get a good grip on the basics as far as sticking to good hands and in position and that will go a lonnng way in preventing anyone from 'outplaying' you...also dont inflate pots with bets that dont make sense...use pot control unless you really have a strong made hand and you believe you need to either deny their draw or get them to put more $ in with worse than you hand. the biggest mistake is new players thinking "hey! I have an ace and hit an ace on flop...the texture and my kicker are irrelevant I'm supposed to bet here!" when the truth is if someone calls they are likely beat or will not have the experience to know how to proceed with changes the turn and river bring.

Sound advice Whey. Bet sizing and position are highly important. But the most important part is to have fun and try and get comfortable.

I dont like talking numbers too often but guess I can tell you i was at about $27/hr before it broke, since buying new ipad at the beginning of this month Im running at $24.17 over 84 hours...started off the month strong but been experiencing a pretty typical though still unpleasant downswing this last week. so thats about $2030 from llsnl in Nov then the $1000 or so I profited from HPT though I dont really incorporate mtt results with my cash stats. I would hope to get in another 30 hours before the month ends and in all likelyhood that hourly will tick up a bit but who knows.

speaking in generalities a decent llsnl player can make 12-15$/hr at 1-2/1-3, the best are at about 23-25$, I'm sitting at about 27$ over a pretty massive sample size but have been doing this far too long and do a lot of table selection and playing deeper stacked games when possible. It doesn't sound too horrible if you assume 40 hour weeks/160 hour months BUT I assure you that sort of volume proves much easier said than done. Some of the benefits of playing in regards to freedom present some of the biggest challenges in being consistent and productive. I really need to be transitioning more into 2-5$ (what I'm supposed to be doing but I'm being too sticky) and need to be $2-5 exclusively by after this coming summer.
This will be perfect timing for me to swoop in on your old 1-2/1-3 games to get my live grind going!

Haha jk, hoping to be playing a good mix of live and online along with the usual soul withering MTT grindage for all the good series in town.

...countdown continues...

I've seen many friends who know (enough) about poker to win, but they will never be "winners" in the game, because they don't have the money management and mental management skills it takes to play exclusively. I always enjoy this thread and the honest and open way that Whey conveys himself, his approach to the game, and the overall big picture of life and poker balance. True grinder not just at heart, but whole mind, body, and soul, he is. (Or is he, if you often read posts in Yoda voice.)

Keep up the work, good!

Ok thanks for sharing. I admire your professionalism when it comes to bank roll management and your overall approach to the game. I'm going to Vegas in a few weeks I can't wait. Played live poker maybe 10 times so I really enjoy it when I can play it. Any tips for a live fish like me are much appreciated Anyways great thread keep it up.
re-read this and maybe interpreted wrong, if your looking for advice specific to live low stakes games best thing I can say is there are very few players who are going to play meta at all...so if it looks like they got it...they usually got it, and so few low stakes players (virtually none) attempt to balance or exploit three bet ranges or anything so if the average player (not the maniac who three and four bets anything) three or four bets you your looking at a super premium hand...fold if your out of position and/or your hand plays poorly in that situation (AJ QJ ect) BUT if you not terribly priced out, and especially if your in position, you might want to take off a flop with something like 7-8s if your both deep enough, just know you need to make a big hand but will get paid b/c these same players cannot get off premium hands (big pairs or AQ/AK that connect) post flop in almost any situation

Venetian last night, 4 hours@ 1-2 for +$176 and some drunken noodles

I really like playing at the Venetian and always feel very comfortable and motivated there so will likely put a lot of sessions in there going into December. I have traditionally put in very low volume in December in part because the weather depresses me, I'll try to crack that a bit this year.

I have been following this thread for quite some time, quietly lurking. But when you complain about Vegas weather in December I die a little inside.

It is currently -25 with the windchill here.

No more complaining!

Oh yes, the Florida thing. Funny, my aunt moved here from Ft. Lauderdale and didn't last one winter. She was shocked how cold it got (I loled) and promptly moved back to FL in less than 6 months.

Ya I wanted to make a weather comment too ... Haha. Phoenix and Vegas are two of the best weather cities when the winter rolls around! (Excluding San Diego and Ya ok, some of Florida too)

Then again, I grew up in the cold snow of New Hampshire, and I now spend my summers in 110+ degrees between Phx and Vegas, so that may tip my opinion a bit as well.

Hope everyone has a good Turkey Day.

heading out to Wyman's place for an invite to do food+booze over there with he and his lady friend. +$89 at GVR last night short 1.5 hours. Probably no poker tonight just gonna relax. I have been working on a lot of poker theory and strategy really trying to up my game away from the tables and also focusing on some other variations and formats...'cross training' if you will...not to be confused with cross dressing which I only do on special occasions. I'll try to scrap together an update together on Mon but will probably among the more boring ones as it's been a rather boring week or so aside from some introspective things that don't translate to much fun in an update.

Thx again to Wyman and his wife for the TG invite. Food was excellent, they have some serious cooking chops The wine and conversation were equally pleasant and it was amusing to discover how many parallels we actually shared in regards to a variety of topics/experiences.

typed up an update but didn't finish, will post tomorrow, did a max day in gym and overdid it, kinda bottomed out my low blood pressure so felt pretty crappy afterwards. funny cross-fitty couple in matching red/black gym outfits...never seen such bad form on so many things consecutively...scrawny dude's back looked like a complete 'U' doing bent rows, might as well have someone beat him in the spine with a board. chick was doable though. guy caught me staring unabashedly mouth open at his utterly deplorable form and I just kept looking
