Seems like a really dumb way to run your ride share business, especially when you need rides cause you're getting pennies.
I like how all your complaints involve a mistake YOU made. Sounds like a great way to go through life.

While the driver should not have screamed at you, you were the primary one at fault here and seem to be unwilling to accept any responsibility for that.

Try to keep in mind that Uber drivers in Las Vegas are getting paid $0.675/mile* to cart your ass around. Expecting them to have and demonstrate competence and politeness (and whatever else you've found something to moan and groan about) is a really strange take.

*assuming that they don't have to move an inch between rides and have magical cars that don't cost anything to own/maintain/insure.

I disagree with anyone saying cabs in Vegas are in anyway decent...

The amount of times my foreign cabby has got lost taking me somewhere off strip probably outweighs the amount of times they know where they are going...

They dont really have Uber in Dublin, Ireland but ill definitely try it out next time im in the States

The #1 advantage of uber in LV is the price getting set in advance far outweighs all of the bad route nonsense you get from cabbies

Right. Not to mention that taxi drivers have a financial incentive to go a longer way (e.g., tunneling) or even just a slower way to increase the fare. How is this a good system for the customer?

Plus at the end of the ride you have to give more money than is shown on the meter. You don't tip bus drivers or airline pilots to get you from point A to point B. Not to derail with a tipping argument, but even WITH tips, I would rather know the fare ahead of time and then make my decision about whether I want to use a taxi vs. monorail/bus/walking/renting a car.

There is that potentially, but it's more likely that the guy just got suckered into Uber or Lyft's own program for renting cars to their drivers. They're selling or renting as much or more product to their drivers as they are to the riders- cars, insurance, the phone they require you to use to access the service, etc. Now, the commercials they run in LA are targeted toward getting more drivers than it is riders. It's clear where they see a good chunk of their revenue comes from- drivers who have no financial sense.

Agreed. I keep checking the thread for stories about the drunks, freaks, and nymphos. All we get is a bunch of nits bickering over pennies. Shame!

I am not debating the merits of having a tip free environment; rather, trying to explain how difficult it is to implement and sustain. If you are a steadfast rule follower who sees things in black and white, I can see why it would annoy you that the driver may be hopeful for a tip when it is supposed to be tip free. However, if you're a pragmatic individual, I think you would understand why drivers would like tips to supplement the low income they receive from driving for uber/lyft. I know some people who have driven for uber, and they have echoed what other former drivers in this thread said about the income being low. Sure, they could go get another job. Jobs don't grow on trees; the world is not black and white.
I don't think the tip free restaurant lost their best wait staff due to lack of incentive to provide good service but rather due to the fact they can make more money at a tipping restaurant. The ones left over working for less money in their pocket at the end of the day are more likely to have lower self esteems less personable etc and thus are not providing good service.

The other way to look at it is with higher pay you attract a higher class of people. If you lower the pay, you lose a lot of those hard workers as it is not worth working those jobs anymore. Same thing happened with Uber/Lyft. Look at the drivers you had back in 2013/14 (if you were in one of the cities that had them back then) compared to the drivers today. It's like night and day.

I never had any bad experiences with Uber but ran into a lot of asskissers sob stories and various forms of indirect tip solicitation.

Some findinds from an NPR survey of Uber and Lyft drivers:

- Lyft drivers are happier than Uber drivers, and make more money

- Driver wages have been declining

- Driver demos are much older than that of the passengers

Is there a reason people use Uber rather than Lyft? Everything I've heard from both the media and drivers in person suggests that Lyft is much better for them. So I only take
Lyft in Vegas.

I have taken Uber several times when I've been in places where Lyft wasn't available, and found the experience almost exactly equivalent. So I'm not sure why I would ever choose them over Lyft when I have the choice.

Uber has a stronger brand. The word Uber is synonymous with ride sharing in the same way that kleenex is what people call facial tissues. I have the Lyft App on my phone but have never even bothered to open it. I will sometime, but only because I've been influenced by this thread.

I had a Lyft driver the other day pick me up in a 2016 BMW 750i. I was so confused because I didn't think that I opted for select. He was a young Armenian kid. He said he was 22 but I think he was full of it and was probably near 30. He said that he only does it busy nights to meet and hookup with girls going to/coming from the club. I could actually see that happening. I asked him what he did for work and he laughed and said he never had a real job in his life. He "Has Millions" from his "family business" and his parents are "paying for him to go to medical school". Then it got weird when we got closer to where my car was parked and he was giving me the sob story about how he loses $5-10 for every ride he does by driving this car and how he usually makes that up from cool people cause "everybody tips cause it's Vegas". Then he wanted me to follow him on Snapchat and let me know that if there was "anything that I need or want, he can get that in 15 minutes ".

These guys man. I forgot his Snapchat, btw.

Saying you have millions would seem counterproductive to getting a tip.

...but, did you tip him?

Because it was Lyft and I was going to tip regardless, I tipped him $2. I normally start off with $5 in mind for a rideshare ride and -$1 for every annoyance or screw up on the drivers part.

I have been using Lyft a lot more lately since I've been playing a lot more at night. I had a promotion where I got $5 off of my next ten rides so I ran through that already this month. It's so much easier for getting to/from strip casino properties. It's also great for ducking the new parking fees.

With all of the rate cuts, the quality of the drivers have definitely gone down. It went from a good mix of locals, to pretty much only retiree aged, ESL locals who do not know their way around town that well. The service is cheap enough however that this shouldn't be an issue. Any issue I've had with my drivers have been minor. Mostly, it's seeing that they're 3 minutes away from you in a very easy to find place (off strip) and it still takes them 10-15 minutes to get to you.
