Sure wish I could take my 2024 bank account into a time machine back to 2008 Vegas. D’oh!

I dont think that room ever opened up. They were building it out, but pulled the plug. Probably because they knew the casino was shutting down. I think all they have is that live stream.

They announced the opening of a new poker room a few months ago, but that never came to fruition. Naturally enough, as the casino now will be closed (& imploded?).

Yeah, the Tropicana poker room was supposed to open the Friday of F1 Weekend. At the last minute they pulled the plug on it.

It's my personal record for losing a job! I auditioned to deal there November 1st. On Nov 6th they sent me an offer letter and I accepted. On November 13th I got an email that " the Poker - Dealer (Part Time) opportunity has been closed, due to current business needs." So I lost the job about a week before I was scheduled to start it.

I think when they were auditioning they expected the Trop to be open for at least another year. Maybe they pulled the plug when they realized it would be open for less than six months.

I lived for two years with a guy who owned his 3br/2.5ba house, paid $600 in rent (in 2018-2019).

If you want to own a place, you could be like him, take a mortgage, and rent out space to help with your payment.
When I’ve looked at Zillow- some solid small condos in $200-300k range in vegas. Idk how the areas area as I assume they probably aren’t great. The strip or close by prolly isn’t ideal location to live. Like even 2 br small small condos seem to be semi ok value for vegas minus the hoa fee- I don’t think paying 250-300k for a small condo is that bad if one wants to live in vegas.

I also saw a place that looked nice (was cheap kinda for vegas) but looked at reviews and people said stuff about roaches which was like WTF. I assume why it was cheap but it looked like a newer modern place. Guess reading reviews are big on condo properties or those communities.

It just depends. Quality of neighborhood can change block by block in LV. My first house in LV was at Rancho and Oakey. It was phenomenal, and the neighborhood south of us was also pretty good but the access from Sahara created a few more problems. We had basically no issues for the 6 years we lived there. Friends lived over on 5th place behind the Ocha Thai on LVB. Awesome little pocket there. They had a random dude in their backyard once, but drunk people exploring happens... Idk, just wasn't a dangerous area. Whereas go a block east of Paradise on Twain and hoo boy.

Maybe some of these aren't the best for leaving a house vacant for months at a time, but my point is that there are some gems out there for sure. Look for solid working class neighborhoods where people want a sense of community and good neighbors. When you're looking your realtor should be able to help you, but realtors have to be careful about what they say because of fair housing policies. Ethical ones can't tell you about "the element" etc because of how that language has been used historically to segregate towns.

But for value I would look at older neighborhoods in Green Valley (not GV South) and basically the I-15 corridor south of town. We have friends that live in a nice little neighborhood off I15 and Cactus just west of the 15. You'd probably never look there without someone telling you it's totally fine. IDK how I would navigate without some local friends helping, so I'd lean into the community pretty hard for where their friends live and just start driving the communities.

For awhile (in 2016 or so) I shared a 2bd 2ba condo with a friend, in the Flamingo Palms complex (very near the Rio) .

It was less than a mile away from Bellagio and I often walked there when the weather was nice.
I also regularly walked the mile or so the other way to go to the supermarket. Occasionally I even walked to the Orleans which was only a little farther away. Also was very close to the Rio, Gold Coast and the Palms, where I sometimes went to the movie theater.

I thought the neighborhood was fine and I never felt unsafe or had any problems there. We also got a great deal on rent, I believe it was only $800 total. Would have stayed longer but the owner apparently wasn't paying his bills and the unit got foreclosed.

Will the big poker rooms be a lot busier this Super Bowl weekend? I usually avoid playing life because it's the same regulars every time I go.

No. You get chances in Monopoly. Life is a totally different game.

Been to a half dozen or so SB weekends all pre-pandemic. Poker rooms were packed with long wait lists. Assuming it will be the same especially since they are hosting.

*EDIT* I meant to say "LIVE" obviously

How far would you recommend living from the strip if you play regularly?

I bought in the Centennial area several years back and it's super quiet out here besides the random murder-suicide shooting that happened in the Oso Blanco area about two months ago.

I think a 20-30 minute commute is fair coming from 95-S.

Wife wants to live near Chinatown, but I don't know about that area...

What are some must see/do things in Vegas for a first timer (besides hookers and blow)?

Or some great promotions/offers I should take advantage of.

Plan on getting Caesars and MGM cards for that sweet $2/hr in poker comps. What else is there?

Don't get too excited about the comps. All the food is overpriced, and the MGM points are very limited in where they can be used.

Can I use comps to pay for 100% of a meal? Or how does that work?

Yes, but they can't be combined between venues and they're a pain in the butt.

If playing at Bellagio, you have to ask someone to print a comp sheet and then take it to one of the few restaurants that accept them. There are many others at the casino where they can't be used. Same deal at Aria, but they can't be combined between different MGM rooms.

When it comes to slots I am clueless and a novice. Is there any rule of thumb for the optimal way (low variance, I assume, is best) to convert my slotplay at MGM properties into cash? I had a credit card offer that netted me $2000 slotplay, and I would like to max this out, even if it means 1 line at $1. I understand that this is not necessarily $2000 in cash, but what range should I expect to get from playing this through (1x) in the lowest variance way?

(Praying for something more than about tree fiddy)

Do I look for the payout percentage and then just mindlessly slam the lowest denomination, the fewest lines? Could be a job for wife if so.

Thanks for any sage advice!

DDB $1 video poker is your safest bet. Could go for TDB which is more volatile but higher payout, so depends on what you want to achieve. Expect around 50-60% unless you hit a jackpot.

Whenever I get slot plays I play 8/6 or 9/6 Jack's or better video poker. Usually get 90% back.
