funny looking people, as well as porn stars.

was also @ Mandalay bay the night they held the awards ceremony, and saw some of the creepiest guys ever standing around waiting to catch a glimpse of the girls.

Nothing on the strip is as close as it looks on a map. But it's as close as you're gonna get on the strip.

The chipotle place is right outside. There's also an Outback on the other side. In all the times I've stayed at Harrah's (4 or 5) I've never eaten anything there or played poker there. Guess I prefer to use poker comps, which I lost $500 to get.

the walk from Harrah's to the Venetian is pretty short by almost any standard. It's about a quarter of a mile? And I think you can safely cross the street right there to get to the Mirage (I'm not completely sure, but since there's a stoplight there I have to assume you can). The annoying thing about getting to CP is that you can't really just jaywalk your way across the street so instead you'll have to walk to an intersection and cross the street and then walk back, but it's not the end of the world.

soah,

If you cross at the light near Margaritaville and head to the entrance next to Pure, the Caesar's poker room is less than a 5 minute walk from Harrah's. Just watch for the cabs heading into Caesar's.

hmm I guess that makes sense. The only times I went there I was coming from the other direction.
