Okay having a bit of trouble getting there, now that was sorted, the money transfer to rio is painful since I have to do $10 000 cash. Most probably a traveler's cheque (good idea?)

I get there on the 2nd at around 3pm, would it be too late then? How busy is it and what time do they close?

This thread has helped me alot, thanks again

Edit: Aus, Australia

Edit: I read some of the post, not all, but looks like I should carry a load of $1 (im assuming its notes?) and use to tip for everything? Is it that bad etiquette to tip, say 10%? Easier to calculate and Im not exactly loaded

walrus,

If you are planning to cash travelers checks at the casino cage, it is open 24 hours. As long as you have ID (passport) you should not have any problems. As for tipping etiquette, tipping what you can afford is much better than not tipping at all.

Yes, you probably should always have a few $1 on-hand for tipping (we call them 'bills' as in 'dollar bill; five dollar bill, twenty dollar bill' but often/usually just called by the denominations; i.e. ones, fives, twenties, etc.). Hundreds are now called hundos.

Calculating 15% is easy. Calculate 10%...then add 1/2 that amount to the 10%. Or calculate 10%...then double it to 20% and take halfway in-between the two numbers. Just a rough ballpark is good enough.

Tipping is a heated topic (in this country that is...probably not in any place that doesn't tip). You don't have to tip at all...and definitely don't tip if you get bad service/attitude. But most of these folks rely on tips to make a living (their wage is incredibly low because they are classified as a tipped employee..they might literally only make $2.50-$3.00 per hour in wage).

Also, just because you see a tip jar (like at the coffee shop) doesn't mean you should feel compelled to tip. Very often those folks make a 'regular' wage and only put the tip jar out because people are stupid enough to put money in it (often by the EXACT people that shouldn't i.e tipped employees...don't they realize they are screwing the 'real' tipped employees/themselves by tipping these 'regular' employees who sure wouldn't mind a tip...they cheapen the whole concept of tipping). It's kinda ******ed the way it all works here.

So I bring the 10k traveler's cheque to the casino cage, they give me 10k chips, then I get the entry?

When I arrive, should I go to palms first or register first since I need to register, then go to pstars for the hotel thingy? What do I do about luggage if I need to go to rio first?

You can register 24/7 (I think this is still true somebody will correct me if I'm mistaken), so unless you are rushed for time, just check into your hotel, get a drink and head over to the Rio after you get settled in.

I've never seen that. A bellman at some hotels can do that (most will not) but I've never seen it at the airport. The guy running the taxi line is a city/airport employee and don't seem likely to condone that sort of thing.

Perhaps the skycap shares with the taxi line guy, I would venture to say this is the case as the skycaps ARE there in Vegas, and make it SO worth it.

And it doesn't matter being a city/airport employee as everyone gets tips in Vegas.

Trust me, it works. Basically, the Skycaps have priority in the taxi line because it doesn't do them much good to stand there for 30 minutes. This obviously makes sense if one is helping Nickel Slot Grandma with a week's worth of luggage, but for a tip, they help anyone. I'd use it this time, but since I'm getting in around 3pm on a Tuesday, it's unlikely to be necessary.

Another option is to arrange for a sedan pickup from the casino you're staying at. It costs a little more (like $40 to mid-strip), but it's probably worth it if your casino isn't one of the very southern ones (i.e., the MGM area).

Everywhere I've ever been, Traveller's Cheques are treated like cash; there should be no clearance time.

Exactly. Make sure you're clear on what you're getting here; these are totally different things.

A traveller's cheque is not made out to anybody. They are preprinted in fixed denominations (IE $20, $50, $100, etc), and you sign them when you buy them, and then again when you cash them. They are meant to be used in place of cash at any place that takes them (just about any retailer should), most often by, go figure, travellers. American Express is the biggest issuer of these. The advantage over cash is if you lose them, they can be cancelled and replaced. These are always treated as cash if they are accepted.

A cashier's cheque is similar to a bank draft, or a certified cheque. It will be made out in somebody's name specifically, so it can only be used at whatever place it is made out to. They are meant to be used for a specific purchase. To my mind, they should also be treated as cash, but often aren't when they are from a foreign bank. I found this out when I sent one to Newegg.

Compared to back home:
1) very few people say 'please' or 'thankyou' or 'excuse me'

2) there's no cool breezes in vegas. take taxis, imo.

3) i imagine at least a couple of australians will get together to watch the footy late at night.

4) even though we supposedly speak the same language as americans, it is often hard to understand what they're saying.

5) you can take drinks out of licensed areas

6) you can turn right on red traffic lights

7) american food servings are excessively huge. Entrees will often be enough.

8) the weather never changes

Josem,

You forgot to mention the effect that an Aussie accent has on the ladies...........

Josem another thing you might want to add to that list is that people will like bump right into you like it was your fault for walking in their path, even if you make an effort to lean out of the way. They will not apologize either.

If this hasnt happened to you, i guarantee it will by the end of the series.

I guess people are right in saying canada + aus are similar , because with the exception of 3+6 i agree with everything (no right turns in canada)

Oh, I have that effect on ladies regardless of what country I'm in, so I didn't notice it.

That said, learning to play beer pong last night, some random girl walked straight past SpaceGravy to talk to me, so maybe there is more to it than I thought.

My god, I hope stars is wrong here, or am I screwed?

Thank you for your email.

If you arrive on July, 2nd with a traveler's cheque you will not have the
funds available on time before registration closes.

Harrah's will accept registration in person until the last starting day,
July, 6th.

The best way is if you bring $10,000 in cash when you come to Las Vegas.

Walrus,

I'd suggest that you contact Harrah's and ask them.

From Australia, the number will be 0011 - 1 - 1-800-eHARRAH (from http://www.worldseriesofpoker.com/legal/contact.asp)

Just want to ask them how long it takes a traveler's cheque to clear, if I was to bring it on the 2nd.

Could anyone please help?
