A couple of friends and I will be visiting Vegas later this summer from the UK. What's the best way (ie safe but not getting screwed on fees/exchange rates etc) of getting ~$5k from the UK to Vegas? I assume cash would be the cheapest way, but what about a Neteller account? Traveler's cheques?

Banks in Australia are taking 5%+ spreads and I've heard some casinos are pretty good but I don't know which or where.

Help is appreciated.
When I exchanged Canadian for U.S. I found that I got the best rate directly from the Casino Cashier. I changed at IP. It was a better rate than I got from Wells Fargo, the only bank in my town that will change foreign currency. If you can call one or two casinos and ask them what there exchange rate is, I would do that. On the other hand maybe a Las Vegas local on 2+2 can just walk over to the cashier and ask. Its often displayed on a plaque at the cashier.

Quick question...

It'll be my first visit to Vegas in August and I'd like to know, as a Brit, what the situation is regarding drinks at the poker tables: I know this sounds very noob-like, but do the drinks actually cost anything when the waitress brings them to you? I know we are expected to tip a dollar or two but is it different for different poker rooms?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry to double post but I've just thought of another question...

I'll be in Vegas for 11 nights over August, as a first-timer, and I've been reading a lot about reward cards and discount room rates. The thing is, I've already booked my flight and hotel through Expedia so that's all done. I'll be staying at Harrah's.

Now, I plan to play a lot of $1/$2 cash game poker. I know it's in my best interest to sign up for a reward card straight away but does anyone out there have any tips on how I could really save money? I mean, how do I go about negotiating a room rate when I've already booked through expedia, for example? Will they actually pay me money for playing at their poker room?

Any sort of advice and tips about this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers in advance.

Sign up for a card immediately, you won't be able to negotiate room rates but possibly you can get food comps with the playing time. Tip a $1 for each drink and you will be perfect, can order pretty much anything (nicer the room the better quality liquor).

As above, you have opted out of any discounts because you booked with expedia.

Drinks are free, tip a dollar per.

They won't pay you to play, but youll get a dollar/hour in comps for food or whatever.

Sign up for a TR card when u arrive, hand it over anytime u play any game at any harrahs property, u will get 1$ an hour for poker, and some for slots/table games. When u check out on departure, hand them ur card and ask them to deduct the balance from your hotel bill. Points expire after 6 months, so as a European they probably will become worthless..

How creepy is it to be walking off the strip after dark? I'll be staying at the La Quinta on Paradise (recommended ITT). On a map it looks close so I was thinking when I was done for the night I'd just walk back. But if it is sketchy I'll just cab it. Does anybody know if the La Quinta has a shuttle? Thanks.

They dont have a shuttle.

Flamingo road between 'dise and the strip isnt that bad. Its east of there where it starts to get shady. I'd say its reasonably safe. How sketched out you get depends on your tolerance for "urbanness"

Incidentally, unless their prices have gone way down from what they used to advertise (like 70 a night), lq is a terrible value for the money. Tuscany has bigger rooms, a nicer pool, is less than half the distance to the strip on the same street, and is usually around half the price

edit -- or maybe not -- checked the weekend youre looking at and they want 150/niht.

Thanks and thanks Augie for your replies. I'll probably just take a cab. Yea, that weekend is nuts when it comes to hotel prices. Electric Daisy Carnival I guess?

lol are you serious? Ill admit that many areas in Vegas have an eerie feel to them, but they are very rarely as dangerous as they seem, at least for me lol. But I guess it all depends on where you're from.. But for anyone who feels this way, if you ever visit Philadelphia, dont stray too far from Broad Street lol.

What's the general rule at the Rio about phones/ipods, are you allowed to use them at the table or must one wait for a break to do a tweet or something? Also is there free wifi in the Rio (in the tournament area)? Thanks

Do whatever you want with phones and gadgets until you get to the money. Once you're in the money, no headsets. You can do whatever on your phone except talk. To talk you must be up and one table away.

There's wifi. It's not great, but it's there. It's called wsop 2011 I think.

You can use ipods at the table.

You can use our phone at the table, but not when you are in a hand.

There is free wifi in the tournament area, but the connection is not that great. You can browse on your phone, but the signal falls away regularly.
